"To be better than yesterday. To be known as an ELITE trainer in the physique/figure community. And(maybe/PROBABLY) do a couple of shows in late 2010-2011. It's been a while since I've competed but I'm feeling like Stella lately(??? Ask somebody!)"

R-El’s BODY SHOP

April 21, 2009

Men, Women, Bodybuilding, Figure

Com’on in and pick up a lagging(or missing) body part or retrofit your entire physique
As I stated on my profile, I’m grinding to be known as an ELITE trainer in more than just my local area. If any advice I give you helps you get to where you want to be, all I ask is that you do the same. Let’em know ‘bout me and pass me along to the next person(peace)

Question- What’s the BEST bodybuilding program?

Answer- The best bodybuilding program is then one that gives you the RESULTS YOU WANT.

Everybody knows that!

But did you know that to develop the inner head of your biceps, the widely used seated incline dumbbell curls may not work for you if you have long forearms and that the straight bar barbell DRAG curl might be a much better alternative for you?

Or are you a bodybuilder with wide clavicles and are having trouble bringing up your chest and back because of the push/pull leverage? Remember IFBB pro Paul Dillet with his mile W-I-D-E shoulders yet VERY poor chest and back development? Do you want to know the very simple tweaks you can make to your training to bypass your overpowering shoulders and improve your torso thickness?

And what’s the best calf exercise if you have high calves/long Achilles and WHY?

How’s your lat spread? Are you unable to get it to fan out even though you’ve trained a ton of muscle onto your back? The problem could actually be how you train your chest(WHAT?) And what about your front double bi being all bunched up instead of high and open? Check list. Bi’s- peaked and full. Triceps- thick like ham hocks. Chest- MASSIVE! Middle back(lower traps and rhomboids) sorely lacking. HMmmm! Maybe the reason you cant open big on your poses has less to do with the muscles you have and more to do with the ones you don’t.

Regardless of how good your physique is now, we all have things about ours that we want to improve. Everybody wants to be better. That’s why we’re all here. That’s why I opened the BODY SHOP. This is not Chemical Corner where you come to get bigger or ripped but with the exact same holes in your physique that you had 10, 20 or even 50 lbs ago. We can go there too (one-on-one) But for now, this aint that kind of party. This is the place to come to make sure that when you have dieted down and step on that stage that you have all your body parts with you. That is not the time to discover that you don’t have the upper chest, rear delts, hammies or thigh sweep that you thought you did when you were “bulking” up. And even if you have no desire to compete, you still want to look the part, right? Com’on into the BODY SHOP!

Where my ladies at? If you’re a hardcore female bodybuilder, you already know that all the same rules that apply to the fellas also apply to you. So come get some too. But if you’re a figure competitor or hopeful, DON’T GET IT TWISTED! Freak what you heard about using plyo’s and “athletic” style training(unless you’re doing fitness) to get a winning physique. The only real difference between you and the hardcore women is CHEMICAL(and the gap is closing even in that respect) Point is you need to bust ass with hardcore training just like your big sisters. Just shift the intensity to maintenance once you get the amount of muscle you want. It aint like you’re gonna start training on a Monday and then two Thursdays from now be “too big.” Still you want to make sure that your physique has that 3-D effect of NO MISSING BODY PARTS as well. So if you need a glute/ham tie-in replacement or some delts or just want to know my trick for getting rid of scarecrow arms and robot hands when you’re standing on stage, Com’on into the BODY SHOP!

It’s what I do! I don’t just look at the muscle you have, or even the muscle you DON’T have. I also take into consideration your limb and torso length, to determine what exercises and angles will work best for YOU. Additionally, I look at your structural alignment to see if that stubborn body part might be a product of blocked blood flow or nerve firing from an impingement. No matter the reason, if you’re missing a body part, or two or FIVE, Com’on into the BODY SHOP! I’ll see if I have it in the back(peace)

Mind Body and Goals

April 7, 2009

Now before I start this flow, I want to make emphatically clear that I am NOT some kum-ba-yah, “We are the world” rah-rah who believes that there is some big “secret” that separates the successful from those who are not. I Do believe that what does separate the two is the access, cultivation and use of the tools needed to achieve success. Neither do I believe in “willpower.”  Willpower is like dieting. It cannot be continued forever and is only as good as the length of time you use it. Instead, I believe that one must develop strategies that take into account their (relative) LACK of willpower as the default and from there PRACTICE these strategies continuously to develop the aforementioned better access, cultivation and use of the tools to achieve their goal.

This is the purpose of this proposed series of post, based on the book I’ve written(currently in edit) Mind, Body and Goals- Emotional Fitness. “Proposed” because I will continue to post it only IF there is interest within this community and will do so for as long as interest remains. During that time I welcome and encourage feedback, opinion, anecdotes and debate. I present this offering in the spirit of BB.com in that we are all bigger, stronger, leaner, sexier, better whatever-er because this community exists, than we are alone(peace)

Next- “Wants Needs and Goals”

Getting Community Getting Better

March 30, 2009

Virtually everyone here(including myself) is here to get better. Even if the definition of “better” means something completely different to every single one of us, it’s still the one thing that is exactly the same for all of us. All of the, “…build muscle…”, “…get leaner…”, “…take my physique to the next level…”, “Compete.”, rings familiar enough in enough other hearts and minds here that many of us feel we have(and some actually have) cultivated community here. We can get everything here from invaluable information and well meaning advice to encouragement and even sympathy. But what we ALL seem to get here is HOPE that the answer(s) to what separates where we are from where we want to be lies somewhere in the articles, forums and even the rants.

My own personal “get better” as I state in my profile is two-fold. First I’m currently training to compete again after being away from it for awhile. Fortunately I continued to workout during my hiatus and also coming from a life long athletic background as well as martial arts since I could walk, my body likes to respond to whatever the stimulus. My challenge has not been the transition from “working out” to TRAINING(if you don’t know the difference then you aint TRAINING) as I feel that during my time away from it I’ve actually been holding back from where my body and my heart really wanted to be. The bump in the road that brought me here can be summed up in a(very butchered) line from, I think it was “Rocky XXXL 2.0” or there ‘bouts. Where his manager, Mickey explains to Rocky that the reason he lost the fight or whatever it was that he wasn’t doing the way he was supposed to, was that, “You let the worst thing that could happen to a fighter happen to you. You went and got CIVILIZED!” So with that they left his posh surroundings and went back to the old dank gym where they started. EYE OF THE TIGER! Yeah! THAT’s what it was(that was my thought bubble happening just then). Anyway, going “home” was what he needed to do to get his fire back. That’s what I’m doing of sorts. I have built a GREAT personal training business here in the San Francisco East Bay Area. I have a great clientele. I also work with a network of orthopedic specialists, physical therapist, chiropractors and massage therapist in a referral/out patient capacity. So my business pretty much stays recession-proof. Somebody ALWAYS needs “fixing.” But this same BLESSING that provides for my life has also put me in a world where I’m always the ‘inspiration”, the lead horse, the dog with the BIG…You get the idea ;) So to get back my own LION eye(sorry tiger but I’m a Leo) I had to find a place where everyone, no matter how different, was the same as me. I had to find a community where everybody wants to get better. Plus I’m too spoiled with my nice clean gym to go back to an old musty dungeon(are there even any left?)

The other reason I’m here, also in my profile, is I’ve been told and quite frankly, I believe that I’m a pretty damn good trainer. No. I’m sorry a VERY damn good trainer. Not just in the way that I can help average Joe’s and Jane’s reach there goals. Or how I’m able to assess someone’s walk and posture and give them the one or five exercises that will eliminate their nagging ankle or knee or low back or whatever. But also how I can look at your physique, listen to your goals and map out what to do to get you there(or at very least within your genetic potential of course). And not just “what” to do but I can break down how YOU should do it as oppsed to another way and WHY. Now before you think that I’m feeling myself just a little too much with all this, I owe everything/anything that I am to God’s blessings to me. What else if not a blessing to be (very)good at something you love AND be able to make a living form it. Also to the VERY BEST coach/trainer/teacher I and many collegiate, Olympic and professional athletes ever had and my best friend for life, my father, William Archie Owens. Oh yeah, I did some stuff on my own to get there too. So this is also an opportunity for me to put myself on a virtual world stage to truly show and see where I stand. To teach, to learn, to help others in my COMMUNITY to get better. And to GET BETTER(peace)

Bodybuilding-to-English Dictionary

March 24, 2009

From my upcoming Bodybuilding-to-English Dictionary. All in good fun. Hope you enjoy it.

“You’re just holding a little water.” (translation- You’re fat!)

“I’m just holding a little water.” (translation- I hope he/she/they cant tell that actually I’m fat.)

“He’s has a very symmetrical physique.” (translation- He’s small.)

“I cant believe he didn’t win! He was the freakiest thing on stage!” (transaltion- So what if none of his body parts go together.)

(Bonus translation- COM’ON! It’s called bodyBUILDING!)

“He’s a fantastic poser.” (translation- So what if he doesn’t even know how to do a proper front double-bi. He (pick one, any or all)

-does the splits…

-does a back flip…

-pop-locks in his posing routine.

(Bonus translation- is Kai Greene (OHHhhhh!)*

*Love you Bro for the fresh blood you bring(peace)

“I’m using this show as a warm-up.” (While this one is often legit it can also mean- I know I’m not ready but I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanna compete. Besides I already paid for my NPC card.)

“Here’s the new criteria to replace the old criteria that we just made.” (This can mean any one of the following and almost always for women’s shows.

-Even though she has the most muscle she wont sell magazine covers, so…

-I know she doesn’t look like she’s trained a day in her entire life. But look at her chest. She’ll sell A LOT of magazine covers, so…

-Wait… Is this figure?.. It must be figure ’cause nobody’s doing somersaults. No wait. Maybe it’s bikini…? Oh I wish Rachel and Corey would come back and make all of this just go away.

(Bonus translation- We have absolutely NO idea WHAT we’re looking for.)

“I feel I bring the best combination of pure muscle and femininity.” (translation- I’m big and ripped enough to win the mens middle weights. But I came in with the best weave, my nails are perfect and check out these puppies. $3,000. EACH!

And the number one Bodybuilding-to-English euphemism(drum roll please)

“I’m off-season right now.”

That’s right. You got this one. Just wait for it. Wwwait-forrrrr-it…

(translation- I’M FAT.)

Ta-dahhhhhhhhhhh!
