Nifty things about Yogurt.

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

that I didn’t know until my dietician told me…(I know I blogged already today, but this just came to mind as I was getting ready to make my smoothie and I wanted to share before I forgot to blog about it!)

Did you know that plain, nothing added yogurt is best?  I didn’t.  When they add fruits and sugars and such at the factory to make it taste better, it actually kills off the good for you probiotic cultures.  So when you buy a non-plain product it actually counters all the good stuff and just makes it a tasty snack.  And I thought I was being soooo wonderfully good eating Activa Pear!  Who knew?  Well, she did!  So always add your fruit and nuts and whatever else that makes you happy to the plain stuff at home so you can keep the benefits of the yogurt for your body.  I think that little piece of knowledge makes her worth every penny!

Also, Skim milk sucks for making it at home!  I used to make my own all the time…you just add a little plain yogurt to milk in a bowl, cover it and stick it on the back of the fridge (to keep it warm and incubate the cultures)  Well, it turns out my fridge is one of those new fangled, doesn’t throw off extra heat, kind!  So that didn’t work out so well!  We did have a few hot days, so I tried with skim and it’s all runny.  Either my house wasn’t hot enough or the milk needs a little butter fat to set right so I’m going to try 1% next.  The Skim yogurt is still good, just yop-ish and has the good stuff in it which is why I’m smoothie-ing it this week.  So, I’m still experimenting.  I’ll let you know when I find the right mix.
