Supplements!!

March 25, 2009

In 20 years of lifting I have been through some supplements. I have found some that work and some that are just a huge waste of money.

When the gov’t outlawed andro it really killed the supplement business. Before, when you bought a supplement that had andro in the name you could pretty much bank on the fact you were going to make gains. Not necessarily freaky, mind blowing gains but a guarenteed 10 pounds of serious muscle in a couple of months.

Along with that you definately had to change it up and branch out with different supplements. Once your body got used to what you were using you would stall. You had to shock your system and restart with a different type.

In the supplement world of today you have to shop around to find the right one for you. You will still need to change it up after a while to see the gains you want.

When you look through these muscle mag’s and see the huge pro’s promoting different products it doesn’t mean that they take it and got huge from it. They are promoting that product and getting a hefty sum of money for doing it.

Read the labels and ingredients! Figure out what is best for you and experiment. It will take some time to get the right combination but when you do you will know.

Good Partners

March 24, 2009

Anyone that works out knows that having a partner is definately a plus!

You can’t just choose any partner either, it has to be someone that i fairly equal in strength as well as stamina and size. Lets face it, if you choose someone that does not workout on your level, you will forever be changing weight and that will wear you out more than the actual workout will.

I recently started working out with a buddy of mine. We are almost equal in size but strength is different on some exercises. I am stronger with chest but he is stronger with squats and deadlifts. All other assistance work we are equal.

When we squat or deadlift he pushes me hard to the point of throwing up sometimes and I do the same for him with bench.

If you are serious and want to put on freaky size don’t feel bad when you tell your girlfriend that you would rather workout with the guy that is your size and strength. She will understand….. you hope!

Breaking old habits!!!

March 23, 2009

I have been training for over 20 years and for the most part it was the same old routine. Go to the gym and do cardio for a warm-up, hit my one body part and then do arms, abs, and calves. 7 days a week at least 350 days a year.

The size would come and go and I would have hi’s and low’s as all of us do when we are trying to build mass. I am 40 years old. For the last 2 months I have been performing a new routine. 3 days of training a week with numerous sets, low reps, and heavy weight. In the past 2 months I have gained 10 pounds of muscle and my strength has gone through the roof.

The routine has been used for many years by power lifters. It uses 3 basic movements but also incorporates assistance training as well. For instance, Monday and Friday are squat and bench. 6 sets of 3 or 4 reps for each exercise with 3/4 of your one rep max. Wednesday is deadlift with the same formula for lifts. After each core exercise you perform assistance work with arms, shoulders, calves, and traps.

This type of routine is definately not for everyone but if you are looking to pack on good mass before cutting for a show. you may want to think about using this routine. In 2 months i went from 276 to 286 with a considerable jump in strength and overall size.
