Post GVT

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

I woke up around 2am and felt sick.  Guess the week or so I failed miserably on the diet finally caught up to me.  I also think I did start to plateau a bit on the old routine.  Woke up again at 7 and still wasn’t feeling well.  A couple more hours of sleep did the trick.  Besides my back, my arms hurt this morning as well!  There’s a bit of a dull ache in the chest.  I like the stimulation instead of annihilation theory of GVT.

I do think body building has gone to my head.  Especially when it invades my dreams.  I dreamed of super setting deadlifts and squats.  I’M CRAZY!  But yea….Squats/lunges, deads/leg extensions is what is prescribed, so we’ll find out later what joy that will bring.

German Volume Training

Monday, July 30th, 2007

So the last routine wasn’t followed strictly for more than about a week and a half.  It was a bit of a tweak from the previous 4 weeks of training.  No plateauing of strength happened, more of plateau of interest.  And anticipation for the next routine.  So, figuring it’s Monday, why not start now?

We took the basic routine from bb.com’s vast library of knowledge and slightly modified as we went.

Bench press 2-0-1, 5 sets x 5 reps at 70lbs
Flies, 6-0-2, 5 sets (supersetted with bench) x 5 reps at 8lbs
Incline bench press, 2-0-1, 5×5 @ 65lbs
Incline flies, 6-0-2, 5×5 @ 8lbs
Cable lat pull down, 2-0-1, 5×5 @70lbs
Seated rows, 6-0-2, 5X5 @40lbs
Barbell rows, 2-0-1, 5X5 @ 65
DB Lat. Pullovers, 6-0-2, 5X5 @20

30-45 seconds rest between supersets, rest between exercise was enough to let my fiance do his sets.  I am now very much feeling it.  I actually hit failure on the very last rep of the very last set of incline press, so that weight was absolutely perfect!  Irritating, since the weights are lighter, but still exhilarating in that it is done with fewer reps/set.  I like this style of lifting.  A lot.  Now we’ll write our own routine to this.  I’m kind of scared, because Adam (the fiance) wants me to brainstorm/write my version, he’ll write his, then we’ll combine/refine/rewrite as needed.  That’s also exciting.  I’m really taking training into my own hands instead of following like a cute puppy.

OH!

I also took a puck in the arm yesterday, blocking a shot like a good defenseman.  Hurts like crazy!  And it’s swollen, but the bruise is basically non-existent :(   I was hoping for a really purdy one lol  But it’s tender to the touch, and sore.  My hand cramped up immediately afterwards for a bit, then I finished out the game, then iced it with a cup of beer for a bit.  It works!  Anyways, that should make for some interesting lifting this evening if it gets really sore at work today.

Edit: Noticed a cool "exit wound" bruise on my brachial radialus last night in the gym.  It hurt lifting, but not bad enough to stop me from my workout.

Monday *Yawn*

Monday, July 30th, 2007

I forgot to set my alarm clock this morning.  I also forgot to turn my phone off of silent…all weekend.  Needless to say, I’m not at the gym, and have not been for the last hour like I was supposed to, so I will be going tonight.  I did sleep fairly well, except I have a cramp in my neck now.  I really should get some cardio in this morning…I could even use the fitness center here and not have to drive to the gym….Oh, but the gym got 3 new stair mills…They’re pretty…

I need to find a new hockey team.  School starts in 3 weeks and I can’t drive the 86 miles one way to Ft. Collins when school starts.  It’s good fun, but I don’t have 3.5-4 hours to kill on Sundays with homework.  I need to go to Parker’s new field house and see what they have for teams, and hopefully they’ll have a Sunday league for me.

I have a new best friend…

Friday, July 27th, 2007

…and it is called Leg Press.  Heavy and legs to 90 degrees or just barely past.  Then slap on 315 lbs.  Repeat 3 times.  If it were possible to jump for joy immediately afterwards I would have.  "Estimated 1 rep max: 314" my glutes!!!

Resisted Temptation

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

I love ice cream.  LOVE it.  Used to eat two big bowls of it a day.  Got really fat doing that and not doing anything else  lol  Anyways, it is the bane of my healthy existence.  And when sucky pharmacists offer me ice cream as a peace offering at work, I cannot resist.  Except for today.  My staff pharmacist asked me if I wanted some.  I responded with a "Yes, but I’m not going to eat any today."  She looked at me, and said "Wow…You’re being good so I will too."  That actually made me feel really good.  I even did not partake in the Oreo binge my fiance went on, blasphemously pairing Oreos with coffee instead of milk.  I’m back on track, sort of.  I just need to start cooking for the week again and get my hiney to the store for greens and sugar free flavoring syrup for my pancakes.

Ehh….lazy days

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Days off with my fiance are one thing–we get good, long sessions in at the gym.  They’re typically heavy on the weights, like yesterday.  Days off by myself are another.  Typically I can get my cardio in in the morning, but I came home and slept again lol  It’s good though.  I think my days off by myself are the best recovery days, and everyone needs some of those, right?  I’m not doing delt raises all day at work, or playing hockey so my body is resting during the day.  I’ll go lift tonight since it didn’t happen this morning.  I now have some errands to run so my cat will leave me alone, so I suppose I should tear myself away once again…Have a great afternoon!!

Why?

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Bodyspace is now officially an addiction for me.  When I’m not working out or at work, I’m typically on here.  Even when I should be sleeping.  It’s the first thing I do in the morning after turning off my alarm clock and putting my oatmeal water in the microwave to cook.  My electricity has been off and on all week, so my computer has been down :(   I take over my fiance’s computer when necessary lol  It’s sad.  Even now, I should be asleep, but I am here, blogging….  Anyways, just thought I’d share a random thought before tearing myself away for some rest before working out in roughly 6.5 hours!

Stability

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Those little inflatable disc things are sheer evil.  Ok, not really.  They’re fantastic.  Today we did a core day since we haven’t in a long while.  A LONG while.  Squats with delt raises on the disc.  Romanian deadlifts on the disc.  Frog crunches with the disc.  and some crazy compound row/shoulder press/negative delt raise thing on the disc.  Weighted crunches sucked, because I did fewer reps than I used to.  I did a few assisted pull ups, holding the last one for as long as I could.  I actually looked pretty good holding myself there with arms at 90 degrees.  I can get one on my own, but that’s about it.  I can do 2 good chin ups, help with just the last squeeze on the third, then held for as long as I could.  There was a lady on the row machine next to me who was impressed after the chin ups.  That made me feel good.  And, just to see, we did squats.  After a couple warm-up sets, we threw a couple 25s on the bar and I got 10 super good ones.  Ass to the grass as Fern would say.  We changed those to 45s to see.  I definitely need to strengthen my knees, because I got it up once I had a little bit of help for the first couple inches.  So 135 squats is my next goal.  Eventually I want a video like Melissa Detwiller’s crazy 10 rep, 315lb squat one.  Long term goals…

Back to the stability topic, though.  That disc really makes everything harder, and the intrinsic stability muscles go "Excuse you!  I’m not used to this!"  But it is good.  More days like this will be had in the future.

Ow Delts!

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Arm day after hockey.  It’s not quite as bad as leg day after hockey, but still not fun.  One of my coworkers came with us, and that was good fun!  I bumped a few things, which felt good.  One thing I bumped was my warm-up weight for my lateral delt raises.  I felt them last night until I fell asleep, and I’m still feeling them this morning!  It’s good.  It means they’re growing (finally), but they still hurt.  Work is not going to be fun today lol
