Who is old, what is old, am I old????????????

After turning 40 I do think about this sometimes.  How much time do I have left to look ok?  Is that a wrinkle? Is that a sag?  Do others see youger people than them and think, "wow, she looks older than me" when she is 10 years younger?  Why does chronoligical age have to come up so often?  I know it gives others your age or younger some kind of hope sometimes.  I look at fabulous 50 year old women and wonder if I can look that good at 50.  Why does society focus on the 20 sometimes who probably make up 20% of the entire population? Frankly, us "older people" have more money and can buy more products.  Why do they use a 25 year old woman to sell wrinkle cream?  Why is the skinny woman modeling the "fat compression" suits? What ever happened to real? Im sure men feel the same way as well….not about the wrinkle cream, but about not feeling "cool" cus all the "cool" guys in magazines are so much younger.  Maybe because older men are more acceptable in society…………we just become "old chicks".  I was thinking about this the other night while watching "Knocked up".  The sister wanted to go out, the doorman wouldnt let them in and she wanted to go dancing…..so she said she was old, her youth was gone. She’s probably supposed to be 30!  Damn, I like dancing too……apparently it’s not age appropriate to want to have fun?  Holy shit, grab my wheelchair……….
Lets sum it up this way……..Im 40 and I bet there is a 50 year old that wishes they were still 40 and there are 70 year olds who would still call us kids.  In the gym, if the 1/2 ball is laying around I cannot resist bouncing on it like a kid on a mattress, its fun, screw what people think. If I suppress my silly side for the sake of appearances I might as well wear a sign thaT SAYS "OLD FART".
No, this is not a mid life crisis.I have always been this way as the brain doesnt age like the body does.  I now just have more balls to express myself.
So where am I going with this post?  Just know that older could mean better for you.  I saw an 83 year old woman waterskiiing in a commercial a couple days ago!!  Thats 43 years away from me!!!  She was kicking ass and I was in awe.
Also, after 40 is when people who dont take care of themselves, start to get diabetes high blood pressure, heart attacks, etc.  So start taking care of yourself and maybe we will both be water skiing at 83!!

Now a days, older is better! We definitely have a better understanding of how to take care of ourselves. Now our parents generation is a totally different story, I think that the focus was all work and no working out…by the way 40 is the new 30!

Great post. I don’t want to go quietly into the night. I turn 47 in a few weeks, & I plan to be fit & active for decades to come.

My parents were examples in my life of what happens when you don’t take care of yourself. They’ve both passed, and the last 10 years of their lives were of poor quality, because they ate poorly and didn’t exercise. THAT’S NOT FOR ME!!

life isnt about your age… you of all people should know that with an amazing training and living style like yours, you’ll stay young forever… I’m sure you birth certificate SAYS your forty… but its all about what you FEEL and simply bouncing on a 1/2 ball shows you have twice the juice flowing in you more than any 40 year old i know.
You look amazing.. and that doesnt sag or wrinkle!

that younger crew is more influential to marketers thats all as far as the age this i believe there is regular age then there is fitness age…there are some amazing 40-50-60 year olds out there. look at this site ironically the first thing i look at is age…amazing the fountain of youth is in the gym…

Hey Fern, you are so right. It doesn’t hurt either that lifting helps keep one looking younger. You sure as heck don’t look forty. Keep up the good work. Steve

Love this blog Fern, I never really think about my age. I do love freaking people out in conversations about kids … "I have four, 29,27,22 & 13…" the response is usually, "Whoa, you have a 29 yr old kid ?! How old are you ?" Or the gal at work on my 48th B-day, she thought I was 35, she turned 40 a couple months later…
I have clerks at the grocery store bending over staring at my butt while I’m in the next line…I just giggle to myself … AGE is just a number, not a reason to stop living (hmmm, I like that line, maybe I will use that on my page, hehehe).
My Papa was always a big kid and a man I admired for always being young at heart.

Fern I have no doubts you will live a long happy and healthy life…

Thanks for this, Fern! You wrote it like it is. I’m about to be 42 on the 21st of Dec.. I get told I don’t look it. I still run a 6 minute mile and wear my teenaged kids out. Thank God for the Gym! The true temple of worship and contemplative introspection. Is not focus and goal oriented discipline prayer and meditation? The reward? Your apparent prolonged youth!

This post is exactly why I so value my "over 40" and fabulous friends. Women defying the age sterotype BS by simply being beautiful. Not "for their age". Just plain fit and beautiful. And the over 50, and over 60, and beyond fit and beautifuls ROCK!! With 50 looming for me next year, I don’t want to be "distinguished". I might as well be "EXtinguished". I’m shooting for more youthful muscle. Follow me, those who dare!!!

OMG Fern, I thought the same thing I watched "Knocked" up a few weeks ago with my 20 year old son and thought what a dmn pig when she wanted to go dance and then the old syndrome. I too still like t o dance and those damn 20 yr olds i see in the bar are like the 16 year olds wqe use to deal with in school, giggly , half drunk and not doing a good job of handling it and then their drama is relentless and the only dumbell they probably saw was in an infomercial or magazine. I see it at the gym too all the young girls come for the tanning bed and the treadmill and Never dare to venture to the other side of the gym where the free weights are even the cables! Yet they have the nerve to look at me like " who does she think she is " I just have to laugh. I posted a blog on that a week or so ago about she thinks she’s all that.. I too will be 40 in 5 months and ppl do tell me I do not look 40 and I am good with that, I look in the mirror some days and think it would be nice t ob 25 or so again but then I look again and say damn good job for almost 40 and then I just want to go back to the gym again and maybe fit in another workout. I do not look as good as alot of the women here but that is becasue I gget in and fall back last time was a pinced nerve that had me where I could not even curl a 10lb dumbell w/ my left arm so I thought best to rest and let it heal. Secondly, trying to find a commited workout partner in this damn town is a joke! the guys tend to intimidate me but one day I will be over that as well. I have always thought you were awesome and thanks so much for being a real person and helping to motivate us other 40 yr olds!

Yea…i have allways been a kid at heart… i have refused to "conform" & adapt into the narrow minded assembly line lifestyle of the "adult figure" that try to label you as an outcast & try to figure a logical explanation why you have to look so good by a degradeing comment, just to make themselves feel better about how unhealthy, out of shape, & unhappy they really are! …like the cartoon Popeye, when his pappy says "yer as old as ya feels young"! I know we all must die sometime, but, I love life, & will allways be free at heart!… i am what i am, & thats all that i am!
