Getting Started…
February 2, 2007I’ve started browsing a few of the body blogs lately. Since I haven’t yet started a log, I thought I might at least activate my blog.
I Had lifted on and off over the years. Started getting more serious and had a goal to bench 300 and dunk a basketball before I got too old (I’m in my 40s). Got stuck around 275 and started looking for better training info. Found HST and 5×5 last year, have kept learning. Now much more serious about all around strength, not just the typical curls and bench.
My current goals aren’t too specific. I want to continue to add muscle mass and get stronger. I’m 6′0" and currently around 230 lbs, finally got my arms to 16" and chest around 44". I’ve added way too much fat due to a bulk that got out of hand. However, I firmly deny all rumors of being pregnant despite appearances.
As a starting point I’ll list a few lifts, and then add my current workout before I finish updating this blog.
Flat BB Bench - Not an emphasis any more, but I did 235×7 tonight after already working hard on incline and OH presses. I could probably get that 300 now if I peaked for a couple of weeks. At some point I probably will.
OH Press - 130 lbs x 3 sets x 5 reps
30 Deg. Incline Press - 215 x 3 x 5
Pendlay Rows - 185 x 3 x 5 … pretty strict
Conv. Deadlift - 315 x 3 … could probably single 350 or more but I don’t like how flat my back is. I almost stiff-leg them, and am now experimenting with sumo style
ATG Squat - 175 x 3 x 5 … Yes, these are poor. As I say I used to mostly emphasize upper body. I also have poor leverage for squats. I’m working on them…
Well, if anyone reads this, thanks for stopping by, and I’ll post my routine shortly.
