My 1st Half-Ironman is getting close!
I been wanting to compete or complete my first Half-Ironman triathlon for some time now. And finally I say, what the hell, and signed up for the Musselman Triathlon in up sate NY. It’s coming up fast (July 13, 2008) and I don’t no if I’m even close to being ready. My training is going ok but my swimming, well let’s just say I swim like a BRICK. I been riding and running but not so much in the same day, so I may have to wing it when the time comes. And even tho the creek is still cold as HELL I may have to suffer and see where I stand. Anyway, any training advice is welcome for this?

Get yourself a good tri-specific wetsuit. It’ll help you float better and cut your swim time drastically. I suggest the De Soto 2-piece. Get it ASAP and practice swimming in it and getting in and out of it. The swim will never make your race but it can definitely break it. Get your wetsuit and start doing open water swims; not for the sake of going fast but being comfortable. The swim is such a small portion of the race but if not done properly, I will destroy you. These suits aren’t cheap but if you plan on doing more tri’s in the future, they are a priceless tool. I’d be happy to help you out. I’ve done my share of races and am currently a USAT coach. I just look like shit because Physical Therapy School’s kicking my ass!!! (gained 20 lbs. in one semester)
