Okay here is my last go at this too. Its been fun but the topic is nearly exhausted. I’m kinda tired too, long but good day.
To start there was one guy that commented about me being uptight and that I should live and let live. I’m not trying to change Maddi’s mind, I’m having a debate for the sake of having a debate, its fun. I want monogamy, she is deciding- for a lack of a better way to put it. Good ground to stomp around on. I also knew by reading a fraction of Maddi’s stuff that she would respond and make it worthwhile, if you read her blog for more than a sentence you can see some some damn good brains and some tenacity there.
I don’t have any problem with people making the choices they make, it is their life but the fact that I may not agree with does make for good discussion material. I mean really I consider myself pro-choice sort of guy, I may not make that choice but everybody should have the choice to live as the wish to live. Finding out why people live like they live makes it all worthwhile anyway in a lot of cases.
Ok…
In my view morality is only supposed to reign in some of those choices to ensure that as few people as possible are hurt. Thats what living a moral life is; its not hurting people. I mean morality shifts so much among people that not hurting people is the only way I can sum it up. Thats why I can’t say Maddi is morally wrong for her thinking, it may work. I just know that it wouldn’t work for me, and many others. It wouldn’t be okay, those urges, they would hurt. It would be immoral.
Maddi’s opinion of morality is also still based on the Bible and mine isn’t really. Mine is what I said in the last paragraph, not causing people pain. Yeah a lot of the ideas that I have about how to accomplish that come from Judeo-Christian thought, but really when you look at any religion (RELIGION, not CULT) they all pretty much run along the same lines. Don’t steal, kill, covet etc. Be nice and love your fellow human. There are obviously differences but really be it Buddist, Muslim, Christian (these aren’t the only ones, just the biggest)- pretty much the same bottom line concerning how to treat people. Of course humans go and f**k all of that up because somebody has to be right. There are extremists, my God is better than yours kind of thing (well the Buddists don’t do that they just chill) and people who twist the word for their own gain (LOTS OF THOSE, I hate evangelical television by the way). When it comes down to it though I think its the same God reaching out to different people, Christ taught me God is there, but Mohammad may just as well have taught Kareem that God was there too.
Thats why I don’t debate from a religious standpoint, you all probably think I’m some heretical nut. But thats the thing, when I look around the world the Bible doesn’t work. The system is broken. The Bible, as was hit on several times, has been translated time and time again. Books have been dropped. One group only believes in one half, another both. Then there is that other group that thinks there is a third part. People wrote the book, God didn’t. Its a great history book though, except that third part.
There are also lots of salvagable ideals in the Bible though; things that will help humanity continue to exist. The Bible can also deliver insight, so I do believe God is there. I just try and take the ideas that are left beyond the human corruption (the ones that every religion shares) and mesh them with my own moral compass and make my way in the dark.
More directly to Maddi’s last post, yes we are far far beyond animals. Yes we are less human if we succumb to base desires. But as humans we can have a few hypocricies that we revel in. If we didn’t we wouldn’t be human, we would be perfect. We just need to ride the crest more towards the perfect side concerning human interactions to protect the sanctity of human life. What I said in my previous posts is simply an outline of how I intend to try and do it, not a blueprint for anyone else, although I would be a bit of a b**ch after all of this if I didn’t say that I thought I was right (pride may be one of my hypocricies lol).
Finally…Yes I think sex is great. But I know sex is better with someone you love.
Anyway thanks for the time and back to training.

This sucks. I already wrote this post once and due to pilot error I lost it. Luckily I have a little black box in my head and I should be able to reconstruct what I already tried to say.
Primal urges? Yes, we do definitely still have them. No matter what we do we will always have some innate subconcious instinct tugging at us to do something. We shouldn’t succumb to these urges however, because when we do we lose our humanity. The only time primal urges are truly useful are in survival situations. and even then they are dangerous.
I’m not even going to approach this from a religious level, because that has no bearing here. I can’t do that even, because my own faith isn’t even strong enough to justifiably use it as backing, I’ll get to that later. Here, I’m going to use practicality and rationality.
You mentioned how much sex and violence there is in the media. Yes the viewer that watches the programing demonstrates a person’s will to satiate those primal urges, but the fact that it is even on demonstrates the dangerous consequences of people succumbing to their instincts. The more people watch that stuff the more desensitized they become to it and the easier it becomes to show it to us. So of course it will continue to grow. The media even uses science to try and fine tune the delivery of the material to people so it almost forces them to watch it. It is a slippery slope that the industry takes advantage of in order to make more money. You can take the same kind of thinking even farther however.
Every tyrant or dictator that ever lived manipulated people, tested them against their own primal urges and gained massive amounts of power and wealth. People aren’t easy to control but when they are too concerned with and consumed by base desires and instinctual urges they become sheep. Those people are acting like animals and therefore are allowing themselves to be controlled as such. That is how Hitler’s propaganda against the Jews worked. It hit the German people in the heart, made them jealous and hateful because the Jews were shown as having what the German people wanted, money and jobs. Why? Because money and jobs equate to survival in modern times and when a person is doing nothng but trying to survive they act like an animal. We all know the rest of the story there, major consequences, 12 million of them, not including the other 30 million or so that died in the war that raged around the Holocaust.
Even supposedly good institutions (capitalism, various other governments, etc) use the same sort of tactics. Really it is greedy men preying on the populace.
Obviously an open relationship is nowhere near that magnitude, but there are still consequences. Consequences. That is my aversion to an open relationship. Not right or wrong neccessarily, but the reality of consequences. Those same primal urges that a couple tries to satiate by bringing another partner in are the ones that are going to hurt that couple too. You just have to ask your self if the extra ten fingers and additional gender specific equipment is worth it. Even in a relationship that is okay with sex being non-exclusive, the same urges that often turn in to pleasure, will someday result in jealousy or anger and that could potentially destroy the relationship that was intended to be enhanced.
See its not even morality that guides my opinion on the subject. It is being pragmatic. Is instant gratification really worth it? I mean that is generally what happens when someone submits to their basal self. I realize too, that instant gratification has become an American standby of sorts as well (and that relates to the media/control slippery slope) but when was anything instant really that good anyway? The better things in life come from staying strong and sticking to your guns, not submitting to a lesser self.
Before I go I will touch on my religious background real quick because I did bring that up earlier. I was raised Christian, in a Methodist church, and still consider myself Christian if only through the fact that Christ was how I initially found God. I have been having issues with my faith for quite some time now though. Anyway if you want a better idea of where I am at there, check out my first post at ramblinlandry.blogspot.com. There you can at least get a glimpse because I’m not going to go into it too much here. I am still going to try and use this primarily for training
Well that wasn’t exactly like before, but close enough.

Legs are evil. They make Bert sick to his stomach and make it hard to eat after working out. I like doing legs because it is hella fun to move big weights, but the aftermath… Oh well got through them and now I’m gonna force down a triple cheeseburger. MMMMMM.

Meeting people in a fitness setting really is an interesting way to meet people. I train in a small gym in a small town and when you are there enough you get to know the group that is there. Its like Cheers in a gym. You go in there say, every seven thiry in the evening and so does Jay, Ronnie, Marcus, Dex and Monica. You bs with them every so often an eventually get to know them well. But you might not actually know their last name (or sometimes you only know their last), you might not know what they do or what they look like in normal clothes. When you do finally see them in normal clothes your like "what the …oh Hey Joe." Kinda freaks you out the first time with some people. Regardless of what you don’t know about eachother you seem to be the best of friends around the gym. Lifting breeds comraderie it seems, pretty cool.
Talking to people on this site is an experience too. I really am entertained by it. You know, if I hit on somebody or give advice or take advice, whatever it is I do, I do it in a speedo on this site. Pretty damn funny to me. I mean where the hell do you hit on a girl while wearing a speedo in real life? Hell if I know. Can you imagine the scene in a bar? "Hey baby, can I buy you a drink… Like my posing trunks? They’re Prada…" followed closely by a scream and a score of bouncers hurling my nearly naked ass out of the bar. It just wouldn’t work. But here, its expected. Awesome. Well thats about it from me for now, have a nice night.
