Golds in Venice is always full of many of the sports top pros anytime your there.  However, if you ask around many of these pros are here to train or just on holiday from Australia.  Today was no except when i saw a photo shoot being done by Jerry Freddick of Ironman magazine.  Jerry stop be and introduced me to the sexy beautiful IFBB Firgure Pro Arina Manta.  Arina told me she was here in the US for a few photo shoots and then will be working the Expo at the Arnold.  Arina hasn’t made a decision on what show but said she will compete sometime this year in 2009.  Before she ever became involved in Fitness Arina was a Professional Springboarder and diver for her home country of Romania.  That is somewhat like the story of ex german swimmer turn bodybuilder Armin Scholz.  If you see Arina at the Arnold and say hello as this top pro is very down to earth and friendly

Moe El Moussawi stops by Golds with his brother.

While training last night at Golds I saw Abbas who is the owner of Pro Fight Supplements and diet expert to many of the top pros including his brother from New Zealand Moe El Moussawai. Moe was training when we approached him but was still very friendly and easygoing when we interupped his workout.  Moe keeps looking better with each contest with taking second at the Ironman a few months back.  Im sure if he keeps his pace victory is within his fingertips.

I ran into my good friend Julien Greaux Muay Thai fighter who many of you might know from BSN as Julien has been with the company for about 3 years now.  Julien signed a movie deal for an action movie and is awaiting filming within the next few months in Cananda.  When I saw Julien he had the new Fitness Rx magazine where he was the cover model.  Inside has a big coverage of Julian who is ripped more than most top bodybuilders.  Can’t wait to see you on the big screen Julien

My friend Dave who is one of the cast on the new reality show superbodies has been training with his good friend who is also from Austria like Dave, in fact he is Mr Austria.  Toni Breznik came a few months ago from Austria to stay with Dave so he could focus on training at Golds Venice in hopes of earning his pro card.  Toni who use to be a pro hocky player switched over to bodybuilding and has done very well since stepping on stage. Since the past year when Toni was here he has added about 15 pounds and improved his English, which Im sure will help his career.

ernie.JPG

My good friend and ex-training partner Mongo Chang is setting his sites this July on winning the Hawaiian Islands then going on to the USA.  If Mongo goes to the USA he will be the first national superheavyweight Asian competior.  Mongo is training with IFBB Pro Mike Dragna is is weighing about 280lb at this time.  Mongo teamed with with Genr8 and Vitargo, along with many trips to the mecca Golds Venice for some training with myself and a few of the top pros.  The past 10 years Ernie Mongo Chang has been a Hawaii Police officer where he first started competing in strongman contest.  When his weight got up to 300lb Ernie thought he needed a change so he switched over to bodybuilding.  Starting out strong Mongo won his first contest and did a respectable 2 at his second contest.  To top it off he was awarded best poser at both contest.  If you have time stop by the Genr8 booth at the Arnold and say hello to Mongo and myself.

Is Brandon Curry making Hawaii his home?

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

It seems that new IFBB Pro Brandon Curry is being seen more on the beautiful island of Oahu.  Brandon’s good friend and national competior Ernie Mongo Chang told me that Brandon is there alot but only to visit.  The truth be told Brandon is moving to San Diego but loves to visit Hawaii ever chance he has.  Brandon was married last year to beautiful local Brandy who most people know from Muscle and Fitness.  Brandy family all still live in Hawaii so they try to come visit as much as possible Mongo said.

This coming July Hawaii will host the Mr. Hawaiian Islands Bodybuilding contest where Brando will guest pose.  This show in the past was put on by Arnold and Mitz of Hawaii but Mitzs wife passed away this year so Gunter is the new promotor.  Now the show will be put on both both Germans Arnold and Gunter.  We still havn’t firgured if Gunter wanted to start putting on contest or if was just a favor for the Gov. of Ca Arnold.

Former Boxing Champ Rahman Headed to MMA

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Donlon

By: Jason Probst, Sherdog.com

Former boxing heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman is coming to MMA sometime this year, according to the fighter’s agent.

Rahman, who knocked out Lennox Lewis in 2001 to win the linear heavyweight title, has his heart set on a mixed marital arts career, said Sandro Gelke, who represents him. Now living in Las Vegas, Rahman, 45-7 (36 KO), is coming off a one-sided, Dec. 13 seventh-round stoppage at the hands of IBF/WBO champ Wladimir Klitschko.

In news sure to perk up the ears of both boxing and MMA fans alike, “The Rock,” whose boxing career was defined by some of the strangest twists of fate this side of Riddick Bowe, wants to step into the new sport. And fast.

Gelke said that the 36-year-old Rahman is “quite serious about fighting in MMA” and they are currently in negotiations with several promotions, hoping to line up a debut fight sometime in the next 2-3 months. The ex-champ — whose boxing career went south after losing a rematch to Lennox Lewis — built a reputation on a big right hand in the sweet science, though he was also inconsistent and at times seemed to lack the impetus to get in shape.

“He thought it would be an interesting thing. He’s seen Kimbo Slice fight on TV, and he’s like, ‘I’d like to fight some of these guys,’” said Gelke.

Rahman was not initially available for comment.

Rahman, who has zero grappling background, last scored a takedown while scuffling with Lewis on the ESPN set while promoting their November 2001 rematch. Gelke said that his client plans to keep his boxing career going as well, but has yet to locate an MMA-based gym. But they’re looking around, he added.

“He hasn’t wrestled. He was actually quite a streetfighter (in Baltimore) so people said he should box,” Gelke said of Rahman, who took up boxing at the relatively late age of 20. “He’s like Quinton (Jackson) and Kimbo in that sense. We’re talking to quite a few different organizations, from small promotions up to the big ones. We’re looking to fight name fighters like Kimbo, Butterbean [Eric Esch], James Thompson, someone to bring a name to the table.”

There’s no long-term plan in place, Gelke added, as Rahman gets his feet wet in MMA — they’re not making noise about challenging the top dogs just yet.

“We’re just taking it one fight at a time and see what comes to us,” he said. “We want to get a few smaller fights under our belts before we take on a Lesnar or Fedor or someone like that. There’s nothing solid right now. But we’re already talking with promoters about shows in April or May.”

Gelke said that he knows how vexing the transition will be given the added combative aspects of MMA. Other boxers such as Butterbean and Ray Mercer found out the hard way, along with a spate of early-day MMA competitors; but those were far less accomplished boxers than Rahman. The question long-asked by fans of both sports could get at least a quasi-relevant answer with Rahman’s journey that those other entries never really supplied — what would happen if a world-class boxer with MMA training entered the sport? Shannon Briggs’ flirtation with it never materialized, but the reports out of American Top Team were certainly encouraging. It’s still a question that elicits heated debate from virtually any combat sports fan you ask.

“I understand how difficult it is,” Gelke said. “That’s why I’m looking to not put him in with any big grapplers at first. I don’t think Rock really understands how hard it will be to fight these guys with a grappling and wrestling background. So I’m looking to put him in with someone like Tank Abbott, or James Thompson.”

Rahman’s weight fluctuated greatly during the latter half of his boxing career. Best suited in the mid 230-pound range, he ballooned up in the 250s during a tour of tune-ups in recent years, and was a lackluster 253.5 prior to being dismantled by Klitschko in December.

“I’m talking to a Strikeforce, [a] lot of big promotions,” he said. “Some in Japan, like Sengoku and Dream. Hasim would love to fight over in Japan. Also some smaller promotions, like Wargods. I’m trying to get him into an MMA gym, work with some top trainers, there are some great gyms out here in Vegas. So that’s still kind of a work in progress. I think he’s waiting to see that I have a fight set. Then he can focus on training.”

Along with Marcus Davis, Chris Lytle is one of the most accomplished MMA fighters with a pro boxing career under his belt, going 13-7-1 (7 KO) in the squared circle. Better known in MMA as a UFC regular, Lytle gave his take on what Rahman will face.

Gold’s Venice busy with competiors training for San Diego contest

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

jpt62001

006.JPG

Either you have all the top pro’s training for the Arnold or many others also training for the GNC Bodybuilding contest March 21.  One person who comes to my mind that has made big improvments this year is Adam Strachman who use to work at the local Max Muscle but not works under Abbas the owner of Pro Fight supplements.  Adam has a degree and nutrition and works with a lot of competiors on diet. I saw Adam last week which was 4 weeks out from the show and he’s ripped, harder than before any of the shows he has competed in over the last 10 years.  Keep an eye on this 26 year old!

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

jpt62001

Ed Conniers who most upcoming bodybuilders in Ca know was the past owner of Golds gym here in Venice.  Alot of new pro bodybuilders know Ed because of his help and love of the support.  Ed has been helping upcoming bodybuilders with finding a place to stay a car and jsut helping to get on their feet when first coming here to Venice.  This goes back to the 90’s when Tonya Knight was a pro bodybuilder.  Ed sold Golds a few years back and moved to Palm Springs.  When I saw his the other day he said just a few months earlier he was having some heart problems so he went to a weel known hospital in NB and had surgery.  Ed looked liked he was in good health and we wish himk a well recovery

Branch Warren visits Gold’s Venice 2 weeks out from contest

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

jpt62001

0072.JPG

With only two weeks from the Arnold Both Johnnie Jackson and Branch Warren were at Golds.  Branch was walking around in street clothes and without a tan.  We started talking since I knew Branch from his visits to Hawaii and he said he wanted to get home with the show coming up it was hard to travel this close but was here to do a shoot.  When he changed o his workout clothes he was looking very thick and hard.  If he gets a little tighter he should do well at the Arnold.
