(With thanks to FitBit & Flobots) Power, I have it and it feels good, especially when I use it to make positive change in my Reality: Come lunch time, instead of riding or stretching, I will sometimes go down to the Town Lake Animal Shelter to visit with the dogs held there. Some of the canines are up for adoption, but about 2/3 are "in observation." Of these, a good number will be transferred to the "safe & petable" side of the facility, but some will get "retired." Whether it’s because they are found to be overly aggressive, carry illness, or have injury deemed "not worth treating," these poor pups will never know another home.
My first few visits to Town Lake Animal Shelter, I spent most of my time talking to and petting the dogs on the adoptable side of the complex. It’s nice to be able to walk, play with, and feed treats to pets you don’t have to clean up after. Since I was looking to Adopt, it also made sense to spend time "grading" the available candidates. Pretty soon though, the barks and whines coming from the "observation" wings of the shelter drew my attention.
Going over to the "no touching" kennels, I immediately noticed a difference. It wasn’t so much in the nature of the pets, it was in their appearance and surroundings. Though the many staff members and official volunteers do their best, pets far outnumber people and not all needs are met equally. The kennels in the adoption area are generally cleaner, get better sunlight, and their occupants seem a bit better groomed. Also, dogs that are sick, injured, or recovering are kept in the "no touch" area, furthering the more "gloomy" attitude I perceive there.
I don’t have a blue Staff shirt, or a yellow Volunteer shirt, but the dogs seem to know me. Maybe it’s that they smell the treats in my pockets, maybe (flattering myself?) they know my voice, and maybe it’s just that they appreciate someone coming by to give them some attention, many of my "temporary" friends wag their tails, jump up, and even emit short barks as they hear me calling out my approach to them. Dogs are dogs, they give Love without question and they need it back. I am glad to visit with all of my four legged friends and feed each of them a treat while sharing some Love.
Similar to the above, "I am human and I need to be Loved." (thanks Morrissey) Last night I saw a young woman whom I haven’t spoken to in a couple of months. It’s been many years since I first asked her out and even longer since I first met her. Both the lady and I have changed a lot through the years, especially me in the last 16 months. Anyways, I complimented my friend on her latest hairstyle and she lit up like a halogen bulb. Whether it’s because of my improved appearance, the fact that I was feeling positive, or just that I gave her attention, it was obvious my friend was very drawn to me. Since I am not at a stage where I feel getting into a new relationship would be of mutual benefit, there was no way I could take it further than being nice. So, I complimented the lady again on her hairstyle, I asked if she’d been "working out" (yes), I noticed her earings, and I told my friend I’d look forward to seeing her looking even happier and doing even better next time we meet!
I don’t wake up thinking "how am I going to make the world a better place today?" I do get out of bed and make time during my day to open doors, to compliment people, to help those I can and to overall improve my Reality by using my Power to do things that I deem good because they make me and others feel good!
Best!
