Darren - 50% Carbs, 30% protein, 20% Fats for a diet and REALLY focus on lifting and working up to the heavier weights when you are in the gym. Putting on muscle means pushing yourself and making your body think that the heavy stuff that you are working with is the new "normal" and it needs to adapt to that. Book to recommend: "Hgh Intesity Training the Mike Mentzer Way" ... you can get it off Amazon for pretty reasonable.

Darren, where are those calves that look so terrible? haven't seen em yet, but I'm sure they are part of an awesome foundation that holds up that growing torso. Keep at it, friend. Peace, Rich

Hey Darren -

The new pic you posted is starting to show some definition. Skinny? No way, there is muscle there. More definition will come as more fat is lost. Make sure that the carbs are under control and that you are getting 25-30 grams of protein a meal and the muscle will pile on as you persist. Keep at it -- and be careful in the restaurants in Florida!

Have a good time!

Hey Darren - Glad to see that you are getting so much great advice! Very cool!

Calves: a body part that one could get away with doing twice a week.

Your pics are looking great bro!

hey man, i have tried many ex's for building calves but lately my fav is using the smith machine, stack it up with as much iron as possible the do raises with the bar resting on the shoulders. I found for best results use something under your feet to act as a step so u can get the whole range of movement in the down direction also. I do 4 sets of 20, 10 with a wide stance then 10 with feet together it gives a real burn. Then i just use a 45 legpress machine and push it with my toes, again about 20 erps, 4 sets.
Your calves are a muscle that is used a hell of a lot more than most other muscles and therefore the reps should be high and means also the recovery is good allowing u to train them every second if not every day and the recovery should be fine and growth will be imminent.

Hey Darren - thanks for the blog visit. Keep consistent with the diet dude and be relentless in creating intensity in the gym. I'm sure after a couple/three months you'll be amazed at the changes.

Funny thing about my post, we didn't end up taking a day off! We kept right at it. Worked out Saturday and Sunday. It is turning out to be like mutual abuse at this point. LOL The entertainment value is getting pretty high. He thought that I was putting him through something torturous with this 5x5 business, so he feels obliged to return the favor when it is his turn to run the workout. I am going to be out of town this coming weekend with family in Northern California, so I will eventually be getting some days off, but not this week.

Stay focused!
