Some call me “Super Mom”, some call me “Crazy”

Friday, April 27th, 2007

I gave a brief overview in my first blog about a typical day of this working mom who is a fitness fanatic. I, of course, view my life as normal. Others are either in ahh of me or think I’m crazy. Call it what you like… here’s how I do it for others who try to do it all.

I work fulltime as an IT Product Manager for a large software company (take a guess which one). I’m a wife and mom of a two year old son (we plan to start the process on#2 in a year or so). I also teach Kickboxing and Strength Training classes on the weekends. Oh, and I workout 6-7 days a week. Here’s what my typical week day looks like:

4:30am - Ass out of bed, down a couple cups of coffee

5:00am - Drag my ass down to the garage where I have created a mini-gym for myself and train (cardio and strength training) for about 1 hour. BTW - you don’t need to invest a lot in gym equipment to give yourself a kick-ass workout.

6:00am - Get ready for work and eat my breakfast while doing my make-up/hair

7:00/7:15am - Get my son up and ready for pre-school; pack his breakfast to eat in the car and/or at preschool

7:45am - Off to preschool/work

8:30am - 5:30/6:00pm - Work

6:00pm - Dinner and spend time with my boys

7:00pm - Bath and bedtime routine for my son; he’s in bed by 7:30pm

7:30pm - Pack my lunch/snacks and other prep work for the next day; I pack an AM snack, lunch, and PM snack. Take 15-20 mins to do this the night before and you’ll save yourself at least 30 minutes the next day.

8:00pm - Work stuff if it is a busy week, or spend time on the computer and take care of other personal stuff

9:30pm - Bedtime for me

Repeat

Let me tell you, managing a schedule like that is not easy and some days I’m beyond exhausted. What gets me through is planning. I plan my dinner menu for the week and go to the grocery store only once a week. I plan my workouts so I don’t waste time thinking about what I’m going to do. I plan what I need to accomplish each day and write it down (I admittedly do this in the car while sitting in traffic). I plan my work commitments for the year so my manager and I are clear on what I’ll be focusing on (and not focusing on). I make every moment in my day count. I try to take one day off a month to get personal stuff done (haircuts, trips to the mall, etc) so I don’t have to use my weekend time and can do it w/o my 2 yr old in tow (he’s at preschool).

I have many other tips and tricks to making the most of the limited time we have in each day and am happy to share with other busy moms (or dads). Everything from meal planning, to house chores, and having a good work/life "fit" (I don’t calll it balance because it may not be balanced… it is what "fits" me). It is possible to do it all, but you need to plan and prioritize. Good luck! ~KB chic

Hold me accountable!!

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

Why am I doing this? Creating and maintaing a My BodySpace and BodyBlog??? I certainly don’t have much time left in my day for this. I get up at 4:30am to workout so I’m ready to get my son up and off to preschool before heading to work. Then come home take care of dinner, then bath/bedtime with my son, pack my food for the next day, then spend another hour or so on work stuff (afterall, no job is done in just an 8 hour day). By 9:30pm, I am ready for bed! Then the weekends are just packed with errands, housework, teaching group fitness, and spending some time with my son and husband. So again, where do I have time for this??? Well, I decided it is time to make "time". If I want to transition into a fitness career, I need to start getting more involved in the fitness community and being a bit more serious about my training and diet. So I need your help in HOLDING ME ACCOUNTABLE! I need to spend time here at least 3 days a week (I think that’s reasonable in terms of time commitment) Now that I have an audience to share my thoughts on the whole fitness thing, I certainly will. And I will post what I ate on a particular day so I can A) get your feedback, and B) be held accountable for keeping it clean. If I know that potentially thousands of people are checking up on me, that will certainly incent me to watch what I put in my mouth! Anyway, here I am… tellin’ it like it is.

Yours Truly,

Kickboxing Chic
