why lift in the first place, Mitch?

November 21, 2009

Recently, I ‘ve been lifting and eating clean consistently. A lot of my food cravings have disappeared and eventhough I have been lifting again for a brief period, I am starting to get compliments again. Today a male co-worker came up and said to me, "Your guns are looking pumped." Coming from a former wrestler and football player, I accepted the compliment graciously. More importantly I’ve come to relalze that a brief indulgence in strength training will yield results others can see. Today while browsing fitness sites, a question was answered that motivated me to continue to strive for greater gains.

"Why lift in the first place, and why strength training produces more results than cardio.’

Studies have estimated that for each pound of muscle that you add to your body, you burn an additional 35 to 50 calories per day. So, an extra 10 pounds of muscle will burn approximately 350 to 500 calories a day, or an extra pound of fat every 7 to 10 days, without making any other changes. In another study, researchers found that regular weight training boosts basal metabolic rate by about 15%. This is because muscle is ‘metabolically active ‘ and burns more calories than other body tissue even when you’re not moving.

So lifting burns fat even when I’m not moving, kewl.

The “Fat Devil Spirits” tried to get me.

November 18, 2009

A few days ago I was gloating over leaving 34% BF , finally.. Then a day or so later it appeared it had jumped back to 34.4. At first depression was trying to set in, but I killed it with clean eating and workouts. Re-measured again today and it was 33.0, and I told the fat devil spirits thats more like it.

Today I  was feelin cardio and did 20 minutes rebounding and 20 Nordic track, along with my version of a ab 100 routine, 10 exercises, 10 reps apiece.. Hey it’s a start..:-)

bi-tri workout

November 18, 2009

Took my L-glutamine and did a tri-bi workout and 20 minutes of rebound aerobics late nite.. Now I will be up all nite, but at least I didn’t procrastinate. Watched an inspirational Body Weight Challenge episode on FIT TV while I worked out. Kept me stoked and I learned while I worked out.

Meantime, I have decided my focus will be on body fat loss vs. body weight.. I’m more concerned about the toxic fat around my body organs..

Waiting for the perfect storm.. It never comes unless..

November 16, 2009

I’m been viewing successful transformations for the last 2 years.. A common thread of success seems to be blogging and pics. I realized my problem has been waiting for the perfect storm( perfect setting, lighting, background for a photo, perfect time, energy, fitness routine before working out, perfect topic, writing environment…perfect..perfect perfect leads to procrastination. So no  more waiting for the perfect anything, I’m just going to use what is and get er done.. It’s the only way..

Kids say the Darndest things….My baby is due in May 2010.

October 31, 2009

Working at a middle school with tweens (11-14) will give you a reality check whether you like it or not.  A few of the kids know I’m trying to get my Beachbody on. The other day a girl came up and took her pointed finger and poked it in my belly. Then she said," It’s hard, what happened I thought you were going to get a flat stomach." I told her my baby is due in May", implying my beachball will be a beach bod by then. Everyone in the lunch line laughed. My point is that kids can be brutally honest. That nite I poked my belly and she was right. It is hard. I smiled though, because I knew it was muscle buried under a layer of fat. Men have such a difficult time doing cardio.. But  finally I’ve found some cardio I like. And guess what. Since my last measurement I have lost 1% BF and 5 lbs. I am proud of me.. I finally listened to the succesful on this site. You can pump iron till the sheep come in, but until you eat clean , you will be just a bigg " FAT MUSCLE".   You and no one else will ever see your muscle under that lard.. And my goal this week is to blog, blog , blog..

almost procrastinated, thnx Eurasiansurgeon…

July 18, 2009

While cking my fitness journal I saw that  I had missed 2 days working out. I refused to make that 3.. So I went the one place I know will get you motivated.. I read a BB members blog.. She had recently had hernia surgery and set a goal to lose 10lbs in 10 weeks.. She did it, then competed , then won.. Her mantra… "Don’t skip a workout" , thnx Zumi.. After reading it I suited up , hit the gym and had an awesome chest workout.. Because my energy level was low today I just focused on one body part.. Then I did cardio on recumbent bike today..Mission accomplished…

week 3 day 13 of training…

July 14, 2009

After 13 non consecutive days of training I have reduced body fat by 1.7%.  At that rate I guesstimate it will take me 4 months to get down to around a healthy 17/18% BF..  Have to continue to step up my cardi(which I have) and clean eating.. At least now I have a standard and a goal to move forward to..
