2009 CBBF Canadian Bodybuilding Championships
By: Mike Yurkovic
Beautiful Vancouver, BC played host to the 2009 CBBF Canadian Bodybuilding Championships August 22, 2009. It was the first time since 1986 that the show had been held on the West Coast of Canada.
A field of over 160 athletes representing their respective provinces displayed the best in amateur Canadian muscle.
On the ladies side the Jr. Women was won by Ying Tan with the lightweight going to Natalie Czerwinsk. Middleweight went to Maria Mikola and a very srtong heavyweight class went to Lyris Cappelle from Saskatchewan who also took the overall and won her IFBB Pro card. Lyris displayed a very sleek, well balanced physique with an amazing level of conditioning.
The Masters ladies class was won by Ontario’s Melody Spetko with Laura Ginter taking the Grand Masters class.
The mens side of the show featured twelve weight classes which is a few more than you would see at an American NPC show.
I have to give special “props” to Grand Master winner Steven Burns from Saskatchewan . This 50-plus gentleman displayed a level of conditioning that was truly remarkable at any age. Junior Men was won by Darnell Collins who has a physique that has definite future Pro potential.
The Masters Heavyweight was won by a super-thick Leon Eastman with the Masters Lightweight going to Alberta native Rob Belisle. Rob also won the Middleweight Class and earned his IFFB Pro card as well. Rob was easily the most ripped athlete on the stage this night and the judges rewarded him for his amazing conditioning.
Other Mens class winners on this night were Patrick Buhart in Bantamweight, Issac Vilankulu in Lightweight, Gordon Nelson in Welterweight, Eric Amendola in Light-Middleweight, Martin Allard in Light-Heavyweight, Mark Richan in Heavyweight, and Mike Van-Wyck in the Super-Heavyweights.
There was one last Pro Card to be handed out to the Overall Mens Winner, and in my eyes it came down to the well balanced, in your face mass of Mike Van-Wyck and the ultra razor sharp Rob Belisle.. In the end the judges went with Ontario’s Mike Van-Wyck who impressed me with his well controlled posing that helped show his physique to its full potential.
I would like to thank CBBF President Mark Smishek for his gracious hospitality in Vancouver and congratulate all the competing athletes who proved on this night that the Canadian Muscle scene is as strong as ever.
