Role Models

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

My mom is my biggest hero and my biggest role model.  She has overcome so much disparity in her life and come out a strong, loving, supportive, and confident woman.  She taught my sister and I the difference between right and wrong, how to respect others, how to state our opinion without resorting to name calling and childish behavior.  She taught us to treat others with respect and dignity, even if we don’t agree with them; or even like them.  She taught us how to stand up for ourselves and speak our minds, but in a manner that allows us to walk away with our head held high.  She taught us that it is not possible to get along with all of the people, all of the time, but it is possible to conduct ourselves with honesty and integrity to all of the people, all of the time.  And I am the first to admit that I am not perfect and I don’t always behave in a way that would make my mom proud.  I have my issues, and I have my bad qualities, but I try as hard as I can to live by the values that she instilled in us. My mom also taught us the value of eating correctly and the importance of making exercise an integral part of our lives.  When I was little (maybe four) my mom took a picture of me proudly displaying my new bathing suit.  A few minutes later I came running out of my bedroom with clothes stuffed down my bathing suit and innocently proclaimed that I now looked just like her.  Of course I didn’t realize how hurtful my actions could be to my mom, and she took a picture of me like that.  Here they are:

And to this day, she has those photos framed together because according to her, that was the moment that she realized she had the power to make sure we grew up eating healthy and exercising so that we didn’t have to go through the things that she did.  I used to hate those photos, because when I would look at them I could only see that I must have really hurt my mom’s feelings.  It took me a long time to realize that my mom really is proud of those photos (and she tells us so whenever we go home to visit).

My mom spent years eating healthy and trying to lose weight.  And failing time after time and year after year.  She had diabetes, sleep apnea, breathing problems,  etc. and nothing she did seemed to help her lose weight.  A few years ago she made the difficult decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery.  And it changed her life.  She was finally able to lose weight and she had already been eating healthy and getting physical activity so the transition was very easy for her.  Nowadays she is in better condition than my sister and I!  And she runs us into the ground! :-)   And we all love every single minute of it.  My mom is truly my biggest hero and the best role model I could have ever dreamed of.  I love you mom!!

Here are my mom’s before (she is standing with my little sister) and after photo’s (doesn’t she look fabulous!):

Why So Hostile? A Blog To ‘hdsegal’

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Isn’t it funny how some people can be total hypocrites? As defined by Webster’s Dictionary a ‘hypocrite’ is either 1 : a person who puts on a false appearance  of virtue or religion and/or 2 :  a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or  feelings.  I have not been a member of BodyBuilding.com for very long, but I have had a chance to read through a lot of people’s blogs and comments.  I came across one yesterday that, honestly, stumped me.  Her blog was full of criticism towards other people and hypocrisy, because she certainly didn’t practice what she preached.  So I sent her a comment pointing out some of the blatant ‘do as I say, not as I do’ comments.  If you’re going to dish out the criticism to other people, you should damn well be able to take it directed back at you.  That is really not true in this persons case.  Not only did she go into her blog and delete my profile name (she changed it to ‘anonymous’), and delete all of my comments, but she found the time to then go to my blog and leave a rude comment and leave a couple of rude comments on my profile page.  I find it interesting that she does not have ANY comments listed on her profile page.  Maybe because she gets a lot of negative comments regarding her attitude.  I decided not to direct anything to her directly because she will just delete it, which takes away the option of anyone being able to form their own opinion based on the evidence presented.  Instead, I decided to blog about it, so that the comments and points can’t be deleted.  I don’t expect everyone to agree with me and with so many different types of personalities I don’t expect everyone on this site to get along and play nicely together.  But I do believe in fairness and since she deleted everything I wrote, I am using this as my opportunity to state my case.  And I am pretty certain that she will read this blog and have plenty to say, but unlike her, I won’t delete any of her comments because I think her comments will show her true personality better than anything else.

So, here are some of the posts that I read from ‘hdsegal’ that I ended up commenting on…

On Feb. 20th she wrote… “MsFitness, I think everyone is tired about reading about your implants.  It’s old news now, alot of women have been there and done that, next….. Anyway, I’ve been noticing alot of people on this site have to tell us when they shit, throw up, get implants, get sick, etc….Who ****ing cares, we just want to know your workout progress, not when you shit and throw up.  I mean please people, we all have been there and done that!” On Feb. 22nd she starts off her post with this… “I’ve had a bit of a cold since Fri.  So not feeling too great…” and ends with this… “p.s. Please people stop posing in your underwear and bra no one wants to see that crap unless they are at a strip club!  This is a ****ing bodybuilding site, not an audition to be a stripper or male dancer.” And on Feb. 23rd she has this to say… “By the way people, if you don’t want the truth about something, then don’t ask me.  And if you don’t like what I have to say on my blogs, then don’t read it! It’s just that simple.”

After reading these and seeing so many different instances of hypocrisy I left her a comment on her blog (the one she deleted).  I can’t recreate exactly what I said but here’s the gist of it…  ‘I find it funny that you tell people that if they don’t like what you say on your blog, then don’t read it, yet you are constantly commenting about other people’s blogs… why don’t you practice what you preach and not read it or say anything about it.  You comment about Ms. Fitness and the fact that she is sharing something personal about herself to the women who admire her on this site… why comment or read her posts if you don’t like what she has to say?  She has been a member of this site since 2006 and is a positive influence on a LOT of the women here.  You say that you are tired of people blogging about being sick, having boob jobs, etc., yet your very next blog post is about you being sick!  Why tell other people not to write and then turn around and write about it yourself a few days later?  You talk about people posing in their bras and panties and how this is a body building site and not a porn site, yet you post just a head and shoulder shot of you that no one knows the age of (it could be 15 years old for all we know), and disgusting pictures of Beavis and Butthead as your progress pictures… then tell people who comment about it not to look at it if they don’t like it.  Well if you don’t like the bra a panty pictures… don’t look at them.  Practice what you preach!’

She obviously didn’t like my comments and after commenting to me several times (which I will post below) she deleted my original post to her.  Here’s the comment she posted on my blog…

And you don’t know what the **** you are talking about so go to hell if you don’t like it!

I didn’t reply to her comments directly, because she would just delete them.  And I will keep her comments posted on my profile page along with my comment back to her (it is on my profile page).

So, just like she comments on my blog.. ‘this is a free country and I speak my peace’ and ‘if you don’t like my blogs, don’t read them’.  I am speaking my peace and if you don’t like this blog, don’t read it.  And let me just remark on a couple of your comments.  I never said you weren’t a beautiful woman, your profile picture shows that you are so I’m not sure why you feel the need to comment that you are so much more attractive than me.  I never said anything at all about your looks.  There are many factors that determine beauty, and I know that I am beautiful on the inside, and that’s where it counts.  And I don’t have progress pictures posted because my mom made sure that I was ALWAYS physically active and ate quality food.  So I have never been overweight and therefore have no progress pictures to show a transformation.  And I don’t feel the need to post a bunch of pictures of myself wearing bathing suits or a bra and panties.  I personally don’t do it, but I’m not knocking anyone else who does it either.  Like you said, if I don’t like them, I don’t look at them!  As for my belly, I happen to like my belly.  I have never wanted to compete so I keep my body fat levels around 16% which is a healthy range for an athlete.  But 16% does not shed enough bodyfat (on me) to show a "washboard" abdomen like a lot of the women on this site achieve.  Oh, and I have spent a lifetime watching what I eat so I am not worried about what I will look like later on in life.  Your comments are mean spirited and petty and really show the type of person you are.

With all that said… I will take your advice and not read your blogs.

Cross Country Skiing… The ULTIMATE Work Out!

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Went on a cross country skiing trip with friends this weekend.  I think that cross country skiing is the BEST workout for the entire body.  And the cardio benefits are amazing!  I ended up pushing myself and managed to ski 45 miles this time.  It’s a grueling amount of miles to do, but WOW what a work out!  If you have never tried it, I highly recommend it.  No one is too old to learn!

Hello World!!!

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Just found this site and it looks to be right up my alley!  I have always been into fitness, but it has always been a long, uphill battle!  Some people don’t really have to work to be fit.  They eat right and do a little exercise and they look great.  Genetics in my family are not so kind.  Obesity runs rampant in my family… thyroid problems, diabetes, liver problems, etc.  So if I even think of having a piece of cake I gain 10 pounds as punishment.  And if I miss a day at the gym, my muscle disappears.  I had surgery a few years ago, and that was the worst!  I lost all of my muscle tone in a matter of weeks.  And it took six full months of heavy work-outs to regain it.  Life is just not fair sometimes!  But fitness is such a way of life to me that I don’t really think about not doing it.

Good luck to everyone!
