Mayhem Reigns in Kansas City

By: Mark Mason

Kansas City’s Folly Theater could barely contain the excitement of this year’s Muscle Mayhem Bodybuilding, Fitness, and Bikini Championships. Eleven hundred spectators, eighty competitors and the dangerous duo of guest posers Marvelous Melvin Anthony and Dennis “The Big Bad” Wolf was the perfect mix of pandemonium to out do the previous years. Once again the husband/wife promoter team of Chad Nicholls and Kim Chizevsky were at the helm.  Along with Nicholls and Chizevsky rising star MC Tim “TNT” Tialdo threw a party that will not be long forgotten in KC.

In the women’s figure class at it was a shapely Shelly Antle that won the first place award over a much-improved Kim Fischel.  The effervescent Lilly De Choudens took home the third place trophy.

Figure B class winner Laura Bianca presented one of the most balanced physiques of the evening. Bianca, who was the solo competitor in the fitness division as well, topped second place Jeri Rease and third place Shawna Rachuy.

The very lovely Gina Juenger took the Class C first place award defeating a well-conditioned Jennifer Good one of the crowd favorites Julia Hager.

The blond bombshell Cindy Davis dominated Class D not only with her physique but also with her near perfect presentation in both prejudging and at the evening show.  Melissa Strother scored a narrow victory over third place winner Jennifer St. John.

It was Kim Hattrap over Angela Burke and Amanda Palmer in figure Class E.  Hattrap possessed some of the best delts in the figure classes as well as a tiny waist and an impressive sweep to her thighs.

As head judge Rick Kasten queued the class winners up the Folly Theater came alive. After several rounds of quarter turns it became obvious that the contest was between Cindy Davis and Kim Hattrap.  Alas, only one can be declared winner.  On this evening in Kansas City it was Cindy Davis that went home with the figure overall award.

As the masters men bodybuilding classes played out it was apparent that the judging would be no easy task.  In the masters men 35 to 39 class the battle was between scrapper
Rafael Cruz and veteran David Yoo.  I recall Yoo from last year and he was bound and determined to make 2009 the year that he took home his class award.  Yoo’s hard fought prejudging battle only served to get Cruz’ Latino blood boiling. By evenings end Cruz, bolstered by his army of followers, had snatched the class award out of David Yoo’s grip.

The masters men 40 to 49 boasted two extremes of the physique spectrum.  The sleek, streamlined look of Doug Korshum or the massive rugged look of Gary Davies.  Korshum’s flowing posing routine perfectly complimented his classic lines while Davies tossed off poses like a barroom brawler.  Davies possessed the thickest back and the biggest biceps of the evening.  After it was all said and done the judges saw it Davies over Korshun with Jeff Lockwood placing third.

The lone master over 50 Dave Crigger gave a posing routine that brought the already keyed up crowd to near riotous proportions.

In the novice bodybuilding the name Rafael Cruz was resurrected once again.  Cruz and Crew energized the Folly bringing the decibel level up a few notches. The result was Cruz taking his second lightweight class of the eveing.

In the middleweight class it was thick as a brick Thomas Lenihan taking the first place trophy over movie-star handsome Adam Papish.  Andrew Richards placed a respectable third place in a class of eight great competitors.

Josh Hadan dominated the light-heavyweight class with his near perfect symmetry; exceptional conditioning and well executed posing routine.  Last year’s second place winner Tim Nardoni was forced to be the number two man once again and Matt Karstetter was awarded third place.

Heavyweight winner, Tavish Steele moved up from last year’s junior division to compete in the open.  His foray proved successful. He took the novice heavyweight first place trophy as well as third in the open heavies.  Another Mayhem veteran Ben Walkingshaw took second place away from Justin Wolering by a handful of points.

Debuting for the first time at the Muscle Mayhem was the new NPC Bikini division. The Bikini division arose from the ashes of female bodybuilding in the NPC.  (The Mayhem had one female bodybuilding competitor, which is one more then many of the shows I have covered recently.)  The Powers At Be decided to launch the Bikini division to encourage a softer more feminine look that will hopefully draw more women athletes to the competitions.

Bikini Mayhem kicked off with a bang.  Ten competitors brought their version of the ultimate bikini body to stage.  In the A class Trisha Des Marteau offered a balanced physique that drew quite a response from the KC crowd.  The lovely Michelle Hutton also presented well and had a smile that lit up the room.  Mar Woodworth had a captivative charisma that was impossible to ignore.

Leggy Melissa Roe owned the stage as she took first in the Bikini Class B.  The beautiful blond Jennifer Kirchoff took second place while the sultry Luba Palermo was awarded the third place trophy.

Ultimately it was the sexy Trisha Des Marteau that was declared the first Muscle Mayhem Bikini overall winner.

There is no doubt that Kansas City town that likes its beef. Be it barbequed ribs, steak or competitive bodybuilding, KC demands extra large and XL is what they got. The open light-heavy class was fifteen deep and the middleweight boasted ten well-trained men. The heavyweight class three and the super heavyweight one. But what the latter two classes lacked in numbers they made up for in size and conditioning.

But first… Rafael Cruz and Crew were back to make an assault on the open lightweight class.  Once again Cruz took the class. After three wins you would think the first palace trophy would become commonplace. Not for Cruz, he received the award as if it was his first of the evening.

Middleweight Luis Santa posed his way to the number one spot over novice middle winner Thomas Lenihan.  Chad Frenzel took third place Kelly Pollman was awarded fourth but garnered some serious applause for his great posing routine.

In the light-heavyweights Josh Hadan crossed over and defeated Jeremy Johnson, Brian Teach and Umeme Battle for first place and the right to move on to the open overall.

2008 novice overall winner, James Campbell, was back this year after adding twenty-seven pounds of solid muscle, mostly to his legs.  Campbell’s gains were the best I have seen on the amateur level in years. Campbell’s heavyweight nemesis Brett Becker stopped by KC on his way to the Jr. Nationals.  Both physiques were radically different.  The taller Campbell brought a flowing build while Becker presented a thicker denser package.  The judges opted for Becker’s thickness.  Young Gun, Tavish Steele was on hand to receive the third place award.

The one super-heavyweight was Andrew Charles.  Charles lined up with heavyweight Becker, light heavy Hadan, middleweight Santa, lightweight Cruz and the bantam James Northington. Hadan’s symmetry was hard to argue with. He possessed great lines and presented himself well throughout the comparisons.  Santa’s physique as well as his on-stage experience was not to be underestimated.  And Brett Becker never took his eye off the outsider from the Mile High City.  As assessments continued it became aware that Hadan’s lack of muscle maturity was his Achilles’ heel.  Time is on Josh Hadan’s side.

After the posedown and a long pause by MC Tialdo, Brett Becker was awarded the title of 2009 Muscle Mayhem overall Champion. On hand to award Becker with his spoils was the 08 Mayhem overall winner, Kevin Jordan.  Both Jordan and Becker will be facing each other in Chi-Town in less then three weeks at the NPC Junior Nationals.

Now three years in the running the word is out on the Muscle Mayhem.  Located in the perfect spot to attract competitors from the southern states, the Midwest and the eastern seaboard the MM is one of the fastest growing shows in the country. See you there next year.

  1. Jennifer StJohn Says:

The placings are incorrect in Women’s Masters. Jennifer St. John took 2nd, not 3rd. Thanks.
