Gloves? What’s your take?

So, here’s a few articles on the topic of weight lifting gloves:

protect your hands!
weight lifting gloves & equipment

I know several people, even heavy lifters who do not wear gloves (both men and women). Most of the reasons I have been given related to these individuals’ liking the accession of the callouses on their hands (the toughening or roughening of the area) and/or they felt they had a direct grip on the weight/bar.

Do you wear gloves? If not, what’s your reasoning? When I first started lifting in my mid-teens, I wore them. Currently, I do not wear lifting gloves, but I am starting to lift heavier, making pretty quick gains (granted, I am not curling 60s or anything!!). For any women who might read this who might wear gloves, do you wear them to protect your hands against callouses that you consider to be unsightly/unattractive? I suppose the very same could be applied to men, but may be less of an issue (?) …I shouldn’t assume. If it’s a matter of aiding in your grip, hence you wear gloves for their apparent functional purpose, what is your favorite brand? I always wore ‘Harbinger’ as they fit me best and I found them to be most comfortable. It probably depends on personal preference, but some must be better than others–
Thoughts?

*p.s.  this wasn’t intended as an eye-opening blog or something profound. I am just curious about the population here. Thanks :) *

cjacks9: That’s exactly the response I got from many men I have spoken to. Personally, I couldn’t deal or rather, wouldn’t ever let myself get to the point where I had such thick callouses that I was "like a man." I don’t intend for this to get into a "PC" war for some, but I am right there with ya [in the thought process] as a woman who wants to be strong, yet keep her nice soft hands :)

No gloves here… I have pretty thick calices on my hands. I never really thought of or cared for lifting gloves. Tough hands mean tough man!…. :)

I agree with the Ninga, but I think women need gloves. I would hate for my wife to touch me with hands like my own.

I dont use gloves. They make my hands sensitive when I dont wear them. I like my callouses. They show that I work hard and consistantly.

My hands are small so the padding in the glove takes up too much of my gripping space. I want my hands to stay relatively soft so im looking into thinner gloves. Havnt tested any out yet. That is my take.

I have the same callouses that I got from doing the monkey bars in elementary school. I my hands are not any "rougher" than they were before I started lifting.

I think it is just a personal choice.

I just started to use gloves. Only been working out for 2 months but I was already getting the callosues. I have small hands and tried on a couple of different brands at our sporting goods store. I decided on Go Fit brand for women.

I just found my gloves recently! i guess it is a good thing since I have started lifting heavy. I really need them or my hands do get rough. I might try to wear them most workouts, instead of just for those exercises which are tough on them:)
