Back in the saddle
Sunday, May 4th, 2008I was in Vegas from March 28 through May 2, attending a conference. I like Vegas in general, but am not a huge fan of attending conferences there. Conference fare usually consists of high-fat, low nutritional items like cinnamon doughnuts, processed deli meats and sugary desserts. However, I am happy to report that the conference organizers have (for once) listened to the attendees, and offered decent food alongside the usual crap. For example, the morning menu featured sliced fruit, low-fat yogurt and sugar-free instant oatmeal. The lunch menu offered either a fish or poultry dish that was prepared without excessive butter or sauce. Fresh salad was always available, and the greens weren’t slathered with pre-made dressing. I couldn’t believe it.
They didn’t get it completely right. The afternoon breaks still featured cookies and Coca-Cola. (There wasn’t a Power Bar in sight.) Still, I can’t complain. Normally, I have to plan out my menu with as much attention to detail as the sessions I plan to attend, but not this time. So allow me to wish the conference organizers a public and well-deserved "THANK YOU". Whether they know it or not, they went a long way toward making everyone a little bit healthier. As the old Chinese saying goes, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."
BTW, if any of you are in Vegas, make it a point to see Spamalot. The production I saw featured John O’Hurley (Peterman on the old Seinfeld show). It was hilarious. I highly recommend it, especially if you enjoy quirky humor.
