Mind-Body Connection
Sunday, March 15th, 2009Today I was reading Muscle and Fitness Magazine and I came across a very interesting article titled, "Head First." The article is all about using the power of your mind to grow your muscles. A study was conducted using four control groups of olympic athletes. Control group 1 used 100% physical training and no mental training. Group 2 used 75% physical and 25% mental, group 3 50% physical and 50% mental, and group 4 25% physical and 75% mental. The athletes in control group 4 leading up to the games and including the results of the olympics, showed the most gains and actual success. Another study shows where 30 athletes were seperated into 3 groups. One mentally trained their hip flexors, one physically trained them with weights, and one did no mental or physical training. The athletes in the mental group experienced an 24% increase in strength from simply thinking of training, while the weight lifters topped with 28% increase, and the third group saw no significant changes at all. It is amazing that the mind can have such an impact on the body, yet so little people actually use it. Simply visualizing yourself doing an exercise and mentally focusing on the muscle you are training, can do wonders for your results in the gym. I’m going to start treating and training my mind just like I would any other muscle. I’m excited to get started with my new weapon(the mind). I’ll post some pics in a couple of weeks to show my results. If you have any questions about this, just ask. Don’t underestimate the power of the mind!
