DAMN! So close…

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Made probably my proudest gym failure ever today- I just missed 605 on the dead lift today. That would have been a huge pr and would have broken one of my biggest lifting goals. But I can taste it now… I had it to my knees (twice) but just couldn’t quite break the stinking sticking point. Oh well I am really pretty stoked. I will have it soon!

JUst an update

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Haven’t been blogging much of late- dunno just haven’t had the time or energy. Things have been pretty decent still. The economy sucks, my girlfriend and I are somewhere far in between together and not and its the "holidays." But thats the thing, its just life, a strange juxtaposition between good and bad in which we just have to figure out how to feel good about ourselves. And I do. I am happy. Training is kicking ass, I have some of the best friends the world has to offer, a dad who is always there for me and even God always seems to be hookin a brotha up ;) This year I guess I finally figured out how to balance the good and bad, to feel both and be fine with that- I think I’ve always absolutely avoided the painful parts before, now I know they have to be there and I am fine with that. There is way to much good to worry about it. Well that was a bit more junk than I intended…all I meant to say is "ugh, weights good. happy holidays!" So yeah, on that note… Happy Holidays everyone!

Post Show Report

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Well the Excalibur was a relative success for me. Compared to my first experience there I did much better, up a whole weight class and I placed 7th instead of 9th. So progress is good. Of course I have my complaints about the judging and the placings of Cody and myself, but the point is I just need to keep getting better. If I just get good enough there will be no other option than placing better. It was a huge show though and two of the guys in my class have (or had) big sponsorships- Muscle Asylum and MuscleTech guys they were- so if I’m hanging in the top ten with them that is cool.

I must complain about the show logistics though. The show was very poorly managed. I wasn’t even through with registration and the show was already more than an hour behind schedual. It can be really annoying actually because it really f*cks the competitors up. I mean can’t they keep shit together? I’ve been a competitior in countless national and world class track meets and they run like clockwork- with 5 times the number of athletes and events! John Lindsay’s shows are supposed to be the best in the west and out of the three I’ve been in so far everyone has been a cluster f*ck wth unhappy athletes and incompetant help. I mean three of the heavyweights almost missed posing in the nightshow because the pump room help didn’t call them (or called the wrong numbers!)… that turned into posing routines with no pump time. Sh*tty. During the prejudging the judges forgot to bring out an athlete at one point so all of us heavyweights wound up having to hold a front double biceps for 2 minutes! while they figured it out. As soon as they did, they brought the dude out and started our mandatories over again. Basically every five seconds people that were supposed to know what they were doing were f*cking up and it felt like they were doing it out of apathy. Glad I dropped like 500 bucks on the event.

Anyway with that said I’m back to training for the next (not gonna stop till I win!) and can’t be stopped! Lol. Hope you all have a great day and train hard!

An answer to a newbie…

Friday, December 5th, 2008

…lifter that I  figured I would reprint here, hey maybe it can help other people too. Basically he asked me how to put on muscle and this was the most succinct way I could put it:

So basically you want to get bigger so that you are taken more seriously at work? Good reason. In your case even being a hard gainer (I consider myself one even) you do not need supplements to start- I think supplements are more important for people who have been training longer, more bang for your buck in a sense since experienced gains come so hard anyway.. You want muscle so you need food. Lots of food. High protein high carbohydrate and moderate fat (40% 40% 20% for example) is awesome. Make sure your carbs are from whole grain sources, fruits and vegatables. The only sugar (high glycemic carbs) you should be eating should either be around workout times- this is preferable, or in the mornings. This keeps you leaner. The slow carbs (whole grain) are less likely to put on fat. Your protein source that is best to put on mass is beef, but since your name is Deepak, there is a chance you can’t eat it; pork chicken, fish and whatever other leans meats you can lay your hands will work just fine. Depending on your metabolism you will need to consume 500-1000 calories over your maintenance needs per day to put on substansial mass. If you are going to use any one supplement as a pure beginner I would use a whey protein supplement. My favorites are Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard - my standby for about 8 years, BSN Syntha6 (kind high in carbs but oh so tasty) and Syntrax Nectar which has awesome taste and only a gram of carbs. A scoop of one of those taken around workouts will help anyone. Lift heavy and if you can lift longer than 45 minutes on any given bodypart you aren’t working hard enough. Sleep 8-9 hours a day if possible. No less than six. You’ll grow bro.

Just a quick one

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Don’t really have time to write much right now, but I had a ok weekend, lots of rest and good prep for this week. Started decarbing today so no more carbs (save those incidental ones that you just can’t do anything about- 20-30g ya know) until postworkout Thursday. I trained my upper body "push" muscles today and did a total of about 80 minutes of cardio. Tomorrow- more cardio and legs with Wednesday being the "pull" muscles of the upper body. No super big lifts or anything, just higher overall volume to burn up more glycogen….Also been reading that higher volume (compared to higher intensity) can lead to more glycogen retention- so that is also the carb up plan. Friday will pretty much be a couple  (2-3) high volume sessions (which added up will be full body) which will hopefully make me a carb sponge. Well that’s pretty much the plan for the week..less than six days!…
