Welcome!

Hey all! I just wanted to start a post for some of you personal trainers out there. I am semi new to the industry having just obtained my NSCA-CPT credentials this past December. I now have 6 clients and in my opinion things are going well so far. Most of the clients I have are out of any kind of shape with a back problem or a knee problem restricting some of my activities with them. I am curious about things others have been successful or unsuccessful with in training these kinds of clients. I can say training has been a challenge for me in that I am not yet at a point where I can tell how strong someone is to start them on weights. I have been encouraging my clients to do fitness assessments with me so that I can obtain some baseline measures and this has helped a lot. At any rate, I’d like to hear about specific exercises that you have liked and disliked and why…also anything pertinent to personal training would be helpful!!!

Thanks for the comment! I grew up in ATL, Ga but my family moved to Milwakuee in 1995. I have been all over the place…medical school has taken me from Champaign-Urbana, Illinois to ROckford, Illinois where I will be for another 2 years before residency. Who knows where that will take me?? I am a relatively new trainer at the local YMCA here…and it’s pretty chill I guess…we trainer’s pretty much supervise ourselves, but our clients keep us honest. I have been learning a lot of functional training methods from the other trainers which has been cool. There really is a lot to learn but I am enjoying it especially because I have some understanding of the anatomy and physiology behind the training so it reinforcing information for medical school! What about yourself…how long have you been in the business and what’s your story? Do you have any advice or suggestions? Do you go to some of the training conferences? I really want to, but I am only a part-time trainer and both money and time commitments preclude my ability to go. I have been thinking about getting into some fitness modeling/amatuer natural bodybuidling in the next 6- 12 months…any experience with that?

It’s funny to me how many people on bb are health professionals in some way. I guess it’s to be expected but I have come across a lot of nurses (LPN and RN), personal trainers, and the like…some of us should get together and open up a super rehab gym or something cool like that. I actually have been thinking about it for years, but first things first right…finish school…pay back loans…get a nice wife…have a family…open up a preventative health/community center/gym…(not necessarily in this order of course…haha) where people learn how to live CORRECTLY/HEALTHY in terms of cooking right and exercising among other things! WHO’S COMING WITH ME????????????
