Pro/Am Contests Blog

The bodybuilding world is full of such great people.  I was honored to meet a few at the Colorado Pro/Am this year.

I was most excited about meeting Jamie Eason, since she really inspired me to start training for competition.  I figured she would be there, since she works for bodybuilding.com and would most likely be at their booth.  I never expected that she would be the first person I met when I got there, and in the bathroom nonetheless! (full story in my bodyblog)  Jamie was so sweet to chat with my fiance and me for a while downstairs after the pics, then to chat on the escalator up to the expo and even a bit a the booth.  She is such a gem, and to see that she was so sweet and down to earth for being such a celebrity made her that much cooler in my book.

At the expo I also had the honor of meeting Christine Pomponio-Pate.  Again with the sweetness!  She autographed a pic for my fiance and me, as well as for one of our coworkers who has a little bit of a “thing” for her.  We kidded a bit about what she should write to him, and she was really cool about it.  After a nice autograph (we couldn’t be too mean to the poor guy) she was more than happy to take a pic.

We had tickets for the finals on Saturday night, and we were mainly there for the figure girls, but I was pleasantly surprised by the women builders.  It was really cool to watch the ladies have so much fun with the final posedown.  I even sat next to the husband of Kelly “Jackie” Jackson (if you were there, then you’d understand…the MC’s paperwork was a bit off…..) who was one of the amateur figure competitors (and she won 3rd place).  It was fun to cheer for someone, and to experience the camaraderie of this world.

I don’t think there is any other sport where so many of the athletes are as down to earth as in body building.  There are some wonderfully humble NHL players, whom I respect very much, but there’s something about all the hard work and discipline that goes into body building contest preparations that no other sport has, and that anyone in the sport understands.  Everyone is very cool and I am really happy that I had such a wonderful experience!

A big shout out to Sara Hurrle who stepped on stage for the first time at the Colorado Pro/Am Classic. We caught up with Sara four weeks out as she was going through a killer leg routine at Greenwood Athletic Club in Denver, Colorado. If you missed the preview earlier, check out the Colorado Connection Part II. Sara won the Figure C Class and went on to win the overall title. This was a tough contest and to win it all your first time out is awesome.

I had a chance to do a photo shoot with Sara a couple days after the show and she looked amazing. Look for big things in her future as she hits the national stage and will be one to watch in the coming months. Check out more shots from our photoshoot on my bodyspace page.
