Effects of Anabolic Steroids

Dane_Fletcher

Anabolic steroids increase the body’s ability to make muscle. It does this by sending amino acids back to the muscle. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein which is need to make muscle. It prompts muscle build up and discourages the build up of fat.

Anabolic Steroids are not just used to make athletes faster and stronger, although this is what we first think of when we hear the words. Anabolic Steroids can be beneficial to people who have suffered from weight loss after a severe or long term illness that has resulted in massive weight loss and the loss of muscle. They can also benefit patients with continuing infection that could be a result from treatments for cancer or AIDS. Even when used for medical purposes there are effects from use of Anabolic Steroids that must be addressed.

Irreversible health problems can develop from the use of steroids, some gender specific and some age specific. Ladies you might have facial hair growth. You can develop male pattern baldness. There may be changes or cessation of the menstrual cycle and/ or enlargement of the clitoris. Your voice could change also, by becoming deeper. While men may develop breast a women could experience a reduction in breast size.

The effects on adolescents maybe stunted growth due to premature skeletal maturation and accelerated puberty changes. An adolescent may not reach expected height if anabolic steroids are taken before the growth spurt of adolescences. Men may experience reduced sperm count and shrinking of the testicles. A man may also become infertile or impotent. Baldness may develop or develop prematurely. Breast may develop in some men. There is also a greater risk of developing prostate cancer. Pain or trouble urinating is also a possibility.

Some of the short term effects for both sexes can be acne. Fluid retention and rapid weight gain can be a side effect. High blood pressure (which could lead to a stroke) and higher cholesterol levels are also side effects. Insomnia and headaches can be attributed to the usage of anabolic steroids. A reduction of sexual function for both males and females can occur.

There are also long term effects from anabolic steroid usage such as blood clotting difficulty and/or clotting disorders. Anabolic steroids also increases the chance of injuring ligaments, tendons and muscles. Both genders could experience reproductive organ damage, as well as liver damage. The chance of premature heart attacks or strokes are increased. Anabolic steroid usage by injection can lead to bacterial infections, abscesses and HIV/AIDS.

These are the physical effects that steroids can lead to, but there are also the psychological effects to consider. A person may become more aggressive or lead them to be more violent. The most common term related to these side effects is “Roid Rage”. Paranoid jealousy is an effect that has been reported along with delusions. Mood swings are very common in steroid use. Depression may develop when steroid usage is stopped causing a dependence on the drug. Along with delusions a person may have impaired judgment stemming from feelings of invincibility.

Anabolic steroids do have their benefits but the side effects need to be weighed before starting them. If a person is already at risk for stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure or liver disease, one should weigh the benefits against the risks you would be taking by starting an anabolic steroid regimen. Along with the physical side effects the physchological effects need to be considered also.
