Into the Fire - Daily Grind #245
No lofty thing can be achieved without patience and perseverance, but these two P's grow in very rare pods these days. We want what we want right now. We want it all. We want it with our instant breakfast, our automatic car wash, and our overnight miracle grow. In fact, I actually wanted it yesterday. Right now it is already late. We are constantly feed messages of getting it quick, of guaranteed short cuts, and worthless testimonials. Why? It's because you can spin smoke and mirrors all kinds of ways and get the sale, but you can't sell the truth.
Put down your deer antler spray, your shake weight, and your six minute ab belt. Ask yourself if any of that stuff worked why aren't we all walking around looking like Superman and Wonder Woman. The truth is that anything worth having takes patience and perseverance to get it.
Most people wouldn't put dirty bath water into the gas tank of their car. In the same way it is much more important to fill up your stomach with good stuff. Not only does what you eat fuel your body, but it also provides the stuff your body uses to regenerate itself. You just can't build a brick house out of straw. This is the golden road to health. Don't expect to reach the high sunny plains in just a few days though. Accept that fact and in time you will develop patience.
Put the body under resistance at least 3 times a week. This means lift something. If all you do is pick up the remote to change the channel, in time the lack of stress on the body will make even that difficult for you. Find yourself a weight training or some other form of resistance training program you like, and get busy with it. It's all about the repetitions. The strengthening doesn't come from one set, one workout, or even one 90 day challenge. It comes from thousands of sets and years of workouts. You can only get those kind of reps by exercising perseverance.
Start where you are, and then brace yourself for the fire. Doubts, discouragement, and setbacks are the impurities that must be burned away if the gold is to shine forth with all it's brilliance. It is for this reason it is written in the scriptures:
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." --James 1:2-4
This was true when it was written about 2,000 years ago. It is true today, and it will be true for as long as there are tomorrows. You will probably never see it advertised for sale on late night TV though. Keep your money. The best things in life really are free.
