Training to Heal, Healing to Train.

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

I have been perusing my “healing training” for about a month now, and am witnessing obvious improvements. The pain in my elbows and shoulders is almost gone, though not completely. I do miss getting under the weights, but I know that by following this self-prescribed therapy I will eventually come back stronger. All my therapists agree with that statement.

My Meridian Therapy trainer says I had the worst elbows he had ever seen; no wonder they gave out on me at my last meet! Even after a month of therapy I can still feel my bones moving in ways they shouldn’t when resistance stretching is applied, though there is continued improvement. However, I suspect it will be weeks before I dare load them up again with heavy weights.

Pilates has been a real eye-opener! I thought it was just a “girlie” excuse for “toning” and weight-loss. But it’s not! Pilates focuses on your core and, no matter how much I can bench or rack lift, my core needed a lot of strengthening. Pilates also teaches how move properly when exercising and I was doing it all wrong! For years! No wonder I had sore elbows and back! With Pilates you don’t employ the raw strength in your arms, chest, shoulders or legs, but instead apply relitively light core resistance with “proper” form and motion. Most of the time the proper form is just the opposite of what I do naturally; I sometimes feel like a contortionist getting things right. But it feels good, and I have actually come away with a SORE CORE from my workouts!

Everyone says I will be much stronger from these therapies when I get back to the heavy weights. I hope so! I can’t wait to hit the Static Resistance training to see what I can do, and what IT will do for me! Then back to the power lifting and hopefully, some amazing PR’s!
