Hey Everyone!
As many of you might know already, this year was the first year for the Stingrey Classic in Hawaii. There was definitely a lot of hype about the contest circulating around the gym, with posters everywhere I could see… but as with any event nowadays you never know if there is going to be a good turnout (competitor-wise) or not. I knew that this might be my last chance to check out a show before I compete myself, so without a doubt I purchased tickets for me and my friends so that I could learn as much as possible.
At prejudging I was a little disappointed. I do realize it was the first year running the Stingrey, but being that I am competing as a bantamweight I had my eye out for other bantams and lighty’s. For the men’s novice division they only had 1 bantam, 2 lightweights, and for the open class 0 bantams and 2 lightweights. However, something that was impressive was the large number of womens figure athletes, but only one fitness competitor… Christine Nguyen. She was my old college classmate I haven’t seen in years. Wow, I didn’t even recognize her! SHE WAS AMAZING!
I wasn’t sure what to expect for the night show…but I can say that I was REALLY impressed by the overall production. Everything flowed seamlessly from one event to the next and we had lots of extras like lion dancing, awesome guest posing, and even the MC’ing (Shawn Ray and Bob Cicherillo) made the whole night entertaining. Another awesome concept was the dynamic video taping, where each competitor was blown up onto two huge projectors… I’m sure everyone in the ballroom didn’t miss a thing being that the cameras got real up close (maybe a little too close haha) on each individual.
At the closing ceremony Rey Ronquillo eluded that this year is merely paving the way for many Stingrey Classics to come and hopefully next year there will be more faces on stage.

Hello to everyone! I had my first competition on the 23rd of March, The 2007 Stingrey Classic, Rey Ronquilio’s inaugural show. Rey’s show was filled with an incredible amount of energy and excitement. There were dragons, skits, fashion shows, and even a little bit of comedy throughout the night. The guest posers, Nicole Duncan and Phil Heath looked amazing.
Shawn Ray and Bob Cicherillo made sure to keep the audiences’ eyes on stage throughout the show. Roc Shabazz’s skit with Pebblz‘ son was done so well! That’s what I would like to talk about more. The skit performed during the show had a wonderful moral. If you work really hard at what you want out of life, you’ll eventfully achieve all of your goals.
That’s how I felt about the Sting Rey Classic, it was my first time stepping out onto the stage. All that’s going through my mind is, “I hope my bikini bite is going to stay,” “I hope my hair piece doesn’t fall out,” and “I hope I don’t bust my butt in these shoes.” The girls in the show were great! All the girls were incredibly friendly and willing to lend a helping hand.
It was great meeting island favorites like Maxiene and Irene! Before attending the competition, I set some personal goals for myself. I made sure to keep in mind, keep your goals realistic! I wanted to be at a certain weight, and I wanted to hold a certain body fat percentage. I had another goal which was to place top three.
Meeting those goals alone made me feel like a winner. That’s whats most important. Be happy with your accomplishments and have a winning attitude. I couldn’t be more happy to place third (Short class division), for my first show. So, I think this is a sport I might stick with for a while and see where it takes me. Danny, much congratulations to you for the short division! You look awesome! I hope the industry takes you far!
Keep that winning attitude and stay positive!

This is my third contest prep. I am feeling like I have come a long way since my first contest (July 2006).
This time around, I am really paying more attention to my body signals rather that my "scheduled workout". If I feel good, I push really hard, on the other hand, I am making sure I get tons of GOOD sleep and recover 100%. For me, I think this is going to be the key for my individual improvement.
I have more balance to my physique and I am really happy with how I am leaning out for the competition on March 23rd (in Oahu). I will update my photos after the show and maybe I can get some feedback from all the athletes that happen to come across me.
Aloha
