On the Check In

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Whats up Family!!

Just got back in from the gym, so you know i’m still stoked.  I gotta keep moving so I said let me post something here on my blog.  I’m still pretty excited about being back in the gym.  I haven’t hit that plataue as yet and I hope it doesn’t rear its ugly head anytime soon.  My workouts have been pretty intense, as I only work out for about an hour per session.  But I can feel my body getting stronger, becoming familar once again with handling the stresses of the weights.

Pushing weight was never my problem, it was always my diet.  However I am proud to say that for about 2 months, i’ve stayed true to my goals.  OK aside from that fateful morning at country buffet, but that was a cheat day:).  By keeping the fat counts low, keeping my carbs in check, and taking in the right amount of protein I can feel myself sustaining more energy, retaining strength, & keeping that positive attitude going into my next work out.  Before i got back in the gym, I made a point of starting a diet plan that worked for me.  I wanted that to be my foundation.  In the past, I was more inclined to focus on mass, and figured I would always be able to pull my diet in check.  That caused me to have a weak foundation….no discipline, and no willpower to fend off the cravings for something fatty and greasy (ie… double qtr value meal….supersize please).

Honing in on eating more wholesome foods, while preparing them in ways to take full advantage of their nutrients is becoming easier everyday I stick with it.  I even made a promise to myself that this year when i break out the grill, I wont bath my meats in BBQ sauce as I used to.  Dipping can be a beautiful thing as well…lol.

Well thats it for now.  Hope everyone is doing well and making strides.  Keep in mind that like everything else, the body too adapts to change.  So if you dont see the imporvements or gains like you did in the begining, no worries.  Just stick with it, and you’ll be successful.

What’s Cooking??

Morning Family.

Since I am the type who loves food, I figured it would be cool to share some of my favorite meals with the gang.  For me, breakfast time is the best time of day for me.  It’s to the point that my wife actually stopped making breakfast because she prefers me to make it.  Guess I am the man….lol.  Anyway, once a week I’ll be more than happy to share some of my recipies……but theres a catch.  Basically if you eat from my plate, you gotta share yours too, you dig?!!

So for starters I’ll share one of my favorite breakfast meals.  Its my Chicken Fajita Omlette

Ingredients: (NOTE: I don’t measure anything, I basically prepare as to how hungry I am at the moment, so use your own judgement)

  • chopped Green Peppers
  • chopped Red Peppers
  • chopped Yellow Peppers
  • Onions
  • Tomato (not necessary if you dont like them)
  • 1 whole chicken breast cut into cubes
  • 4 egg whites (you can use more or less, completely up to you)
  • Cooking Spray (Preferably Olive Oil)
  • Mild or hot salsa on the side
  • OPTIONAL: Some might think its a bit dry, so you can sprinkle a litle cheddar just to soften it up a bit.

This meal is pretty high in protein, low in fat (provided you ex-out the cheese), and it gives me a good kick on the mornings i make it.  I think you guys might like it.  Enjoy.

Zoned In

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Hey Fam.

You know I couldn’t let the day go by without writing something on this damn site. But I just had to share this afternoons work out with somebody…..and well, this will have to do.

So have any of you ever been so locked into a work out, that you dont even notice your surroundings?  I mean you can navigate around people and equipment, but you don’t really hear the comotion, the loud talker leaning on the smith machine, you don’t even really hear the music playing, you are just totally ZONED IN!  Well that was me this afternoon.

Maybe I am getting back into form…..maybe its the fact that I didn’t really get 100% out of yesterdays session, whatever it is I want more of it!!!  Forty-Five minutes had passed before I even looked up at the clock.  It was fantastic.  At one point i did  look up and saw myself in the mirror, I had to smile (not being vain here, so dont beat me up ya’ll) because I had visual proof that my program was working.

So I guess the purpose of this post is to put forth a little motivation to some of you out there.  There are going to be days when your ass is ust dragging, and it doesn’t feel like you are even going to break a sweat.  Thats cool, no worries.  You can take the "L" on that day.  Just make a mental promise to yourself, and give a warning to your body……

"I hope you enjoyed your break, cause tomorrow your ass is in for it!!!"

Push yourself to the limit, but make sure you know your limitations.

Cheaters Anonymous

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Hi, my name is Lex (Hi Lex) and I cheated on my diet this past Sunday.

Correction, I didn’t just cheat, I had an all out orgy with desert.  I was like a crack addict, and this one spot was my crack house.  But let me start from the begining.

On Sunday morning I decided to take the Fam out for Sunday brunch.  Well in actuality it was a breakfast buffet.  Yeah I was pushing the will power, but I’ve been solid for two months, and deserved a little something, something.

Everything started off great, I had an egg white veggie omlette which was fantastic, i had some onions and potatoes, southern style, I passed on the country waffles, and fried chicken…..(For those who have never had chicken & waffles, you need to schedule that meal on your next cheat day!) I passed on the cinnamon rolls, and country biscuits,  I passed on the cheese ladden grits, and I passed on the quiche.  I kept my plate (ok, fine plates) high on the protein and as low on the fat as possible. I mean lets be serious, you cant concern yourself with carbs at a buffett.  Thats like going to a club and ordering O’Dules.  Anyway, I was walking up for my third and final trip, figured I’d get some fruit that they had up there……and thats when it happened.

One of the cooks, (he had to be a hater, had to be!!)  This sumama-bitch walks out with not one but TWO trays, one in each hand.  First tray…..god damn PEACH COBBLER.  Second tray, (I mean the absolute nerve) he had Banana Bread Pudding.  I damn near froze in my tracks like a deer in headlights.  Ya’ll remember the cartoons from back in the day when the smell of food would pull someone by the nostrils……man let me tell you, I was like floating on air chasing this dude all around the table until he put those trays down.

Yeah I was mad after the fact……yeah I cried like Ace Ventura in the first movie, but c’mon….banana bread pudding!  I mean the kind momma used to make!! You can’t find that kind of cooking anymore.  Its been black balled.

So, I wanna know….becuase I can’t be the only one.

Come clean people……who cheated this weekend, and what was the food that did you in!

Was I wrong??

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Just got back from the gym, and I just have to shoot this question out to everybody.  So today was chest day, and I’m moving through my program about to hit Dumbbell Presses.  There’s this guy next to me about to do incline dumbbell presses, and he’s got 100lb dumbbells in each hand.  His spotter looks nervous as hell, like he’s not sure if he’s going to be able to lift the wait should this guy need help.

Right from the first rep he needs assistance.  Now me personally I thought he was attempting the exercise with too much weight.  If you can’t do one rep on your own then you need to lighten the load…but thats just me….safety first.  So after I watch this guy struggle doing about 4 reps, and his spotter struggle even more, he puts the weight down, thanks the guy for his help, and starts to put the weights back…..by rolling them on the floor.

When no one was looking I went up to the guy and said, "I dont mean to seem critical, but I’ve kinda been doing this for a while and feel that you would benefit more from that last set if you move down to like 85lbs.  I’ll even spot you myself to make sure you rep out"  This little bastard told me to mind my damn business and kick rocks….lol.

Now, I could have gotten pissed and used him as a plate tree, but I kinda expected that response.  My question is…..Was I wrong to try and help this person?  Or next time should I just keep my damn mouth shut?

Hey BB Fam!

Well its officially been a full week since I got back into the gym.  I cannot begin to tell you how badly i missed it.  As I stated in my bio, my at home gym just was not cutting it.  For me nothing motivates like the feel, smell, & sound of gym.  My new workout facility, 24/7 Fitness, reminds me of my old gym in Brooklyn, NY.  It aint pretty, but it’s still a hell of a place to work out.  No chrome, no neon wall paint.  When you walk in you ar either going to work your ass off, or turn around and leave.  Whats cool about it also is that its not dominated by men.  There are quite a few women there that will give a guy a run for his money.

So after today I’ll be able to at least complete some more of my stats.  So keep an eye out for me.  And yeah, more pics to come!
