What a difference…

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

cathjrnat1.jpg

a few tweaks can make!  so I am on day number 4 of my new diet which new iffb pro Catherine Holland and her boyfriend Jason did for me and my trainer is amazed at the difference.  The calories are about the same, same number of meals  - two main differences  - No more eggs or egg whites and the only starchy carb (other than green veggies) is oats and I only get them twice a day after cardio - so once in the morning after morning fasted cardio and then again at night after my evening cardio.  I also get 1/2 a grapefruit w/protein before my evening workout.  I think these two (Catherine and Jason - not the oats and grapefruit although let me tell you they taste pretty freaking amazing after all those green things LOL) are great they have been super nice and let me tell you their cardio workouts are brutal but very effective.  I have lost 2 lbs and another 2%bf just this week.  They definitely know what they are doing!! Just look at Catherine she is the poster gal for what they are looking for now in figure - nice feminine muscles with full bellies.

Now I am not suggesting this type of diet is for everyone,  unless of course you are part of the crazy group of us who likes to get into bikinis and high heels and be compared to other women on stage! :)   But the take home lesson from this that can be applied to anyone and everyone is that when you body reaches a plateau it is time to shock it.  Whether that means switching up some aspects of your diet or upping your cardio intensity - (or both if you like me and have a contest in 5 weeks) - the body adapts and you always need to keep it guessing!

Good luck my fellow last man standing gals and keep up the great work!  I am cheering you all on from my various cardio torture machines! :)

calorie calculator

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Ok so I was thinking what if I mow the lawn tomorrow morning instead of getting on the elliptical- I wonder how many calories I could burn?  so I did a search and found this cool site where you can put in everyday activites and your weight and it calculates the potential calorie burn so I thought I would share! An hour of lawn mowing with my push mower can burn 300 calories which is about the same as what I burn 40 minutes on my elliptical - sweet!!

Killer leg workout with videos!!

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Worked legs today and did a great exercise that Fern has on her videos - it is a lying leg press on the smith machine and it rocks!  Here is Ferns video check her out!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIHIG8EAsxc

I did three sets single leg working up to a 45lb plate on each side and finished with 15 both legs just to really fatigue the muscles.  Then I did these funkiy squats I saw Jenny Lynn do - wide leg stance and she thrusts her hips forward at the end of the move to involve the glutes more - 3 sets.  Then I did lying legs curls, single leg presses on the sled with my feet really high and finished with frog squats holding a 40lb dumbell in front of me with two hands.  Many of these I got from a video that Jenny Lynn did with the trainer Charles Glass - here is the link!!

http://thefitshow.tv/remastered/season3/?videoId=331187288

Then I did 1 hour on the elliptical swithcing direction every 10 minutes- no hands!  I did the glute program at 3-4 resistance and burned 600 calories (thank goodness American Gladiators was on to keep me occupied)  And I finished with 20 minutes on the arctrainer at 10% incline and lowest resistance and burned another 200 calories.  Starting tomorrow I am going to start the dreaded 30-40 minutes cardio before breakfast which I loathe but I think it will help boost my metabolism and fat burning.  I did lose a pound this morning and broke the 150 barrier so I am psyched.

That’s all for tonight - sweet dreams of small tight glutes everyone! :)

cardio cardio cardio and woops too much fiber! :)

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

I was an animal this morning.  Woke up and decided to ride my bike to the gym (about 20-25 min ride) workout shoulders (my absolute fav) run 5k on the treadmill and then ride my bike home.  It actually worked out quite well - It was sunny and gorgeous on my way to the gym so I was nice and warmed up (aka sweating like a piglet) when I got there.  Had a nice strong shoulder workout and mixed it up with some different excersizes - did dumbell arnold presses while squatting, alternating overhead db presses, corner barbell shoulder presses, reverse pec-dec for rear delts and finished with super set of cable lateral raises  and then did cabel lateral pull downs - sounds wierd but my delts were super pumped when I was done.  Then I ran 5k in intervals from 3.5 up to 7 and did it in a decent pace of 40 minutes considering I was walking half the time.  So i stretched drank a whole load of water and told myself I would do a nice relaxing pace for the bike ride home - NOT!  As soon as I left the gym I noticed the sun was gone and there was a line of HUGE black clouds in the distrance.  Rut-roh - looks like I need to book ass home to avoid getting a) soaked and b) struck by lightning which I could hear in the distance.  So I put the petal to the metal and got home just as the first giant rain drops started to fall!  Yipee!

Ok so then I started to cook up some beautiful salmon I got at the market yesterday and WHAM I get a stomach crap (all I can say is thank goodness it waited until I got home!).  Ok so I have been taking fiber for the last couple days to keep thing moving along as I was feeling even more full of SH*#T than usual! Literally!  Well seeing that I am not the most patient person I started twice a day and when that didnt really produce any results I took 3 servings of fiber yesterday.  Well let’s just say I am now really cleaned out - I guess all that cardio and fiber created a small explosion! LOL  I know gross and way too much information but I just had to share! :)   Note to self - BE MORE PATIENT!  Happy Sunday everyone!

Jules challenge

Friday, July 25th, 2008

So I am super psyched for this team effort - It is always so nice to see people working together towards a common goal and helping each other and it is one of my favorite things about this site!  I am honored to be a part of this community and I truly mean it when I say I am happy to help anyone who has questions on diet etc - will happily share what has worked for me.

Ok so for those of you who havent followed my profile or blog I am a 44 year old national level figure competitor who did her first figure contest at 42 and qualfied for a national show at two different shows last year the the young age of 43!  So since I am not getting any younger so I decided about 12 weeks ago to try and do the Team Universe national show on September 6th in NYC.  I have since lost about 18 pounds but have about 10 more to go if I really want to be competitive against all those girls who could be my daughter.  And boy these last 10 do not want to leave my butt! My upper body has leaned out nicely but yes I still have junk in the trunk! LOL

So my plan is to maintain my super strict super restrictive contest diet, cut out all cheats and ALL ALCOHOL (does anyone else struggle with this at all the summer BBQS?)  Actually another gal on this site told me about BLISS SHOTS - and I am ngoing to purchase some from bbding.com - she says she carries them with her to parties and drinks them so she doesnt feel like an outcast and they make her feel good so I will let you know what I think - just ordered them today.

I also have a secret weapon that I will share with everyone- I have hired Catherine Holland (she just won her pro card at the junior nationals in Chicago) and she is going to give me a diet and workout for my last six weeks of prep!  WOO-Hooo and I will most certainly share with anyone who is interested!!

I have a great scale from TANITA called the IRONMAN which I got for a really good price on ebay and it measures your bodyfat.  As on today I am 150 and 18%bf and I need to be around 12%bf which means I need to lose 9 lounds of pure fat and this is how I will track my progress plus starting tomorrow I am going to have hubby take some pictures and if they are not too terrible I will post them weekly!  So there you have it!

I have to go do some cardio but I will log back on later if anyone has any questions.

Ladies start your engines!! :)

Super easy Hot weather healthy treat!

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Ok many of you have probably already done this but I have to share - put a scoop or two of your favorite protein powder in a bowl - (today I was craving chocolate so I used double dutch chocolate isopure), add two packets of splenda (is it wrong that I have found myself stuffing my pockets with these at starbucks ?:)  LOL - add just a little bit of water (about 1/4 cup) and stir until well mixed.  Stick the bowl in the freezer for about 20-25 minutes and VWAA-LAAAH!  Taste like a fudgecicle but much better for you!  I also tried vanilla isopure and added a natty peanut butter swirl which was really good too!  Hope you like and have a great weekend! Off to the gym for me!

Tilapia not so good after all….

Monday, July 14th, 2008

I must admit I have a love/hate thing with Talapia - love it because it is an inexpensive low fat protein source but hate the fact that it is raised in someone’s basement in China and fed stuff that fish doesn’t naturally eat (usually corn).  Well now I have another reason NOT to eat it during my contest prep! :)  I know some other figure gals who that is ALL they eat!?

From today’s news;

Popular Tilapia Might Not Help Heart

By Amanda Gardner
HealthDay Reporter

FRIDAY, July 11 (HealthDay News) — The wildly popular farm-raised fish known as tilapia may actually harm your heart, thanks to low levels of healthy omega-3 fatty acids and high levels of unhealthy omega-6 fatty acids.

New research suggests the combination could be particularly bad for patients with heart disease, arthritis, asthma and other diseases involving overactive inflammatory responses.

“If you’re in a vulnerable population such as a heart disease patient, you need to be very careful with what you’re eating, and that includes everything,” said senior study author Dr. Floyd H. Chilton, director of Wake Forest Center for Botanical Lipids, in Winston-Salem, N.C. “But when it comes to fish, there’s not a more important thing you can do for heart disease than eat the right type of fish or take dietary fish oil. There is evidence that you may harm yourself by eating the wrong kind of fish, and [farmed] tilapia and catfish are the two that fall into that category.”

“I don’t think that this is an issue for everyone, any more than eating a hamburger is an issue for everyone,” Chilton added.

The study was published in the July issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

As for suppliers, “the industry needs to improve ways of farming fish,” said Katherine Tallmadge, a national spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. “The whole idea of farming is a great one, but they’re feeding the fish food that’s inexpensive, so they can keep the price down, and it’s having an adverse effect on the nutritional quality of the fish.”

Several health groups, including the American Heart Association, recommend eating two servings of fish a week, preferably fatty fish such as salmon. The reason: primarily to increase omega-3 fatty acids.

But no one has really looked at the nutritional effect of an explosion in farmed fish (increasing at an annual rate of 9.2 percent, compared with 1.4 percent for wild fish). In particular, inexpensive tilapia is exploding in popularity.

This study used gas chromatography to analyze the fatty acid composition of 30 widely consumed farmed and wild fish.

Farmed trout and Atlantic salmon had relatively good concentrations of “good” omega-3 fatty acids compared with “bad” omega-6 fatty acids.

Farm-raised tilapia and catfish, on the other hand, had troubling ratios.

Tallmadge recommends looking for wild fish. Wild salmon, even canned wild salmon, has high levels of omega-3s and is an excellent source of protein. “It can be fairly economical,” she said. “I buy frozen salmon at Trader Joe’s for about $7 a pound, that’s $2 a serving.”

Concentrate on cold-water fish such as salmon, rainbow trout, sardines, tuna and anchovies, all of which have healthy fats, added Marianne Grant, a health educator with Texas A&M Health Science Centers Coastal Bend Health Education Center, in Corpus Christi.

“In the 1970s, we lost the ability to feed the planet with fish we catch,” Chilton said. “Farm-raised fish has to be part of our future, but we must do it correctly. We must feed animals the correct foods. Animals become what we feed them, and we become what we eat as well. The food chain is fairly consistent.”

The balance battle…..

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

jelenafront.jpg

So it is 8 weeks and 2 days to my show and things are going quite well.  I had last week off from work which was nice.  I took advantage of the crappy weather and really concentrated on training, eating and sleeping and lost another 2 lbs.  I actually dialed back the cardio a tad this week because I don’t want to lose too much too fast…if I lose too fast it all seems to come off my upper body and I look unbalanced.  Of course like anything else there are pluses and minuses to being tall - I can carry a lot of muscle and not look to blocky but I can also look too stringy.  So with the judges rewarding the softer physiques I want to maintain just enough muscle.  Plus I have hips so I need to keep my delt caps and lats to balance those glutes! :)   I was happy to see Jelena Abbou do so well at the Houston pro because she has a similar shape to me with the small waist and some hips.  I think she had been overlooked and perhaps initially penalized for being too soft - funny because I think she brought the most conditioned package ever and placed really well.

I am also doing one thing a bit different this diet and eating more real food as opposed to shakes.  (I bought the Egg Whites International pasturized egg whites with the pump from here at bodybuilding.com and I highly recommend them!  I bought the 2 half gallon and put one in the freezer.)  It requires a bit more cooking as well as a freezer full of dead animals but I am much less hungry with the same amount of calories.  I have some Isopure no-carb on hand in case of emergency (I love the cookies and cream flavor also from bbding.com) but for the most part have managed to stay with the real food.  I also bought some REDLINE energy drinks which I take before my workout and I love them.  The give me a total rush of energy without the crash.  My trainer can’t believe how much energy I have on so little carbs.

Thanks to everyone who has been sending me kind words and well wishes it is much appreciated!  Some of you have also emailed me for workout suggestions and I am happy to give you what seems to work for me.  Keep training hard and I hope to finally meet some of you at Team U!
