Body Building & Life…Flexing Your Willpower Muscle
Sunday, August 31st, 2008Today I’ve been laying in the sunshine in between my pumping & posing and eating regime 6 days out from the NPC Team Universe National Competition in NYC….And since my brain is used to going a million miles an hour and multi-tasking like mad…this change of pace has left me pondering some things that I thought I would share out loud.
Body Building as a Lifestyle can be very representative & symbolic of our SPiritual Path & choices in LIFE in general. Let me try to explain: When most people think about a body builder’s training diet/regime the things that come to mind for most are things like "willpower, discipline, and deprivation". And it is true that a "training diet" can be a real test of WILLPOWER and sometimes the workouts can seem like an endless test of your TENACITY…but TRUE body building as a lifestyle is also a deeper expression of spiritual passion and the infinite love and desire for ones SOUL that lives in this physical body.
The choices we make as "body builders" can mirror and strengthen the choices we make on all levels of our existence not just the physical, but the mental and emotional and spiritual aspects of our BEING.
Let’s face it, food is an "EXPERIENCE" of senses…and all of us find PLEASURE in indulging these senses…some more than others but I believe it is a HUMAN quality we ALL share and should find JOY in. But there is also a PURPOSE and FUNCTION for eating…to FEED the physical body. As humans we are blessed with the beautiful "FREE WILL" to choose…to "have our cake…and eat it too". And as body builders we often make decisions about our training & diet based purely on "function"; getting that extra rep or set, taking a day off to recover, eating to feed the muscle and burn the fat, etc… Sometimes we must avoid specific things (people, places, foods), even though we "LOVE" them…We have to set priorities based on the committment we’ve made to our higher selves. We exercise this WILL POWER MUSCLE just like any other muscle and it gets stronger over time. And we see the benefits out weigh the sacrifices…
These choices though can be made from two different "mindsets". One comes from the "DARKSIDE"-the EGO-CENTRIC-JUDGEMENTAL perspective that "I am superior to everyone else…and all who don’t follow are weak or lazy"…. This is a BAD place to come from and in the end GETS YOU Nowhere on the Spiritual realm. On the other hand, youcan come from the UNIVERSAL U…the YOU that comes from the LIGHT and is connected to EVERYTHING & EVERYONE…the part of you that is a SPIRITUAL BEING & TEACHER. Choices made from this perspective are more meaningful and never leave you feeling DEPRIVED at all.
