Back at classes, new semester, new workout, new determination

January 22, 2009

Now that i’m back in the full swing of things at school and work now, I can finally figure out how I am going to budget my time so I can get my sleep, workouts, homework, and other stuff into my schedule. I worked out at the University gym today for the second time ever, and really enjoyed myself. I was able to do exercises that I normally couldn’t do at the house, such as goblet squats with the heavier dumbbells, dabbled with a rowing machine for a moment, and for the first time ever do a leg press. Finished doing my leg presses at 290lbs for the first day. I know it’s weak, but i’ll take it at the moment. Worked my way up to 80lb db doing Goblet squats, leg extensions, leg curls, the usual. Also did some one-legged squats, and my legs were really feeling it near the end. I wasn’t able to do any deadlifts or normal squats because I had no one to spot me, but I’ll get that next time. Feeling pretty good, and took creatine for the first time today after my doc told me to go for it. Played racquetball for about 30 mins after, after giving my legs a little bit to rest up. All in all, not a bad day in my humble opinion.

Work and cardio

December 3, 2008

Today, after getting close to 8 hours of sleep in, (actually, it was probably like 6 unfortunately) I actually had a morning shift at work. Was able to finally get to some cardio at about 10, where I hit the treadmill and tore it up for 2.5 miles in a blazing 35:10. I actually slowed down because I was trying to keep my HR in the CV zone, since my initial cardiovascular system needs improving. Because of my HR going past 85%, I had to take it down to a fast walk at some points, which then lowered my time of course. After that I did some back extensions with the help of my brother holding down my ankles, and some football footwork. A lot more difficult of a workout than I’m used to, and the sweat on my shirt proved it. Feeling good though, we’ll see how the legs feel in the morning though. Hopefully not horrible, since squats are in my immediate future tomorrow.

First day of Starting Strength

December 2, 2008

After a kinda easy day in class (minus the paper i just remembered I have to write and about 1000 chapters that I need to read) I got home to work out as I wanted.

Nothing too crazy about the workout, just started light and wanted to keep my form as perfect as possible. Squats, Bench Press and Deads today. I did them all at 115lbs, which I know is light to many people, but hopefully i’ll be able to put up great gains for at least a good month or two. 3×5 for Squats, 3×5 for Bench, and 1×5 for the Deads. I look forward to Thursday when I can work out again. Seems as though I’m slightly sore from the squats, i’m hoping the DB squats I did last week were enough to get the rust out of them so I wont get doms in them too bad.

Shoulder actually has been feeling good today, and pretty good for the most part. It only hurt a little bit on the bench press, so this is exciting for me. I should be able to be back to full functionality of it in only a matter of a little time.

What a fun shopping weekend

December 1, 2008

So I actually stayed awake long enough from work ending at midnight on thanksgiving to hit up a bunch of sales. After a long day, I crashed for a nice four hour nap, then unfortunately did a whole bunch of nothing. Not my finest moments, I know, but I wanted to get it all out of my system now. After a bunch of partying and not eating my best on Saturday as well, it was time to hit the field for at least a bit. It seemed like 90 minutes, but in reality was like 30-45. My legs became as heavy as stone pillars, unwanting to move.

We did a few laps around the outfield of a baseball diamond, to get the blood flowing. Then after a little bit of chopping in place and turning directions on a blown whistle. We did some agility drills with cones. Also working on backpedaling and quickly changing directions.

Tonight after work I did a little cardio by hitting the treadmill. 1.25 miles jogged today. I tried to keep my heart rate in the 160 zone. Great for trying to lose the fat and also for increasing my cardio endurance. I want to be able to last longer than I didlast time during field workouts.

Tomorrow I start rippetoes starting strength workout regiment. In need of a good nights sleep to be ready to go tomorrow.

Slightly disappointed

November 27, 2008

Well, after a long day in general I feel as though I, in theory, have accomplished nothing. Woke up a little early to get to the ice rink for open ice for three hours. I got there a little after 9, when it started, and it was already full. What a bummer. Now I had a lot of extra time before work than I imagined I would. I figured I should bring out the school books, I do have a paper due soon.

I did go on the treadmill for a bit today to get a little cardio in, since I didn’t get hockey like my original intentions. Not nearly the same, but some is better than none at all I guess. 3/4 of a mile again, this time I took the speed up a smidgen more. Finished a quarter mile in 7:27. So just under a 10 minute mile. I shaved a minute and a half of my time already, but I know this will not be enough. I need to start training for endurance as well as speed.

Talked with the guy who is going to be training me, and this Saturday will be my first field workout with him. He said he’ll take it easy on me, let me ease into it, so I dont have massive doms to discourage me from working out. I’m looking forward to it. He promises me that when I get to open tryouts in 9 months that Rich Rod is going to look at me and what me on his team somewhere. I’m going to be training for both sides of the ball, and be incredibly versatile player. His initial focus is going to be lateral movements, explosiveness and endurance. I hope he knows what he’s getting into, as well as me. Im happy he’s as dedicated as I am to this goal though.

My cardio will be changing, i’m looking to get into 2 a days. Once for intervals, and once for endurance. Might as well get both types of muscle fibers firing on all cylinders, as opposed to just or the other every other day. My legs better have the power of a rhino and the endurance of Lance Armstrong come August.

Chances are tomorrow (actually today) I will not be making a post as it will be Thanksgiving. It will also be my last hurrah of eating pleasures. Friday back on track, and more focused than ever. Come Christmas, I want people to start to notice a change, especially the out of town family. A little shock and awe is what I’m going for. Have a great Thanksgiving to everyone.

Shoulder discomfort makes technique difficult

November 25, 2008

As I said early in todays first post, I did do a light full body workout. All with light dumbbells, 15-20 lbs each. Just to knock the rust off the muscles a little bit. Hammered out some bench presses, shoulder presses, squats, romanian deadlifts, bicep curls, tricep french press and shoulder shrugs. The only problem was that during any upper body movement hurt my bruised collarbone. Slight discomfort, but enough to make my form waver. Not using good form means loss of gains, and I need as big of gains as I can get. Hopefully by either the end of the week or the beginning of next, I can return to full weight and I can start hammering out sets like my life depended on it. Polished off the workout with a light protein shake, and my multi vitamens.

Even though I have it listed on my Bodyspace page, I might as well list my supps here as well: About 3 weeks worth of Atro-Phex (had a lot leftover, see if it will help me at all), GNC Mega Man Multi Sport, CVS Fish oil capsules (5 caps a day), trying to get 10-15g of L-Glutamine in per day. My two protein powders I use are Optimum Nutritions Whey Extreme Milk Chocolate (for my after workout protein) and Body Fortress whey (for use along the lines of a MRP). Thinking I should go out and grab some Green Tea Extract capsules to give a smidgen of a hand in thermogenisis and help strip away any extra fat that I can.

I should be working out 6 days of the week (3-5 lifting, and cardio and football drills all the rest of the days minus leg day). We’ll see how it goes, and hopefully by Christmas I’ll have something to show for my efforts.

The start of an long hard journey for a real long shot

November 25, 2008

this week I have decided I need to start running to get my cardio up. Barowitz makes the defensive ends run 5 miles a day, so I need to better than that. Now I hate running, so this won’t be any fun. On Sunday when I got home from work I start my run regimen. I need to ease into it so that my legs don’t kill me for the next few days, so I ran for a huge .75 miles. Whip! The problem lies that I ran it in 8:56 seconds. Not even close to impressive. Yesterday night I tried again, this time amping the speed up a smidgen and cranked out .75 miles in 8:16. Shaved 40 seconds off, but still a disgustingly slow pace. Seems between now and the end of summer will take forever. Especially with the speed I’m going at.

This afternoon though I plan on doing a light full body workout, to give my muscles a small warning of the torture and change I have to put it through. I don’t want to just dive into a tough workout and suffer from some nasty doms. That will only hinder my initial progress and hurt my determination slighty. Any ideas of a workout for after this week of light workouts would be great too.

On a side note: my right collarbone was severly bruised after a fall on the ice. It’s just to the point where I can use it with slight discomfort. So the light weight won’t strain it or hinder it’s healing process. I want this journey to push me to my breaking point and beyond. The only thing I have to lose from this quest is weight. So it’s a win win for me.

Seeing some progress, again

July 5, 2007

I just weighed myself this morning, and i’m down to about 226ish, which is about 2-3 pounds less than what I was at previously. That is so exciting to me. I took measurements I believe a week ago, so in a few weeks I can take them again and see how i’m doing in that regard. I haven’t been doing my cardio like I should, and I know thats a bad thing. Tomorrow morning I’m hitting the cardio hard every day I can, I’ve got to try my hardest or I wont see much happening.

On a unrelated note: I just got my first charcoal grill, and I’m into the lump charcoal/smoking aspect of it a lot. I went out yesterday and chopped down my first small maple tree, and hacked it up to wood chips to start drying for use in my grill. Tomorrow after the cardio and breakfast i’m going to chop a few more down, and get a few good pounds that should last me the rest of the summer, and beyond maybe.

Boxing plus eggs don’t seem to mix well

June 29, 2007

It seems like whenever I eat in the morning, wait a good hour and a half, then box for a while, it never seems to go over very well. My stomach gets all nasty feeling, and I feel like i’m going to puke. Oh well. Worst case scenario is that I do some more cardio later before I eat another meal, after my stomach calms down a smidgen. We’ll see how that goes. Hit the weights really late last night, like at midnight. I know it’s not the best thing to do, but it’s better than nothing. Tomorrow I’m spending my morning (well 9-1 at least) at the driving range. I have to get my game back in serious shape before July 8th, when I’m in a golf outing. Even though tomorrow is considered my off day, I still wouldn’t mind getting a little bit of cardio in. Anything is better than nothing, and I really want to attain my goal. I’ve been stuck at the same weight, and now is the time to make the change, instead of sitting here feeling bad for myself that I stopped losing weight.

Starting this off, the right way…

April 12, 2007

Ok, I’m finally starting my body blog. I have thus far since starting my lose the fat diet, have lost a little over 20 pounds, and have gained muscle in the mean time. Right now, i’m at my gf’s house in London, Ontario Canada and unfortunately means I probably won’t be able to work out today until late, when I eventually get back home. I’ve been sticking to my diet for the most part, there are parts where I go off of it everyday, but still all in all incredibly more healthy than I have been in the past. I started taking Lipo 6x a little over a week ago, and so far so good. I don’t get any jitters or any abnormal feelings from it, so that’s definatly a good thing…though I did lose my little bag of them so I already missed the mornings doseage since I can’t find them. Not good. Gf’s got a horrible hangover right now, so I’ve got a good feeling i’ll be trying to take care of her all day.
