Well folks - I did my figure show!! The NPC Dutchess Classic Championships in Poughkeepsie, NY on Saturday June 28th, 2008.
I had such a wonderful time and the event was so well organized, in my opinion. Everyone there was super nice, helpful and accommodating!! I will definitely do the same show next year.
I was very impressed how there was a room for the women in the back to change with full length mirrors, and makeup tables with mirrors as well, a pump up area for the guys and gals - everyone was so helpful !! A table with pedialyte, peanut butter and jelly and several boxes of “rags” the ones that you get at Home Depot, to clean up after putting on you tan in a bottle.
Although the weather on that particular day was horribly hot and humid!! I would do it all over again in a heart beat because the individuals organizing this show (Doug Patterson, Head Judge Steve Stone, and Kenny Kassel etc etc) from start to finish made it such a positive and pleasant experience for me as well as all the other competitors!! I have heard some horror stories from friends that did other shows and most definitely that didn’t apply to this show.
My only complaint really was the unbearable heat and humidity – and of course has nothing to do with the show.
The morning of the show there was a competitors meeting at 10am followed by pre-judging at 1pm. I checked in received my number and details of what was going to take place. I wish, I would have gotten everyone’s name - but here goes.
Evon and a guy (forgot his name-so carb depleted at that point) were GREAT - they showed us what we had to do and when and coached us along the way. This is such a good thing because I can see how you can forget what your number was while on that stage – the lighting made it incredibly hot and I think coupled with water and carb depletion; sucks the brain cells right out of you LOL (sidebar- I forgot my number when I was asked to change places at the finals- however I remembered my number during pre- judging, where I was asked to change places then too; THANKS GAWD LOL!!
This has nothing to do with the show - you know what was really funny - I registered also for the tall class-which if I can remember correctly begins at 5′5" in this show;
I thought <—key word "I thought "(LOL) I was 5′5 1/2" tall.
So when I was measured, I was told I was 5′4 1/2" Tall - I was like noooooooooooooooo wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy in my Kweens Noo Yawk accent LOL. Measure me again, he measured me again, and it measured about the same. I said to him when I originally received my drivers license back in the late ‘70’s I was 5’5 ½” – he says “ well maybe it was the hair” I only had to laugh; because that was the style back then in the late 70’s early ‘80’s all women had HIGH HAIR LOL
I think I am shrinking LOL - I thought that that didn’t happen until you’re in your 60’s LOL. I believe my driver’s license also says 5′5 1/2" too; I have to double check. I just thought that that was really funny - anyway - Now I have to go back on my diet today for a July 19 show and now try to gain some height too LOL
Hmmm no wonder why my boyfriend keeps telling me I’m short
Back to show stuff –
In terms of tanning I tanned to get a good base and then went for a dark spray tan Thursday morning. I bought a product called “Dream Tan” I have heard good things about the product and decided to give it a try. I was impressed with the color that I chose (Red/Brown) and how it went on. I followed the directions exactly. I have to say that I was disappointed; only because, of the heat and humidity it didn’t hold up very well at all, each time a bead of sweat dropped anywhere on me, the product came off. I put on 2 coats for prejudging and then applied 3 more coats for the finals and had to touch up constantly.
I applied mineral oil as suggested and tested on a small area – patting it on – and the tan was coming off as well. You really can’t fix this either – or at least I couldn’t because when you reapply – you will be darker is some areas and lighter in other’s.
I was told by one of the body builders there – that you couldn’t really see my muscle definition because of it and that I should switch to Jan Tana instead.
All in all I do like Dream Tan , the color was rich and intense! However for me; with the heat and unbearable humidity – it didn’t hold up well at all and will not use it for a show.
Bikini Bite was another product that I used to keep my suit in place, that stuff worked very well for me, as I have nothing to compare it with, I give it and overall 10+++.
Dream Tan came off when I had to change into my two piece suit – and that was a mess!! I did, have time to repair the damage between changes, the cuts in both suits are different so I had to rub off the glue and with that went the tan. My daughter Jill who assisted me throughout did damage control. Without her and all the help back stage I don’t know what I would have done.
All in all I had a wonderful time !!!!
I placed 2nd in my Class and 3rd in Masters. More importantly, the Head Judge approached me before pre- judging and before finals and said that he wanted to speak with me after the show.
What an awesome person – we spoke for about 15 minutes or so and offered his advice and wisdom on what I needed to improve on etc. I totally value his opinion and so happy that he took the time to speak to me.
I am beginning to make all of the adjustments that he suggested; but of course that will take time –
More later – I’m Pooped
