The Long and Short of It

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Hair that is. I have had short hair most of my life. (And by short I mean Annie Lennox short). There were a few times I let it get a little longer (my before pic) then bam I’d get it cut really short again.
The short hair thing began my freshman year of college. It was a rebellion thing you see. My father liked long hair so he wouldn’t let me get it cut. It was a pain back then (even at shoulder length). Blow dryers were new technology. So, I cut it and over the following years it got shorter and shorter.
Twice before in the 25 years of short hair I tried to grow it out but never made it to shoulder length.
As you can see by my profile pic it is long again. Actually, my hair has never been this long in my life. It is mid back right now (when flat ironed out straight) and back to the natural dark auburn color I was born with.  This has been a two year journey (along with weight loss) of rediscovering myself.

Things I never considered about having really long hair:

*How easy it is to spit toothpaste in your hair while brushing your teeth if you aren’t careful.

*There is a reason Grace Kelly wore a scarf while driving a convertible in To Catch A Thief. You can’t see otherwise. Not to mention you tend to resemble the Bride of Frankenstein when you get out of the car.

*It is a lot of work. My hair is now naturally wavy/curly (this is a new thing since August and I am still trying to figure that one out) so drying it out straight and flat ironing is almost a daily thing (except when I am lazy like today or rainy days which I go au natural - why fight humidity?).

*It is easy to eat your hair if you aren’t careful.

* During…well…you know it seems to be everywhere. Some guys like this my husband doesn’t. He wants me to cut it short again. (not going to happen).
*It is cheaper…less hair cuts needed.

Just a few random long hair thoughts that came to me while driving with the top down, no hat or scarf while trying to eat a protein bar.

Minus 54lbs and Hovering

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

When I say it I still can’t believe it. Nearly one third of me is gone. I’ve already reached the weight goal I set for the end of May. I really didn’t understand building muscle vs. bodyfat when I set the goal so when I go up again with muscle weight I won’t mind. I haven’t taken new photos for a while and will probably do it sometime next week since I have lost another six pounds since the last progress pic. I am starting to see some ab definition at the top. I have just a touch of fat left around my navel to loose and my thighs have never looked this good.

Weight 164 down to 110.
Chest 38 to a 34
Waist 30 to a 26
Hips 40 to a 34
And oddly shoe size from 6 1/2 to 5 1/2
Ring size is back to a 3 1/2

All this just makes me want to work all that harder to reach my goal.

Separate Vacations?

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

Just curious to see who else takes separate vacations from their spouse. Right now my hubby is doing what he loves most….fishing….in the Florida Keys with his brother.
We have taken separate vacations for years. His usually involves fishing and sleeping while mine usually involves going someplace interesting. We have tried to do week long vacations together which usually involves me doing what he wants to do. He did go skiing with me once. I give him credit he tried one whole day before giving up.
Last year he did all fishing trips and I went to Scotland, England, and the Netherlands. I’m not sure what I am going to do this year since I skipped skiing in February. I am thinking somewhere with a beach in May for the first week of my vacation. (I have three).
You are probably wondering why I wouldn’t want to go the the Keys. I love the Keys. He fishes off Marathon but stays in sort of "seedy" places his brother picks out. This year they are in the same place as last year. It has bugs. I just can’t do bugs. Plus, I don’t think he would be too keen on me going to Key West by myself.

OH MY GOD! Look at You!

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

I heard these words over and over again on Sunday. I have already said that I am always cold. Therefore, I tend to wear jackets and sweaters most of the time hiding my even better shape and fitness. Last Saturday on a quest to find some cute sandals I found a cute little cropped hoodie jacket. I decided to wear it to church the next morning with jeans and a tank. This outfit made me look just great I have to admit. So trim (no muffin tops here Bammernhell) and slim.
The compliments started immediately. "Look how thin you are! Wow, you’ve really lost weight! Have you been working out?" Then I went to serve coffee at the welcome center and took off the hoodie because I didn’t want coffee stains on the cuffs thus revealing my arms. "OH MY GOD! Look at you! Look at your arms! Look at the muscles!"
My husband stood by arms crossed and listened. As said in early posts his support has dwindled and crossed over to near sabaotage (but that is for another post).
Needless to say it made my weekend and even my week. Now that it is finally getting warmer I will be able to show off a little more of my hard work.
