A Tick, A Perve, and A Spa

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

I have been doing my best to eat the amount I should beginning with breakfast. That is the hardest part. I seem to do okay with yogurt and a protein bar. The bagel with peanut butter was good but found you can’t walk around eating it. I had to change my shirt after dripping warm peanut butter on it. ( I had toasted the bagel.) Today I tried a protein shake made with whey, creatine, glutamine, ff milk, ice, 1/2 banana and strawberry puree. It was very tasty but by the time I finished it I felt like a tick ready to pop.

I thought our gym here at work was relatively perve free. I was wrong. This guy came into the weight room about halfway through my workout. In 45 minutes he did the chest press a few times, fondled a few dumbbells, and did the lateral press a couple of times. Most of the time he just walked around. He followed me to the cardio room and got on a treadmill. If I said an old man in a walker could have passed his pace I wouldn’t be joking. I talked to a few of the ladies who come in after work and they said he is a regular around 6:30 most days. He just pretends to work out. Mostly he just stairs. Ewww.

On a lighter side I have been doing some side IT stuff for a plastic surgeon’s office. Instead of cash I told them to pay me in equivalent gift certificates. They have a gorgeous day spa at the facility so I am set for facials and massages for many months to come.

One Small Step

Monday, January 28th, 2008

I bought a scale yesterday no so much for myself but for my husband. At this time he doesn’t workout at all. I haven’t pushed or nagged but did get him to come and spot me last week. He stepped on the scale this morning and was very happy. He was down from 250 to 234 just because of the food he has been eating. (Collateral damage from the way I cook now). I guess that was the motivator. He picked up an application for the gym today. Now, it may take him a couple of weeks to fill it out and turn it in but it is a step in the right direction.

Best Week Ever!

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

First, I am just starting to see Ab definition. The lines on the sides are there the line down the middle is lightly defined.
Second, I checked my bodyfat % and it is down from 20% to 17% in two weeks.
Third, no more cholesterol medicine!
Fourth, I wore leggings and turtleneck to dinner last night and looked great.

Saturday Eye Candy for Melanie

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

I headed out to the gym this morning as usual. I try to time it so I am doing my thirty minutes of cardio at the end while Carter Can is on HGTV. I have yet to actually listen to the program. I just watch it for the eye candy value of Carter Oosterhouse. Today I had just turned on the tv and turned down the sound when a friend came in to work out.
What’s on?
Carter Can. HGTV.
What’s wrong with the sound.
Nothing. You don’t need sound. Just watch and enjoy.
Oh my God!
See…no sound needed. Wait until he smiles….or laughs…sigh..

To Whey or not to Whey

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Like any good geek I research the hell out of supplements before I bought my first this week. On Tuesday I tried a pre-workout shake and felt terrible and icky the rest of the evening…I tried a different approach today. First, it was going to be last …post workout. Second I needed it to taste better. I solved that with a blender, ice, fat-free milk and some banana/pineapple smoothie puree (just a splash). I added the whey, creatine, and glutamine and ended up with a great protein smoothie. It also provide the recommended carbs needed post workout.

Lemon Decadence

Friday, January 25th, 2008

We had a nine o’clock closing on the re-fi on our house. The loan officer gave us a gift basket filled with candy and sweets. I thanked her then she started telling I should try this and that. My husband smiled and said she won’t eat any of it but I will.
But you are tiny! she looked shocked.
For the first time out loud I said…I am into bodybuilding now. I can’t eat stuff like this if I want to meet my goal but you made him very happy.
She’s been like this for a couple of months my husband said with a shrug.
By the time the papers had been signed my husband was eating Lemon Decadence cookies with a smile on his face.

Tortured by a Pregnant Woman

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

My trainer who is six months pregnant tortured me tonight. I discovered just how many ways to do lunges and crunches. By the time the hour was over my legs were shaking and the flight of stairs to the main part of the gym seemed like Everest. When I walked towards the cardio room she seemed stunned. "You are doing cardio?"
"Just twenty minutes," I said.
It took about five minutes on the elliptical for my legs to regroup then I got in the groove and finished my twenty minutes (believe me when I say I didn’t set any speed records). Headed up to my office to grab all my stuff and then back down to the car.
I can honestly say I am getting my money’s worth.

Good News…Bad News

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

I saw the doctor today after last weeks blood test. First of all, she was stunned at the weight loss. I told her how I did it and what lifestyle I was leading now including the diet. I told her I had stopped taking Zetia in November and wanted to see what my cholesterol was now without it. The bad news was it was up from 175 (with Zetia) to 210 (without but down from 230+ before going on Zetia three years ago). My HDL was 59 which is great, my LDL was 136 which is borderline, and my triglycerides were 74 (down from 165 pre-Zetia).  The good news is no more Zetia. She thinks the LDL will continue to go down through diet alone. I get tested again in three months…Whoo hooo!

Hump Day Blues

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

I hate Wednesdays…I have to work late and I just don’t have time to workout other than cardio. Today is also "gang lunch day" where we all go out to eat. I was hoping it wasn’t going to be Mexican like last week. I had already decided to gracefully decline if that was the destination. Luckily, another co-worker who is only 25 and is on a strict diet for hypertension asked for Ruby Tuesdays. I love their turkey burgers so I was excited. I also had the mashed cauliflower instead of fries which illicited a few ewws and yucks and then morphed into a conversation that I was becoming "high maintenance" due to my eating habits.

The same people who work out 2-3 times a week for twenty minutes on the treadmill and wonder why they can’t lose weight. DOH!

Uncomfortable Feeling

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

I had a good workout following the protein shake with glutamine. I upped the weight on nearly every exercise and still had energy to do 45 minutes of cardio…About thirty minutes later I felt bloated and uncomfortable. No pain but just icky. Needless to say I passed on the post workout shake. Once I ate dinner I felt a hundred percent better.

Oh as a follow up to the post this morning. I got my husband into the gym by asking him to spot me. He stayed long enough to help then asked a few questions about the machines then left…maybe there is hope…
