While the NPC Nationals is a great or should I say the best armature contest in the USA with a great number of upcoming future Pros it also draws many top Pros coming to watch the event. 2010 was no exception with Ms. Olympia figure competitor Tanji Johnson, IFBB Women's Pro bodybuilder Krissy Murrel, Men's Dennis James, Tony Freedman, Brandon Curry and Flew Lewis, along with many more.
Brandon Curry and Flex made the drive out from their home state of Tennessee to catch the event. Having just seen both of them at the Olympia I was very impressed seeing Flex again as he looked both a little thicker and leaner then he was at the Olympia. After taking some time to talk with my good friend and a person I hold great respect for, Flex shared that he's now gearing up for his day on stage in 2011. Flex also stated that " In the past I've came in too low in weight, but this year I will weight in right on the 202 and fill out another 15 pounds or so." I think we all will be impressed with the new site of Flex Lewis.
Yesterday was my off day but I stopped by the Mecca, Golds Venice to plan out my training with The Master Charles Glass when I was lucky enough to run into a few Large Pros. Ben Pakulski was there finishing up with some heavy trap work. But then across the room I saw a sight you don't catch that often. Two top Pro Ifbb Pro Women training together.
My long time friend Cathy LeFrancious was looking like she had put on more muscle since the Olympia in Vegas and spotting her was the Ms. Olympia Iris Kyle. This was my first chance meeting Iris who was still in great shape with her incredible shape she is known for. Iris said she will be here in Venice training till Nov. I was very impressed at how humble and down to earth Iris was when we spoke. Maybe next time I can get her to get me some pointers on her diamond shape calves!
On Sunday, October 10, 2010, extraordinary fitness and arts photographer Weiferd Watts collapsed & passed away.
In an industry filled with delicate self-esteems, Weiferd was a bright soul. Weiferd had a knack for capturing the spirit and beauty of physiques. He had a knack for winning people and putting them at ease.
Weiferd was an unusually gifted photographer with an eye for color, angles, and depth in his photography. He had a kind heart, a big smile, and a creative soul.

UPDATE: The following tribute is from his memorial service:
Photographer Weiferd Watts September 26, 1956 – October 10, 2010
Weiferd Watts was born in San Francisco on September 26, 1956 to the union of Julius and Martha Watts. He was the third of six children. His early years were spent growing up in Berkeley, CA and it was during that time he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. His family moved to Oakland CA in 1970 where Weiferd attended Fremont High School and graduated in 1974.
Throughout his childhood Weiferd displayed great artistic ability, which led to his attending the California School of Arts and Crafts. In time he adopted the hobby of taking snapshots and that hobby developed into a passion which grew and grew and grew. In order to increase his knowledge and enhance his photography skills, Weiferd began attending San Francisco City College. His devotion to his craft served him well. Weiferd eventually established a special association with the ballet / dance community as well as the bodybuilding community. Weiferd’s expertise in those fields made him well sought-after.
For nearly 30 years, Weiferd worked in the banking industry. He was employed by Bank of California for a number of years and then he worked for Union Bank for 18 years.
Weiferd had a real zest for living and did not limit himself from experiencing the things that sparked his interest. He loved traveling and meeting people. He enjoyed most sports, particularly tennis, baseball (Go Giants!) football (Go 49ers!) basketball and bicycling. He had a great sense of humor. He loved to laugh and make other s laugh as well. He always looked forward to the family gatherings at Thanksgiving, Christmas and other Holidays. Those were very special times for him because he got to spend it with his nieces and nephews who he cherished dearly. He was a loving son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, neighbor, co-worker and friend.
Weiferd was a bachelor throughout his live and leaves behind no children. He leaves to mourn his passing 2 sisters; Theresa Greer an Tonette Watts of Oakland, 1 brother Marcus Watts of Stockton; 4 nephews, 4 nieces, 1 great-niece, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Weiferd was preceded in death by his parents Julius and Martha Watts and sisters Juliette Williams and Oretta Watts. His kind and gentle spirit will be truly missed.
The 2011 Olympia Expo brought in a large amount of visitors from all over. It seemed with ever big company they had Pro bodybuilders, figure and bikini athletes working the booths, or just there making appearances. Some coming as far as Europe and even IFBB Pro Joe Stubbs from the Bahamas turned up.
Walking around you couldn't help but notice the long lines at some booths to meet the Pros.along with a chance to get some free samples. Silvio was back on the scene at the bodybuilding.com booth and informed me that he will be back on stage at the beginning of 2011.
Kris Gethin of bodybuilding.com seemed to made rounds to ever booth at the expo along with attending most events. Does this guy ever get to sleep I wonder?
Just a few weeks ago Stan McQuay walked away with 1st place at the Detroit Pro 202 class. If you saw Stan in clothes on the street you might just think he was a guy who trains a lot, however once Stan comes out on stage your bound to be impressed. This guy has great shape and great proportions which makes him appear much larger.
Stan has teamed up with the Master trainer Charles Glass in hopes to pack on some more solid mass and it seems to be working for him. Stan who always seems to be calm even while dieting has now became a regular sit here at Golds Venice but you still cant stop to look sometimes with his detail and focus he puts in while training. Stan competed in the 202 Olympia this year where he told 7th but I'm sure we'll be seeing much more coming from this rising star.
If your checking out the 202 Mr. Olympia then a new face that you'll want to watch is Bola Ojex. Bola was able to qualify for the Olympia from the Phoenix show earlier this year.
Bola who is 5'7 said he will step on stage at 200lb this show, and at 28 years old he has plenty of time to grow in the sport. Bola always displays great symmetry where at 200lb he has a 28 inch waist with 19 3/4 arms in contest condition. Bola had won the 2003 British amateur Grand Pr ix Championship to earn his Pro card and is now living here in Rancho Cucamonga, Ca where he operates his own personal training business. Best of luck at the Olympia Bola!
I was lucky enough to run into Big Ben Pakulski at Golds Venice where he was telling Jerome Ferguson that come 2011 he will be doing the new Pro show to be held here in Los Angeles, where he plans to hit the stage in the 280's.
Ben has been looking very thick since he made the move to Cali, not that he was ever small to any standards before. Ben is living about 45 minutes from Golds Venice but manages to train here quite often. If your around Golds you might want to check Ben out if he's training as this Beast is very hardcore using some heavy poundage with a lot of basic exercises.

It seems IFBB Pro Bodybuilder Pauliina Talus is looking like she might be training for another Pro contest soon. Pauliina who moved to California from Finland is a regular site at Golds Venice, however she is a very impressive sight to watch train.
I remember walking into see Pauliina training legs back in 2005 and she was doing machine squats with 5 45's per side, I was glad I had on long sweats that day! Pauliina has always been a very positive woman to talk to and she is always supporting and encouraging of her friends or fans. This past year I had noticed that she was picking up her training intensity very hard and the effort sure showed. So after asking Pauliina if she was training for anything she said " I am really enjoying my training now and also working with my clients so life is good and I will take it each day and decided where I want to take it." If your looking to contact Pauliina you can reach her at pauliinatalus.com I'm sure many fans hope to see her back on stage soon.
About 3 weeks ago I wrote a blog about how Hide had to widthdrawl from the IFBB Tampa contest after the prejudging due to a knee injury. While grabbing a training session at Golds Gym in Venice, I ran into Hide, who was also there training but took the time to come update me about what was going on with his injury.
It seems Hide is going all out now with his training now so he can step up on stage this year in Vegas at the 2010 Mr. Olympia. He told me after seeking medical advice, he discovered it was just a bad tendon strain and with rest and treatment he has no second thoughts about being ready for the Mr. O. I'm sure his many fans around the world will love to see this warrior back up under the stage lights!
Jerome AKA "Hollywood " Ferguson who most bodybuilding fans are familiar with from both Bodybuilding.com and now Instructionalfitness.com is walking around Golds Venice with a hugh smile on his face.
I ran into Jerome at Golds one week out before the USA's where I thought he was going to compete but to my happy surprise Jerome informed me that 2 weeks out from the 2010 Masters Nationals he changed his course and made the last minute decision to jump into the Masters Nationals. Boy was Jerome glad he did as that day he took the Super-heavyweight class and then went on to take a Pro card home that day. This sport couldn't ask for a better personal to represent bodybuilding as Jerome is full of energy and takes the time out for all his fans. Jerome told me he hasn't made his mind up on his first pro show yet as all this is still just sinking in now. Cant wait to see our new IFBB Pro represent Venice!
