Man, I feel like it has been ages since I blogged last … wait … it has!!! I appreciate all of the messages I’ve received saying that you’ve missed my daily blogging! Makes me feel real loved and supported! So what have I been up to you ask? Well, I continue to train about 5 days a week. That’s my goal, so as far as I hit the gym 4 times I am feeling great. So far, I’ve been good and have made it 5 days each week. Tonight is an off day as I am going to see a play in the evening. So, it will only be a 4-day workout week. Tomorrow is going to be serious tho’. I’ll be training with Camillia up at another Goodlife that has real stairs we can use for cardio. I think I blogged about it in my July 2nd blog. Doing real stairs is an amazing workout. We’re gunning for 45 … and may even push it to 60. She’s prepping for a couple of shows this fall, so I’m trying to help her push it! My focus now on the gym is more in the way of cardio. I keep up with the weights, but focusing on light weights, high reps and really concentrating on the movement. So nice slow and easy. I’m still loving that Stepmill routine that I mentioned in my last blog. I’ve added to it, and truss me I’m getting a wicked 60 minute cardio session. The 2 weeks following the show, I must have re-introduced something into my diet that caused me to bloat a lot. It actually got quite uncomfortable. So this week, I took out one of ‘Muscle’s’ contest meal plans and stuck to it, and supplemented with a few other items; namely fruits, frozen yogurt, cheese, rice cakes w/ peanut butter and jam and as of today I am feeling a whole lot better. I’m no longer bloated and think I have an idea what caused it. I tell you … and I blogged it once … Knowledge is power, yes … but it’s the application of that knowledge that is the true power. I just had to take it one food item at a time until I was able to figure it out. Now I know … so it’s either eliminating completely or eating in moderation.

I’m also on the whole getting the right vitamins, so I’ve worked with a nutritionist on the natural supplements that I should be taking daily. I’ve actually never felt better. With my energy levels back up to where I’m used to them being, I’m like an amazon women … I’m getting stuff done at work, around the house, and not feeling the least bit tired / exhausted. Man, when you have your health you have about everything you need!!!! I have to send a shout out to Ardene … she is a Myspace user that has religiously read my blogs and encouraged me along my journey. Well … as this small world would have it … I worked out at the Brampton Goodlife yesterday, and just as I was leaving I see this familiar face walking towards me … I’d be damned … it was Ardene!! How amazing is that! It was so great meeting her and it actually felt like I knew her! I had to give her a hug and all! Hey Ardene!!!!! Time to get off to start my day! I promise not to be such a stranger and blog more often that I have been lately.

“Being the best that you can be is possible only if your desire to be a champion is greater than your fear of failure.” – Sammy Lee Have a great day! Cheers, Nke

Hellllloooooooo!!! Remember moi? I’m back from my little hiatus. I’m feeling GREAT, PUMPED and READY to take on new challenges and achieve more goals.
Since the last show, I’ve really just been about spending good quality time with my hubby, friends & family. I did not go crazy on the eating and really just treated myself to some of my favorites on occasion. My focus right now is to bring my BF% up to an acceptable ‘preggy’ making range which is probably where I sit right now. I’m about 10 lbs heavier than my on stage weight. This for me is very practical and maintainable.
So far, I’ve been able to maintain it by continuing to eat clean and graze here and there when I feel like it. Of course the training is also a factor. Following the last show, I gave myself a few days off and then went back for one week just for cardio. I started doing this wicked intense routine on the Stepmill. It’s a 22 minutes. It’s a graduated workout, and is fairly intense. Following that, I go on the Treadmill to complete the hour. I wanted to switch up my cardio to shock my body abit so it does not get used to the Stepmill.
That was the first week. Now, I’m back at the gym. I’m hit it 4 days last week. My focus is to maintain weight and carry lean muscle. So, I focused on my cardio at the top of my workout and then weights using the ‘low rep, high rep’ technique. My rests between sets are quick so I’m getting some really good pumps. In fact, I feel like I’m hitting the muscle better than when I was pushing the heavy weight. At first, the weight feel freakin’ light, but once I get to that 20th, 25th, 30th etc. rep, I’m feeling it big time. By the time I hit the 3rd set, I may not even make it up to those rep numbers. As its summer time, I’m trying to keep my workouts short … in and out of the gym in 2 hours tops!
The official results are in for the CBBF World Qualifiers … my last show. They even posted the judges scores. It was actually a really close finish for me. The 1st place score was 27, and I was scored 29. Would you believe 3rd place score was 62. That’s a huge gap. So, in the end it really came down to 1st and 2nd. I’m actually quite happy to see that. It wasn’t much that kept me out of first place!!! Ha-ha …. The have also posted pics of all the top 3 finishers for each class. You can check this all out at www.cbbf.ca. Click on ‘results’ to see the scores or ‘photos’ to see the pics.
I’ve started working with my girlfriend Camillia. She wants to compete this coming Fall, so its her prep time now. Yesterday, we met up for leg day, and oh boy!!! … and I sore today! I’m am sooooo sore! The leg workout itself was an easy one for me as I’m just working on staying toned. It’s hard to keep the weights light, but I’m committing myself to keeping with it. What did us in was our cardio. It was a new Goodlife gym we went to. I noticed that they had a little crook that had a set of stairs that led to the fire escape. It was a 12 stair flight, and you’re gurl here had a light bulb moment ….. I decided we were going to run up and down the stairs instead of doing the Stepmill. That workout was serious!!! We were back and up them for 30 minutes. It was an intense session and really worked the glutes and the quads. It felt great and I’m thinking of now working out at that gym at least once a week so I can do them. Stupid me forgot to stretch following our workout so, I am super sore today. I’m going to have to do some stretching when I get up later ….
Get up later you ask??? … yeah, since I’m back to eating clean and all, it means making sure to fit in all my meals each day. So, I’m sleeping in today but had to get up for meal #1. I took the time to write this blog and now it’s time to go back for round 2 of shut-eye. We went out last night to and got back early this morning … y’know dem club hours time ….
I’ve also haven’t stopped the meal prep routine, so protein is packed and ready and when I wake up next I’m make up the crabs and add them. The only change I’ve done is the veggies. I steam them fresh a day or two prior and not for the week like I used to do when I was training for the shows. My hubby is prepping for a marathon, so he’s into the regular meals too … so now I’m packing double the amount of containers. Our 2nd fridge is packed solid with Tupperware!! Ha-ha.
Anyhoo … have a blessed Sunday. I’m back to blogging, so I’ll see you back here soon.
Cheers,
Nke

What is this … three days of blogging in a row … WOW!

I’m addicted to blogging, and completely forgot how much I enjoyed getting my thoughts into print … or whatever you’d call this.

I have another day off… so rather than sleeping in, I decided to get to the gym early and get it over and done with for the day. I love my morning workouts!

Today was back, delts, and abs. I’m doing abs daily only for a short while as I want them to look good for my trip. I try to make sure I do them every 24 hour period. Probably a bit of over-training there, but so far I’ve been seeing the progress so I’ll keep it going.

Today, I started with seated rows, then super-setted straight arm and close-grip pulldowns. For the straight arm, I kept my hands closer together. Normally, I opt for a wide grip. Following that, I did rear delts, then super-setted cable crossovers (for delts) with alternating db shrugs (a Shaun ‘Muscles’ Campbell spesshy). In between the sets, I did abs and some glute work.

I switched up my cardio, on my hubby’s recommendation, and did one hour of the elliptical. I’ve never really been a big fan of that machine, but I have to say today I got a really good 60 mins cardio session. I was impressed.

Now I am home. Just finished up my first meal (a meal for champions - eggwhites and oatmeal). I picked up a great Flax & Oat bread yesterday at Sobhy’s which I had a piece of today, dry … It was nice. Especially with my eggwhite & broccoli omelette. Nice switch from my eggwhite and oatmeal pancakes. I had fruits with my oatmeal, which was quite nice; strawberries, blueberries & blackberries!!

Anyhoo … off to cook some protein for the hubby and then off to bed!!!! Did I mention i am OFF today!!! Yippppeeeeee!!!!!

Have a great day!

Cheers. Nke

So, it’s like this … I had such an AWESOME leg workout that I just had to blog about it.

I trained with my hubby today. We started late, coz’ we went out last night and did not get home until the wee hours of the morn. Of course, I was up first … of course…. ha-ha. So I decided to go get groceries out of the way so we could come straight home after our workout.

We started with hamstrings, and ended with leg extension. We did a superset of lying hams and deadlifts, then leg press, then hack squats, then leg extension … I threw in ad & ab-ductors at the end, while he did calves. We did hit cardio for a good 30 mins sesshy. What made this workout so good was the burn I experienced with each set. As hard as it was, I used very light weights, but did alot of reps. I aimed for 25-30 for each set. It was a KILLER!!!! Felt DAMN good tho’. We ended the workout with stretches and abs. Definitely a good 2.5 hours of our time!! ha-ha

Now, its time to get busy with the cooking … gonna try some different healthy meals this week. Plan is to stir-fry (using cooking spray), spinach, onions, peppers and zucchini. I’ll use some to include in each container as the veggie portion, and then I’ll make up some wraps using it, chicken breast, or tuna with some mustard. I bought these whole grain flax wraps that are really great!

I’m also going to make some Whole Grain Healthy Banana Bread. I believe I shared that recipe with you earlier this year … you’ve have to search the archives. However, if you don’t have the time to do that… holla, and I’ll share with you again.

On another note, I’ve been looking at the compeition schedules for 2008 to figure out what shows I will do. I’ll have to hook up with Muscles … remember him??? For those of you that don’t, his name is Shaun ‘Muscles’ Campbell, www.shaun-campbell.com, an awesome trainer and friend that I had the best fortune to work with last season. Anyway, I’ll have to hook up with him to figure out the plan of action for 2008. I’ll let you in on my plans as soon as I’ve figured it out …

Anyhoo … blogged three days in a roiw… that quite a feat for me these days.

Have a blessed Sunday!

Cheers, Nke

Okay … it’s been a LONG while since I’ve found the time to blog two days in a row. I’m doing so today, coz’ I felt the need to share my gym experience with you.

First, let me tell you how yesterday was truly a ‘me’ day…. In all honesty, the only interaction I had with the outside world was when I blogged yesterday. After that … it was me, my couch, and a bunch of taped shows on my PVR!!!! Can I say how the PVR technology is so amazingly AWESOME! If you don’t have one … GET ONE!!!

Okay, I digress …. back on track….

So, woke up this morning…. somewhat refreshed, but a little sluggish from being a couch potatoe yesterday. Got out of bed, and headed out to the gym. Today was arms, calves, and abs day. Finished all that up within an hour. As I was making my way through my sets, I kept looking over to the Steps. First, I was hoping that no one would be on them when I was ready for my cardio. Then, I had moments, where I was hoping both would be in use and all the treadmills would be in use, and all the elipticals and all the bikes .. you get the drift …. So, when cardio time rolled around, it was not the latter will that presented itself. In fact, not only were the two Step machines available, but my favorite treadmill and several bikes and ellipticals were also available. Needless to say, the choices were endless …..

Don’t know what happened to me today, but I was dreading the cardio!!!! I never dread cardio! LOVE cardio. Today tho’ one hour seemed like an eternity to have to get through.

Oooohhh… I forgot to mention that my iPod was not completely juiced up. So, I had to pull out the ever handy charge cord I have and plug it into the gym computer. If there was ever a time in my life I needed an hour worth of juice in my iPod, it was today.

So, I prep the machince, retrieve my iPod, get atop the Steps, enter my weight, the minutes (a reluctant 60), set the level and started moving …. I told myself before I started that 60 mins was really 30 mins. That’s a mental trick I use. On the Steps, when you select 60, each bar interval is 2 mins, making it 30 bars I need to get through. Hence 30 mins. Easy breezy right!! haha So, with the feeling of only 30 mins to get through, I challenged myself to beat up the machine! I said, I’m going to work this machine today so that when I come to the gym tomorrow, it’s going to have an ‘out of order’ sign on it!!!! ha-ha Can I tell you how I WORKED that machine for 60 mins!!! I kicked it’s butt!!!

That was 9:35 AM. Now, 11:54 AM, just over 2 hours later … I’m feeling on top of the world … y’know why …. coz’ I got through it.

Y’know, I could have packed it in at 9:35 AM and just gone home. Or opted to do 30 mins, or chose a different and less challenging machine. But I was like ‘hell nah’, I’m here and I’m going to make the most of it. I can feel tired and lazy later today … there’s still 12 hours for that… Now that I got through it, I’m not lazy at all. In fact, there is nothing I can’t do today after getting through that!!!! ha-ha

Hopefully, this has inspired you to set a goal and achieve it today. Or, at least get you through something today that you really are not up to doing.

Have a wonderful Saturday and blessed Sunday … I just may find some time on Monday to holla…. Until the next time.

Cheers, Nke

Before I start blogging, I have to share a quote that I just heard and absolutely love; ‘God’s delay is not a denial!’. Tell me that’s not an awesome quote.

Can I tell you how I did not realize just how tired I have been. I have today and Monday off. I went to the gym early this morning, around 5:30 AM, worked out for about 2.5 hours and then came home. Since then …. can you believe, I’ve done nothing other than sit on my couch!!! It feels totally AWESOME!!!

Okay, I lied somewhat … before I made it to the couch, I seasoned up some chicken and lean pork sirloin and popped it in the oven. Figured I’d prep some of my protein for the next week so I can really chill out on the weekend.

I’m going to be hitting the gym 4 days straight. Went today, going tomorrow, Sunday and Monday. I may even pull a Tuesday evening workout, and then rest it up on Wednesday before I start up again. I believe I mentioned in my previous blog that I am prepping for Xmas vacation in the hot and sun. So, got to get the bod beach ready!!! haha

So today, I trained chest and delts. I focussed on high reps, lighter weights. Made sure to select a weight that would have me at failure at 25 to 30 on each rep. I did 4 sets for all my chest exercises and 3 sets for my delt exercises. I’ve kicked my ab workouts up a notch, and tend to train them at each workout session. I see them coming in, so that’s good. They should be ready for Dec 23rd … at least hopefully … haha

Hey, got something for you to try … when you do Cable Crossovers for your chest, at the end of each set, superset with penguin claps. If you don’t know what these are, holla and I’ll explain. It’s wicked. Work right down the middle of your breastbone and creates really nice definition.

I’ve kicked my cardio up and cut back on my daily protein intake. I wanted to look leaner during my vacation, so I’ve been doing this for about the last 2 weeks. I’m doing anywhere from 60 - 75 mins of cardio after my weight training session. On leg days, I do only 45-60 mins since my leg workouts usually have me beat by the end of them.

Well, I don’t really have much else to say, and I definitely don’t want to start boring you. So, until next time .. I’m out! Enjoy your weekend

Cheers!

Wow … I can hardly believe that it has been a good 3 months since my last blog.

Lemme see … To be quite honest, my life has been tres GRAND. I have absolutely no complaints and I find mysely to be very appreciative these days of all the things I have in my life.

Not sure if I shared this previously, but I was featured in the December issue of Oxygen magazine! They picked up my story April of this year, and interviewed me in the July timeframe. If you have not had a chance to read it, I think you can still grab it on the stands for a few more days or view / read it online at www.idfa.ca. This is the main site for International Drug Free Athletics, so while you’re checking out the article make sure to peruse the rest of the site. You will not be disappointed.

For those that followed my blogs closely this year, will recognize that site as belonging to my trainer, Shaun ‘Muscles’ Campbell.

As always, I continue to train and enjoy a lifestyle of clean eating. As I am off-season, I’m all about 80-90% clean eating and 10% earned cheats!! By earned cheats, I mean I have to work to earn it. That’s a combination of weight-training and cardio 4-5 times a week and dedicated clean eating 5-6 days a week.

I’m trying to add different stuff into my fitness training, so I’m back playing soccer, I’ve started doing alot of sprinting drills, and switch up my weight-training program quite often.

Well, I’m off to prep meals for the week so gonna sign-off…. I promise to not be such a stranger…

Cheers, Nke

I struggled with water retention for some reason from this weekend, but recovering now. I’ve realized that I have my body needs 3 days to balance out. Whether after a treat meal, or an unexpected water retention issue it’s always 3 days of clean eating and 3-4L daily water intake to get me back on track.

My cravings are running made wild right now…. I’m holding a brainstorming sessions with some of my team and ordered in pizza. One of our EA’s helped me order two small pizzas. In the event I choose to indulge, I made one; thin crust, whole grain bread, easy on the cheese, easy on the sauce, chilli chicken, fresh mushrooms and sundried tomatoes. I’m bringing foil in my lunch bag, and will bring my slice home for my weekend cheat. Isn’t that a good idea????? Ha-ha I’ll have to blog and let you know how well that plan works out for me! Have you ever tried a workout of Giant Sets?

Wow, I’m surprised that I’ve found some time to blog back to back days. I always have the intention to do so, but next thing I know the 24th hour of the day is upon…. This has been what my days have felt like ever since I finished competing this season. It’s a wonder how I got through those weeks of training…. Some things in my life were definitely neglected! So, I’m finding the time at 7:30 AM this morning since I got up to have meal #1 and put our weeks worth of chicken breast in the oven to start cooking. I’m heading to the gym for 8:30 AM, so I have some time.

Anyhoo, speaking about intentions…. Yesterday, I had every intention to make it a clean eating day. I went to a BBQ that was organized by my hubby, his brothers and cousin. From the top of the week, I told myself that because of this new goal I am working towards, I can not afford to cheat on the Saturday. I had every intention…..Even yesterday morning, I was so proud with the progress I’d made shedding 5 lbs during the week. I had a look of leanness when I woke up in the morning and I generally felt ‘light’. So, my intention was to keep with that momentum and make it through the day sticking to my meals.

Somewhere during the day, something happened. I don’t know what that defining moment was, but suddenly the battle in my head began. It went something like this; Man, gurl it’s the last BBQ of the summer, how can you pack your food to bring. Man, gurl you’ve still got another 6 weeks (42 days) to hit your goal. Man, gurl it’s not going to set you back that much. It’s not like you’re going to gain back the 5 lbs. The best one was… ‘People might find you rude and ‘too good for the food’ if you pack your stuff and bring. So, I’m unfortunately blogging today with the news that the inner voice won out! I did not go there with any food packed but rather with every intention to eat what was there. Oh, the kicker is my inner voice said; ‘Don’t worry Nke, we’re just watch the portions and make sure to stay away from the carbs and just focus on the chicken and greens.’

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HA – I’m killing myself with laughter right now….. Can I say JOKES!!! I got there, and started off good. I had a small plate that consisted of two pieces of chicken and salad. That was it, and I felt ‘OK’ when I finished it. My mindset was to eat before all the people arrived so I can help with the sharing of food when the food requests started coming in.This all but worked for a couple of hours. Then I just could not resist the site of the BBQ jerk chicken, curry goat, potato salad and even the dinner rolls. So, what did I do… I made up a ‘small’ plate for myself, and then another, and then made a small sandwich using the roll and some chicken … and then another…. I almost understand the mindset of people that struggle to lose weight now… there comes a point when ur eating and you figure, well I’ve already indulged so I might as well just continue… so you go for it, and go all out! That’s what pretty much happened to me last night. Funny thing tho’, it happened over a period of hours so I never felt full… which is why I always felt I had room for more….Ugh!

Then, I got home and while I was getting ready for bed, I looked in the mirror and OHHHH BOYYYY …. I was so not ready for how I looked. Can I say ‘distended belly’!!! My gosh!!! I could not believe the transformation in just a period of 24 hours. I am not stepping on a scale for the next 3 days, coz’ I’m pretty sure that I not only gained back the 5lbs, but an additional 2-3 lbs on top of that. My water retention is bad! I believe I’ve blogged about that before. I’m not sure why it’s so bad for me… I’ve never been able to figure that one out. You know what it comes down to… and hence my choice of subject… I was not PREPARED for the aftermath of listening to my inner voice. So, it a lesson learned for me. When I’m making those type of decision… I need to also think ahead to the results and be prepared for the outcome…. Either way. So, now it’s too late to turn back time so I just have to be responsible & accountable for my choice and forge forward. I’m back on my train today and I’m putting some serious thought into going 2 straight weeks without a cheat so I can ‘get ahead’. Better yet, going to take it one day at a time and use yesterday as a lesson to myself about my intentions having to be matched with my prepardness. Have a blessed Sunday!

Cheers, Nke
