A friend of a friend brought a short podcast to my attention on her body politics/fat acceptance blog, though my interpretation of the podcast will take a different direction. She references a Scientific American Podcast which talks about a study where subjects watched a virtual representation of themselves exercising - this made them more likely to exercise within the next 24 hours and for longer durations. Now, with my current fitness goals, doing an hour of cardio is certainly NOT on the menu… what I would like would be a virtual version of myself doing at least 8 one arm military presses with my 16k kettlebell, or 10 chin ups…
As opposed to her assumption which was “OMG, I LOOK FAT… I must exercise” I think that the study’s results were possibly due to another form of the whole “visualize yourself succeeding” phenomenon, though instead of it happening all in your head its outside - part of the “I can DO this, because I can see myself doing it” thing. It hadn’t hit home what I had been doing with Bodyspace until I heard this podcast. I had found that there were A LOT of women basically my size/age on there and watching them succeed in their goals has been really boosting me along for the past 6 months or so. Occasionally I’ll do a search for women who are also 5′3″ and see what they’re up to - winning fitness/figure competitions, doing really heavy lifting, totally transforming themselves and feeling the accomplishment and empowerment that comes from reaching your goals… and setting new ones. Thats inspiring. I tell myself - she’s about your age, she’s your height, she’s been training hard with a LOT of dedication, but you can do that too if you want. Then again, I’m also inspired by people who aren’t my size… like Aneta Florczyk - here she is deadlifting over 683 lbs!!! that’s some motherf’ing GIRL POWER right there. Granted I don’t need to ever lift that much, or even anywhere near it, but I’m glad that she is and I’m terribly inspired by it. Wait a sec… she’s only a few inches taller than me… there’s hope YET! :)
