Stupid scale…..

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

I’m going to get a new bathroom scale… ours is… horrible.   I have to reset the spring everytime and even then, depending on where I step or which foot hits first, or if one of my eyelids is shut then the scale reading may vary by 5-7 lbs!   So I have NO IDEA what I really weigh… I used the "dr’s office" style scale at the gym and came up with a reading 10 lbs over anything at home.  Luckily, my body fat calipers/calculations have show improvement or I would probably have gotten upset.  I mean.. I *know* I look/feel better, so the scale is no big thing.  On the other hand, I would like to know so I could get happy about the bits of lean mass I’ve gained….

Its digital scale time I think - what do you like about your home scale, and where can I find one like it??

Manual arrived!

Its time to get my "study" on - this thing is about the size of the local phone book!  Here’s hoping I can call up my good study skills from the past - its been over 8 years since I graduated from college!  Looks like I’m going to need to make some flash cards for all of these cool new words too…..

By example

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

Yesterday my boyfriend really started to notice that I’m looking and feeling better - he remarked "wow, I didn’t realize how much the junk/rich food had been effecting you" I could then see that he was also thinking "I wonder how much its been effecting ME".  Later in the day he sent along an email with product links to treadmills he was considering - I didn’t have to say a thing.   So apparently the "by example" thing was working, I just needed to be more patient.  Glad I did, now I don’t seem like a nag and he’s making the decisions to be healthier for himself - which should "stick" better I think.

I’m buying a copy of the ACE 3rd edition Personal Trainer manual with the study guide and sample test this week - I can’t wait to get this info.   Has anyone taken the  "hands on" seminar?  It sounds really cool - especially since my "experience" has mainly been from going to the gym myself, and talking with trainers, bodybuilders there.  Also - if anyone has some study tips for the ACE certification, then I’m all ears!   I’m a good test taker (ACT, SAT, GRE were not so bad) so the idea of taking a test isn’t intimidating, I just want to make sure I know what to expect.

Yay for increased stamina… and fitting into old favorites again

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

The workouts and new food choices are definately paying off - I wore an "old favorite" outfit to the club last night and it looked great - I also was able to keep dancing for a whole lot longer than a month ago - hurrah for more fun.

Its too warm to wear right now, but my old school bright red stretch knit Betsy Johnson dress fits again - I couldn’t be happier!!!

A deal, and a request for suggestions

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Looks like my "business neighbor" (their warehouse is near mine and we hang out sometimes) wants to get rid of a treadmill for cheap - $200… it looks like a nice one - I’ll get the model number next week hopefully so I can get the full 411 on it.  Looks like it needs a replacement handle so I’ll definately need to get that model number so I can track down the part

One of the reasons that I’m seriously considering buying the treadmill is that my boyfriend, who is overweight and has some body image issues does NOT like to go to the gym or work out in public.  Last time we went to the gym together it was not a good time - I like working out and actually enjoy going, so I am sometimes surprised at his reactions (and honestly funny facial expressions) he makes if I say something like: "HEY! Let’s go to the gym together!"  He did hint that he would be more comfortable doing his cardio at home…. if he had a treadmill at home with his music and tv….   not sure if he knows how easily I could obtain one :)  Granted, I wouldn’t mind having one around - I get antsy on rainy or days when the heat index is 98+ and would be happy to pound out a little cardio walking, so even if he was bluffing with the "treadmill at home" statement, I’d end up using it on cardio days.

I’m not a nag, and I never want to be, but I know that his Dr. has recommended quite firmly that he lose some weight with diet and exercise.  So far I’ve tried the passive "by example" method and that doesn’t seem to be working - what are ways that you’ve have helped encourage a reluctant spouse/partner/friend/whatever to start in on a healthy lifestyle?

So hot here in Florida!

Friday, August 10th, 2007

My poor little dog has wanted to go on a nice long walk, but its been too hot out for her.  Today I made sure to get up extra early and we had a great time - she even got to meet some new dog friends and I got in a little bit of "extra credit" cardio.  Since she’s so small (4lbs) she’ll sprint for short distances and then walk so she can be somewhat like a little interval setter.  I end up carrying her after a while though.   No biggie.

More of my "isopure oatmeal" this morning, and I’m getting better at "standing my ground" in regards to some of the fatty meals that my boyfriend seems to crave, and that I’ve caved to in the past.  NO more! I feel so much better eating my way anyway.

I’m thinking today may call for a smoothie - what are some of your favorites??

Last nights “cheat meal of doom”

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

UGH.  It sounded innocent enough - duck confit napoleon, spinach stuffed cod on red pepper polenta, and slightly baked white chocolate merangues with fresh whipped cream and raspberries.  But… I felt so horribly bloaty after that and the wine.  I’m pretty sure I’m going to swear off the wine for a bit.  Sure, it tastes good, but I felt really blech a few hours later.  I’m also not used to all of that sugar.  Next week’s cheat meal will probably be a more sensible cheese pizza and salad affair if I have anything to do with it!  Predictably, a random 2 lbs of *something* water or whatnot is back today - thats expected after a cheat meal though - I suppose.  Let’s just say that me and my stomach are happy to be back on "the plan" today.

“2 minute lunch”

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Its kind of silly how psyched I am about this lunch I make - I have a bag of individually flash frozen ahi tuna steaks from costco…. I let one thaw in the sink in a pan of water while I do my kettlebell stuff, then afterwards I put a little bit  of soy sauce on one side and coat it with sesame seeds - that gets tossed down on a VERY HOT cast iron skillet for 1 minute  during that minute I put a little bit of soy sauce and sesame seeds on the uncooked side then flip it to cook for one minute.  Using a metal spatula I put it on a plate with the vegetables I’ve been steaming in the microwave for 2 minutes.  SCORE! :)

?? On a roll??

Looks like I must have lost more water weight, as I’m 3 lbs lighter than yesterday.  My lower abdomen is also getting flatter - thank goodness, I was afraid I was doomed to turn into my Mom or something! GAH! Also, I worked up the nerve to post my "before" picture taken last week - the website said that it would not be visible until I posted another progress photo, and honestly, that’s just fine with me.  I’ve reserved the same "outfit" to wear in these pictures so that I can really see the difference.

Not sure how it happened, but I actually got the bf to go out and do some cardio with me last night - there’s a nice neighborhood walking trail that’s long with plenty of things to look at.  We went for about 30 minutes which is a whole heck of a lot for him - he usually gets annoyed at 20 minutes or so of walking (don’t ask - YES he really needs to get on here too.)

I feel like my metabolism is finally getting the idea of what we’re trying to do here - the 6 small meals a day is starting to take off, I’m forming new habits and finding that sticking to them is getting easier and easier.  Also, my bf is realizing just how important this is to me and is presenting fewer opportunities for busting my eating plan.

Starting to see some progress…

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

I know that us girls have more measurement fluctuations than the guys, so I’ve decided to do some daily measurements and then consider their average at the end of the week.  Seeing the measurements from today compared to yesterday it seems that I’ve lost some water weight.  I drank a TON of water all during the afternoon/evening yesterday and it seems to have paid off.. I just have to remember that here in Florida during the hot summer that paying attention to hydration is very important (for a ton of reasons).

I am starting to feel better though in general, and already like how clothes are beginning to fit better as well.  Also I finally got the bf to stop cooking me super salty ham/eggs every morning - I appreciate the gesture but it was starting to really take its toll! I’m going to stick to my oatmeal and fruit breakfasts for a while.
