Next day leg pains.

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

Why in the hell is it whenever I do legs the next 2 days I am so sore that I don’t even want to lift or walk around or do anything?  I stretch before I start lifting.  I have always been the type where it seems no matter how much I stretch my legs they never get loose so I simply do what I can.  But yesterday I did 3 sets of squats, 3 sets of deadlifts, 2 sets of hack squats, regressive leg extensions and also leg curls to failure.  And now my legs are just shot.  I can’t bend over worth a damn to get something off the floor, nor sit down on the damn crapper without supporting with my arms or plopping down.  I know they say "no pain no gain," and I like to live by "It don’t feel good until it hurts."  But this just seems rediculous.

This is why I neglected doing legs for the majority of the last 7 years and just stuck with my upper body.  I can work my chest and arms into the ground and just got a little soreness for the next couple of days, nothing I can’t take with everyday life.  But with legs it slows everything down.

I guess I’m just wondering if anyone has any advice or secrets to cutting down on the afterpains a little when doing legs cause if this keeps up I’ll probably end up falling off of the wagon again.  I don’t want to because I just started doing deadlifts for the first time in my life less than a month ago and I’m already maxing at about 350 pounds right away.  I’m thinking that isn’t too bad.  Anyways, peace out to y’all.

Week off due to work from the holiday. Happy Thanksgiving.

Monday, November 19th, 2007

Well my week off officially has started.  Last night I went to the gym for 2 1/2 hours to try and hit every major body part at least once.  I found myself doing more legs than anything else and by the time I got to my favorites in tri’s and bi’s I was gassed.  At least in the process I can be proud of the fact that I am trying to start a deadlifting trend for myself, I found a rhythm in the lift and can feel some quality work being done.

I felt the need to take the time off due to the holiday.  Working in the kitchen at Hy-Vee leaves little time to do much besides work and sleep so I felt it best to declare a week off than think I’m going and majorly dissapoint myself to not going.  At least my body will be able to take a rest from the time off.  I’m going into the week at 228 pounds, if I come out no higher than 230 next monday than I will be happy.  With being around food the whole time and having Thanksgivings with my family on Thursday and my wife’s on Sunday it will be tough.  I’m up for it and will try to stick mainly with the turkey and yams.

Anywho good luck to all that have to rough it this week and I hope we all make it to the other side with as little damage as possible.

Peace

First blog, a little bit of background

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

Well, my first blog, never done this before but I’ll just give it a little short shot.  Hello my name is Ian, I’m getting back into weight lifting again in order to drop some unneccesary pounds.  Recently this summer I developed a foot problem with plantar fascitis or however its called.  Basically is is like having flat feet.  I started when I was playing slow-pitch softball this summer, it hurt like hell but I played through the pain for weeks until I couldn’t take it anymore.  So it is feeling about 75% better and I’m getting into lifting and cardio again.

I have loved lifting weights since I was only 13 years old, that was the first opportunity I had to start lifting in school, it naturally came to me.  I’d like to think that if I hadn’t picked up on lifting weights when I was in school to train for football, I would have been a typical butterball kid through high school.  After high school I moderately on again off again hit the weights and mainly just packed on the pounds.  After Community College I went to the University of Northern Iowa an earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and packed on about 40 extra pounds in the process, most of which were within the first year.  My senior year there I took one of those laughable phys. ed. classes that they actually give you credit for, that being Weight Lifting.  I started to do a lot of things I did when I was training for football back in high school, mainly bench press and hang clean.  I felt I was good at those.  And after doing bench for a few weeks I came to realize that even after not doing any free-weight bench for nearly 4 years I was doing more weight than when I was actually training.  This was kind of a shock to me but I figured I got that gain from all the extra poundage I was already caring.

Anyways after college I came back home and to be with my future wife and officially move out of the parent’s house on my own.  It took about another year before I got back into lifting when the company I work for, Hy-Vee which is a major mid-west grocery retailer started in on a "Lighten up Hy-Vee" program to coincide with the "Lighten up Iowa" program. This was in the beginning of 2005 when this started and I started out at 268 pounds which is the heaviest I’ve ever knowingly been.  After doing the program for 2 years, in May 2006 I reached a milestone of 198 pounds, which was the first time I had been under 200 pounds since high school.  Unfortunately it was short lived.  After that I started softball and well, time to get to the gym became rare during the summer so the weight came back on.

So speeding up to now I’ve been hovering in the 230’s for about a year now and am ready to push for sub 200 again.  I think this website will help me along in achieving my goals of dropping weight and body fat and getting a little bit leaner.  I feel inspired but what others have done on this site and used it for motivation as well.  So if it worked for them, it can work for me.

I’m feeling pretty long winded here, I guess that is the History student in me, you sit through a lot of lectured at which PhD professors whom love the sound of their own voice, it kinda catches on to yourself as well.  Anywho, thank you for your time anyone who reads this and good luck with all your goals as well.
