Life and Fitness - Daily Grind #216
When does life begin? This is what my wife asked me after she read an article about this new "morning after" pill. Her question came after I commented that this new "contraceptive" was an abortion pill. She said that she always believed that life started only after a baby was capable of living outside of it's mother. While that may very well be the official "pro-abortion" party line, deep within me I know beyond all doubt that life begins at conception. How can I be so sure? Forget about what all the politicians and scientist say. Life is what happens between the moment of conception and the last breath. An unfertilized egg is not life. Neither is a sperm. They are simply the building blocks. Put the two together and the natural consequence, if not interfered with, is life.
This morning in the gym I realized that fitness is like life. The egg and sperm building blocks of fitness are diet and exercise. When you put the two together, that's when fitness begins. From conception it grows in the womb of the will. To become discouraged and give up is to abort the underdeveloped fetus before it is born. The birth of fitness is that glorious moment when it is able to sustain itself. No longer does it require the umbilical cord of determination and will to feed it. It functions automatically. Working out and eating right become self-sustaining. This is fitness. It begins with a decision, carried to term by commitment, and is born through disciplined action. It is only the natural course of things.
