Felt Like I Could Lift The World!

Friday, September 26th, 2008

That’s what I pumped up to during last night’s workout. DK if it was starting off with a series of ascending weight Reverse Flyes, or the Metal video playing during my SL w/Bar exercise, or managing to Bench 155 over the course of my Training Session, but I felt Super Strong!

I was so pumped on adrenalin that I was having a hard time holding Body in check. Luckily, Mouth came to the rescue! Before Body could even complete the planned session, let alone get badly injured, Mouth started in wanting to bite. I found myself cruising by the gym’s assortment of power bars (sorry picks) more than once, and this added time between sets helped bring me down enough so I could go lower the weights and reduce the risk of injury.

So, though my lower back is a bit too sore today and hams are "slow cooking," I seem to have escaped real injury while still managing to get a huge pump going.

(Ah, Times Past! Maybe I didn’t Squat 255 for six reps, or even Squat at all, but this tastes just like I remember!)

Leg Raise 20
Reverse Flyes on Pec Deck
50 x 12
62.5 x 12
75 x 10
87.5 x 8
Leg Lifts 20
Stiff Legged Deads w/D-bell
20 x 12
30 x 10
Leg Lifts 20
Stiff Legged Deads w/Bar
135 x 8 x 2
Leg Lifts 20
Lat Raise
15 x 10 x 3
Leg Lifts 20
Leg Press
90 x 15
140 x 15
180 x 12
230 x 12
Leg Lifts 20
Lunges w/Bar 10 x each leg x 3
Leg Lifts 20
Possibly because I took time out between set to bench 135, 145, then 155, this workout took 70 minutes to complete. I’d been in Aikido for an hour before and last eaten an hour before that, no wonder Mouth was complaining!
Better!

It’s That Time Again!

Cheating the Iron

Monday, September 22nd, 2008
I’ve never been one to throw my weight around in the gym. Swinging my hips while curling, arching my back while benching, these aren’t the types of things I’m into. For reasons of safety and because I believe it better promotes maximum use of muscle, I prefer good form over “cheating” a weight up. That’s the build-up to me admitting that I cheated in the gym Saturday night.
Doing wide grip pulldowns with a weight 20% heavier than my normal safe range meant pulling a bit with my lower back. Since I have a herniation in L4/5, I could have easily hurt myself pretty badly. DK if my mind was playing tricks on me but, prior to the pulldowns, I ”warmed up” the lower back by doing low pulley rows stiff legged style (bending forward and back, not just keeping back straight while pulling). Maybe it’s more than luck which kept me from injury, but I hope to go back to lifting clean and proper soon!

Need to Focus

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

I am not sure what I am doing anymore. I go to the gym and I want to work X for high reps, but I end up training Y for low reps. I am lifting strong, and not getting hurt. I am eating big, and it’s not junk. I don’t crave pizza or nachos or chocolate, I just want more of whatever "clean" food I am having. I threw my diet off for a couple of days by eating more carbs (oats) than protein (chicken), but I’m back to "normal" now and Mouth still wants more food! I tried throwing some very dark chocolate (consistency of clay with faint sugary taste) in the tank, but that didn’t stop me from wanting more fuel. All I got out the "treat" was eyes like saucers, I’m wide awake at 3:00AM, not good. My hydration has been crap today, and maybe that has made it easier for the natural caffeine in the chocolate to keep me awake. Not even going for a swim and a four mile walk has turned the lights out, DK what to do!

Anyways, bottom line is I need to focus on my goals (lose fat/gain muscle) and do what it takes to accomplish them. If I end up lifting heavy now instead of starting in October, fine. I just need to keep feeling clothes get loose or seeing the scale go down!

Instinctive Training/Depressed?

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Plan for this month had been to slice off a bit of fat through monitoring of diet, regular training sessions using high reps, and fun cardio (row, bike, swim). Not sure why (maybe "cold" snap?), but body is totally asking for heavier weights and more food. Making things harder, different muscles are calling out to be used at random, I can’t seem to get much of a routine going!

Times Past, I used to suffer from Seasonally Acquired Depression (SAD). Recent cloud cover would easily trigger my SAD, but I thought I was over that illness and I definitely don’t remember ever having "raging hormones" and a will to lift heavy while being down. (Thought just crossed my mind that maybe it’s time to break out a few "day light" bulbs again.)

I am writing down what I eat and what I train, but I am ignoring reading my journals and just moving on by feeling. Weight has gone to 165 and stayed there, lifts seem stronger,  testosterone is definitely peaking…

Less than two weeks left before I have to turn in my Quarterly Report, maybe I will master my regime today.

(who has about a pound of dark chocolate and Tootsie Rolls on his desk and no longer craves any of it…)

Big Update: Though I’ve been blowing off routine, swimming in hormones, and wanting to eat/lift more, I’d really only been feeling down for a couple of days. Gee, I had soy & flax chips yesterday and today, plus soy milk last night. Gee, my body has previously proven that soy doesn’t provide fuel it can easily use. Gee, prior to eating a bag of these same chips two weeks ago, my body has no previous experience with flax. (I did feel like crap after eating that bag, but I had plenty of sugar and no sleep to blame it on!) So, as of this eve, I’ve decided not to eat flax/soy for a while and to see how things feel. Did blow my eating routine for tonight and put in "comfort" foods to help cleanse! (ha!)

Better!

Again, the daily intake

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

8:30AM     .5 cup oats, 1 scoop Gold Standard, 10 oz milk, large banana

10:45AM     1 slice whole wheat toast, 1 tbsp PB, 1 large Roma tomato, 1 small can of sardines in H2O

1:00PM (Tummy got Rumbly!)     2 chicken & egg tacos on wheat tortillas, 1 apple, 12 almonds

4:00PM     10 oz milk, chicken & egg taco, 1/2 cup soy & flax chips

Felt bloated by 5:00 and skipped my planned 6:30PM meal. During an Aikido session filled with calorie expenditure (I was a throwing dummy for someone practicing techniques for an advanced level exam), I somehow found time to analyze what I’ve been feeling and when it really started. Figured out my "blah" may be caused by soy & flax chips I’ve been eating. So, I blew the rest of my planned eating for the day and had an EAS choc/choc chip bar, 10 oz OJ, and another two tacos before closing down the machine. Along the way, I also worked arms and did some ab work:

Thursday: Bis & Tris

Leg Lift 20
Standing Hammer Curls 20 x 10
        30 x 10
        35 x 10 x 2
Leg Raises 15
Assisted Dips BW-60 x 8 x 3 (close grip)
Leg Raises 15
Preacher Curls B+20 x 8 x 3 (B= ~30#)
Leg Raises 15
Close Bench 95 x 8
    115 x 8
    135 x 5
    155 x 2
Leg Raises 15
