10K - 2 Weeks and Counting

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Last Monday I jogged 6.2 miles and felt good.  Yesterday I jogged 6.2 miles and it kicked my @ss.  I am still sore.  I think it is from lifting legs on Friday.  I will only do a light light leg workout this week and no leg workout next week - the week of the race.

To get ready for the race, I plan to run 6-7 miles Thursday, Sunday, and 1 day the following week. Two days before the race, I will rest.  I feel good about this race and see how some get addicted to running. Although it doesn’t even come close to body building.  I can’t wait to check off 10K on my list of ‘Things I Want to Complete’ and get back to lifting.

Training for 10K

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

My training is going well for this 10K.  I ran (jogged) 6 miles today.  I am a little sore after, but not terribly.  My goal was to run 5.5  miles today, but I felt good and went for 6.  My schedule for the rest of the week is as follows:

Tue - lift (upper - high reps) - morning cardio (walk on treadmill 30 minutes)
Wed - interval (HIIT) 2.5 miles
Thur - lift (lower - high reps) - morning cardio (walk on treadmill 30 minutes)
Fri - rest
Sat - 6.2 miles (different course)
Sun - rest

I would ultimately like to get my time down to 10 min miles.  Today I jogged 11 min miles (with a bunch of hills).  Yes that is SLOW - but my goal is to complete a 10K.  6 months ago I would not have thought I could.  So this is really a motivational run for me.  If I can do this, puts me in the direction of believing I can compete next summer.  Where if you asked me right now about competing in a natural BB competition, I’d say no way.

One thing I will note is I could not have gotten this far without the motivation from this site.  Thanks to you all :) .

30 Days Until 10K Race

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

I have 30 days to train for this 10K.  This is going to be hard, because I love lifting weights and now I have to focus more on conditioning.  Basically, I need to flip my whole workout routine.  Well sort of…  Today I went to the gym and did 30 minutes on tread mill and 20 minutes on the elliptical.  My target for the race is 10 minute miles for the 6.2 mile race.  Not spectacular by any stretch, but my goal is to finish and 10 minute miles aren’t bad for a non-runner.

I will need to get my cardio workouts up to 70 minutes.  With 4 weeks my goals are such:
week 1 - 40 minutes running
week 2 - 50 minutes running
week 3 - 60 minutes running
week 4 - 70 minutes running

I can do cardio all day, but running without stopping is something totally different.  My strategy is such, like today I did 30 run / 20 ellipt.  In two days I will do, 35 / 15.  The 5th day I will do 40 / 10.  By the end of the week I should be able to do 40 minutes on 6 mph on the tread mill.  The next week I will do 40 / 20, etc. etc.  I also plan to do some HIT (i.e. Ten 100m sprints - 2.5 miles when you consider you have to jog back to the starting line for the next one).  I should loose a lot of fat.  Unfortunately, I am going to loose some muscle too.  Well 1 month of training shouldn’t hurt me too bad.

Oh No! Another Not So Good Week :(

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

Using what you got when no gym is around :)

Well, I must say this is two weeks in a row.  I had to go over to Germany for 1 week for work (Karlsruhe to be specific, 70 miles outside of Frankfurt) and I have not worked out much and have been eating bad.  I am going to be afraid to get on that scale when I get back in the states.  Last night I did do, 100 push ups, 100 sit ups, 5 sets of jumping jacks, and 5 sets of curls (using my suit case - sometimes you have to be creative).  The hotel I am staying at does not have a gym and I’m not paying $10 Euros a day to go to a gym.  Also, German food is high in fat and carbs.  The beer is out of this world, but high in calories as well.  I am going to try and make myself get up tomorrow morning and run.  Unfortunately, I am in down town and there is a lot of traffic around.

Well, I will definitely make up for these two weeks.  And just when I felt like I was starting to see some results.  Gotta hang in there…
