Madame Librarian’s Pick Of The Week

“There is an hour to come,” said he, “when all of us shall cast aside our veils”.

“The Minister’s Black Veil”, is a short story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

A parable.

what are you hiding behind?

Do you know why Hooper wears a black veil.

  2. Maddi Says:

    Yes I do.

  3. shmountainman Says:

I don’t. what is the main thesis statement? What did I miss?

  4. Maddi Says:

In my eyes, Minister Hooper wears the veil as a symbol of the masks of hypocricy that the members of his parish and society hide behind.

Noone is real with one another. We hide behind a layer of societal obligations and superficial morality, which none of us are able to uphold.

Yes, I do wear a black veil as well. It is my blog. It is my way of saying, "I’m horny…you’re horny…we’re all horny." What’s the shame? We are made this way.

I want to bring the things of darkness out into the light.

Is being horny the only veil we hide behide, or shall I say you hide behide? We all hide behide many veils daily, I don’t think being horny is a veil that anyone of us hide because it’s in the dark, being horny is being horny, right?

  6. Maddi Says:

It is not that people hide behind their horniness, it is the opposite. People go around in society playing the happy neuter, when they are anything but.

I have said for years now that a big part of the obesity epidemic in our society is related to sexual repression and sex related issues.

And yes, people hide behind many veils. A happy face when they are sad. A strong face when they are weak. An angry face when they are scared. A confident face when they are insecure. It is not just sin that we wear a mask to hide, but our weaknesses as well.

I choose to make myself vulnerable and tell the truth while showing my face.

The penalty for this is that some (alot) of people are not going to like me.  We have all grown accustomed to nice little lies rather than the truth.

As for me, I keep remembering a line from the 1950’s version "Moulin Rouge."

"Seargeant, I am not a moralist. I do not judge people for who they are. Only rather, for not being who they seem to be."

This is how I feel implicitly.

  7. R8TDSXY Says:

So true, So true, I feel yah on that one. The line from Moulin Rouge, good one. I appreciate your honesty and we need more like you.

  8. shmountainman Says:

Well, thats kind of what I was heading towards only because it has a lot of resemblance to "The Scarlet Letter". And, just like that book, the people are the main setting. But, I think it isn’t about hypocrisy, it’s more of the towns people not living their lives in true puritan ways. So, you can argue that he (Hooper) is wearing the veil for a hypocritical society, even if they are horny or not. I think he’s being over dramatic on societies impure thoughts. And in my opinion is why Eve took a bite out of the apple. And also why your are walking around in this world as clothed Maddi. Not luscious, beautiful naked Maddi.
