feeling deprived?
Feeling Deprived?
I hear this a lot.. I am offered cakes, muffins, and all kinds of delicious assorted pastries on a daily basis at my real estate office and many other places (drooling over the Starbucks pastry case every morning). I always turn them down, and I’ll hear so many people say to me, “why deprive yourself?… life is too short.”
I see these people chowing down all the muffins every week and I’m actually thinking the same thing about them… Aren’t they depriving themselves of nice bodies by eating them everyday? None of these people are in shape and they are all sitting around with big belly rolls and jiggles all over their bodies. I’m just thinking to myself when I see them, that they are depriving themselves of the great feeling of being fit. They are depriving themselves of being at their best. So I guess it’s all in how you look at it. I’ve personally never felt deprived by turning down the goodies. Sure I love them. I was raised on junk food and sugar,.. it’s like mother’s milk to me. But the feeling of being fit all the time is far greater to me than the temporary satisfaction of feasting on the morning pastry basket. So I will keep turning them down (not easy though) and I will not be depriving myself of the body I want. Everyone has different fitness goals, but I think no matter what they are, it will have to involve some level of making cutbacks on all that stuff. So next time you’re feeling like ‘oh, poor me… I can’t eat that stuff for my fitness goals’.. focus on what you’re getting (the body you want),… not what you’re giving up and it gives it a new positive perspective. A fit body requires a lot of food, but unfortunately you probably won’t reach your fitness goals by feeding on doughnuts, cookies and cakes. I have to look at those goodies practically every single day, and I don’t think they’ll ever go away, so that is how I get past it.

You’re right - they’re wrong. Amazing to think of : The world over sugar is the cheapest thing - i wonder how many people sugar has buried. As many as cigarettes? Sugar the silent assassin!
January 14, 2008 at 7:41 am
I agree with you!!! True, I have a while to go but your rational is on point. Everyone is teasing me but you’re sooo right! An amazing body is better than 10 seconds of taste bud heaven. Haha. I love your blogs. They always keep me on track. You’re such an inspiration!!

It just comes down to what you want most, AND what you’re thinking about most of the time. I found that if I’m feeling deprived and thinking about junk food, then I usually end up giving in, at least a little. But if I stay focused on what I want, i.e. my long-term goals, I am almost always successful.
January 14, 2008 at 9:42 am
Couldn`t agree more. Poeple don`t understand that you made your choice because it`s important to you, as well as they who have made their choice. It`s a matter of tolerance towards other people`s choices, I have never understood why people come to us athletes offering muffins and stuff (same happens to me, and probably to all athletes right?). Do they want to see you fall? do they want to drag you down to mediocrity?
Cause I respect their choices, if they want to be fat that`s fine, I`m not convincing people everywhere I go or try to drag them to the gym with me…
Train hard!

I also agree with your blog. One thing that you can’t forget is that people have evolved from eating only what was necessary to function to eating much more than they really need! The United States has become a fast food capital of the world and people usually grow up eating it! When it comes to doughnuts and muffins, all you have to do is run in to the local sheetz or other convenience store and grab one. The fact that we have these things at our finger tips is just one cause of the increasing obesity in America. Getting away from all that…personal choice is also important! We have to teach ourselves to read our bodies. Are we really eating because we are hungry? Is this doughnut really something that I want to put in my body? After reading an article about cancer, I have found that cancer cells feed off of things such as sugar, milk, and artificial sweeteners all of which create an acidic environment that cancer cells thrive in. Next time you look at that delicious Krispy Creme Doughnut just think about what it does to you! You most likely will put it down and grab something a lil bit healthier!

Not only for these reasons, but I’m sorry, when it comes to bed time, I don’t want to be all over a jelly rolled lady! And to me, it’s simple as that. Nah, not really, but you get what i’m saying, ha. Good blog.
January 15, 2008 at 9:33 am
I agree the feeling you get from being fit, of not having all the aches and pains and weakness and shortness of breath, outweighs the high I can get from the very best food or drink. And, I mean, I love good food and drinks. But I didn’t know just how much I was missing until I started working out just a bit over two years ago.
By the time they’re in their 30s, people who are unfit probably have been that way so long they don’t know any different. They can’t help but think you’re depriving yourself because they can’t imagine what it is you gain from the choices you make.
January 15, 2008 at 10:07 am
Thank god, a new rant. Haha, I love reading your posts, they are so insightful, and good perspective. Keep it up. And yes it’s true, the good feeling you get from eating those foods lasts for a short moment, but being fit, and feeling good about having self control and treating your body right lasts SO much longer.

You have great Blogs, I love that your so honest and say it like it is.
January 15, 2008 at 3:09 pm
I needed to hear that. Thanks.

Eat Muffin: Be Muffin. Did you say, STARBUCKS!!!!!
January 16, 2008 at 1:40 pm
So true!! It always tastes so good going down…but the after affect of bloat and everything else isn’t worth it! Great blog!
January 16, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Hi CT - I love your articles and once again this is so true. Its so strange now that I am becoming more fit and absolutely loving it that people think " Oh she is depriving herself, she must be depressed or something is wrong. just the opposite, I am on top of the world with the way i feel and even better when I get to say, "No" to the junk that people eat. I agree, you are not doing the depriving, they are.

Dear CT,
Your words educate and inspire me. Take care, Tom from Lake McQueeney
January 18, 2008 at 4:43 am
i’m working on getting rid of the jellyroll, it’s doesn’t look good, althought, I’m fit now, but the feeling of it on my body is just plain disgusting.
January 18, 2008 at 5:53 pm
Finally new blog! Thank U! You made my day.. Whereas I’m the master of excuses, you’re confident about your fitness believes and you won’t let anybody get you down! And I’m sure these people are jealous of your strength of character, they can’t even imagine how it is possible to resist all the goodies. YOU make them feel worse about themselves.. But, hey - it’s not your fault - it’s their choice. And I’m full of appreciation for you how you don’t even let the voice :"Oh, I’m so stressed and poor, I deserve a muffin" even touch you. You’re THE GREATEST;)
January 18, 2008 at 7:26 pm
You are so right. Today we are bombarded with junk food. Just walk a block and you will hit a fast food place. Growing up in school every time there was a birthday there were cupcakes galore, everytime the whole class was good we had an ice cream party. I grew up in a generation that if you did a good job you deserved junk food and if you had a bad day ice cream or cookies will make it all better. I know better now, but there are so many people that are conditioned this way. Its common place to see people having junk food and a lot of it and anyone who eats healthy or reads labels in the grocery store is considered "not normal". I still have a way to go, but you truly are an inspiration.
January 21, 2008 at 4:59 pm
I was one of those who believed giving up my precious krispy kreme, I was depriving myself. After reading this blog, you’ve given me a new perspective. Now, I’ll think about the body I’m depriving myself of by eating those bad foods. So, thank you for that. By the way, seen your ad in my new oxygen mag, Way To Go!! 40 looks good on ya girl!!!
January 22, 2008 at 2:49 pm
oh how i wish i had read this sunday night as the left over bday cake and i were in a staredown! cake won…. that time.. not the next!! thanks for continuing to be a source of great inspiration, CT!
January 22, 2008 at 7:22 pm
YAY!! A new blog entry!!! I wished you wrote these more often, I love reading what you have to say…
January 23, 2008 at 7:42 am
Nice Blog, and you are so right. They think I am taking it too far at work just because I turn down their weekly feast of food.
I have to say its hard at times but the feeling of not breaking my diet and reaching my numbers makes me feel way much better.
Trish

They’re right, life is too short [on that diet when you have a massive coronary and keel over]
January 23, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Great blog Ms Aging In Reverse.
January 23, 2008 at 7:32 pm
CT you make a great point, as for me I enjoy treats in moderation. Knowing that I can eat or chose not to helps keep me sane. For example I had dinner tonight with my family. When they didn’t have any coffee ice cream, I had their side salad for desert.
January 24, 2008 at 12:44 am
wow nicely put I read a couple of your blogs and went on your website… I love you perspective on working out and eating healthy its truely inspirational.
January 27, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Great post, it really puts things in to perspective. Yes the sweets are good but it is such a momentary pleasure. Being fit and feeling strong and healthy is an all the time thing.
January 27, 2008 at 11:20 pm
I think its part jealousy too,
I am faced with more than the food part,
I live in a dorm where alcohol and marijuana
has replaced food, and people offer all the time
and feel offended when I don’t say yes.
I don’t get why people would offer you poison (alcohol) that costs about 7$ a drink and you say no.
If ur my friend , why try to make me pay 7$ for poison to harm my body and get offended when I say politel no thank you.
Same with muffins and anything else bad for my body.
February 1, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Like your watchword "consistency," the phrase "positive perspective" (Aren’t they depriving themselves of nice bodies) is something else I can add to my CT as Mentor handbook!
Thanks, Laura. And although I hit the occasional Starbucks, last year I had a total of three beers and this year I’m at zero on the ol’ imbibing. I think cigarettes and alcohol really do a number on a person’s appearance, especially over the long haul.
February 3, 2008 at 11:35 pm
you are always right on !!
thanks for the inspiration tonight :-]
February 6, 2008 at 5:30 pm
I needed to read this today! Thanks for the great blog. Lisa
February 11, 2008 at 2:01 pm
True. But once in a while a ‘treat’ is ok, LOL
February 15, 2008 at 8:00 pm
I too am faced with goodies nearly every day. Over the past year or so, as I began to pay more attention to my eating habits, I have learned to say no about 80 percent of the time. After reading this, I think I gathered a little more strength to bring that percentage up even more. Thank you.
February 16, 2008 at 5:36 pm
You are so right! I loved reading this post. I always say…"if you eat like everyone else, you’ll look like everyone else…"

I look at you and you are so fit! You say that you were raised on junk food, but I think, "How can that be?" I was too, no limits, just finish my plate was the rule. I have been trying to break my bad habits FOR GOOD. I succeeded for 6 months, nothing but clean eating, downsized my taste buds, lost 30 pounds on my own (143 to 113). It seems I am half way back to my old ways. I just want to eat clean and healthy for the rest of my life. How do you do it coming from where you came from?
February 20, 2008 at 8:27 am
office?? I thought real estate agents lived out of their vehicles with a blackberry growing on the side of their head……..office? Maybe thats where you guys go to hide…..
February 21, 2008 at 8:18 pm
you are seriously an incredible writer.. you need to write a book and you are an outstanding fitness role model.
February 22, 2008 at 1:28 pm
I have a question for CT…..
I’ll keep it simple since by the look of things, you’re a very busy and motivated woman. I’m just starting out, again, with lifting and cardio (I use ice hockey and running) and I have what I hope is a decently simple question:
you obviously work hard to look as good as you do!
Is counting every calorie coupled with always eating the right amount of really good food (fruits, veggies, proteins in various forms) the biggest difference maker when it comes to losing weight and building muscle?
I’ve heard different things about calorie counting and was curious from someone that’s not selling anything and has done it. I figure your opinion wouldn’t be biased!
Thanks,
Frank

I get the same thing at work…only it’s breakfast tacos….and I’ve eaten them b4 and they are GOOD! Makes my powerbar and cottagecheese and yougurt look like crap! At least I like the tastes of the things I eat, so I’m not suffering…and all my coworkers have grown to accept it and admire my tenacity and dedication now. Good luck!
February 27, 2008 at 12:16 pm
Nice blog! I feel the same way about alcohol. I’m a student and a bartender and its really hard to turn down free drinks and not party w/ the rest of the group. But, i just keep thinking "nobody wants to tip a fat bartender!" Plus, i always feel better when i wake up in the morning minus the bloat and hang over. Thanks for the reminder
March 3, 2008 at 11:08 am
heya!!
junk stuff is like smoking i think, people just need to get the right frame of mind.By the way what kind of work out do you do. People might think i am crazy because i am so confuse about the whole bodybuilding thing that i have been going around asking for help.where and how did you started from? i am lostttttttttttttt. what advise can you give. Around here ( where i live)is so difficult to find a gym instructor that don’t think i am a bit crazy. Like this one that told me that she didn’t get why women is so mad about gaining muscle.. can you believe?
March 15, 2008 at 11:30 am
I see people at my job doing the same thing on an almost daily basis.. They always turn to me and say that they wish they had my willpower or "how do you stay so skinny?" Well for one, I don’t eat all that crap because I’ll go back to my desk and chew on apple slices instead.. or I might already be full from my morning protein shake + yogurt. I agree… being healthy is gaining much more than what you lose by giving into temptation.
March 16, 2008 at 2:46 pm
You inspire me! My Husband is always telling me how much of a difference I will see if I cut out all the sweets I eat and I know this is true but i just didn’t have the will power but this blog and ur pics especially the one about the birthday party where you had cake and a few drinks the before and after pic amazed me now its not gonna be so hard to turn down all that junk food! Thanks CT! OH AND ALSO I HAVE NEVER SEEN A 40 YEAR OLD LOOK SO HOTT!

April 1, 2008 at 10:33 pm
I agree with your blog and I too face that problem at the office. For the most part my coworkers are use to me turning them down for lunch since I prefer going home instead. However being that they are all overweight females sometimes they can get pretty mean with their snide remarks . I can’t help them if they don’t want to help themselves, therefore I ignore them and do what is right for myself. I refuse to let any negativity derail my goals.Thank you for that blog, I think alot of us fit people feel the same way, but just didn’t know how to put it in words. Keep it up for yourself and all of us that look up to you.
April 7, 2008 at 9:59 pm
I have to agree, even though this is the main reason I don’t yet have a visible cut in my abs. I’m still at the point of see, like, eat, regret. Sucks, I know but for some reason that food whips my ass every time. Its a hard battle but I’m glad I read this blog, thanks.
April 9, 2008 at 11:29 am
I don’t know how I missed this blog — but I love it! So true! I’m finally overcoming that voice in my head that thinks I should reward myself with junk food! What kind of reward is that??
Thanks!!
April 12, 2008 at 7:09 pm
I know what you mean. At my job, I work about 12-13 hours a day, and if I don’t have my own food with me it does have it’s disadvantages. Everyone, literally everyone there orders out everyday & raids vending machines. I’m usually looked at like I have a 3rd eye if i don’t order with them. But the willpower can be difficult.

Hey chickentuna, just wanted to mention that when someone says to you, "life is too short to worry and restrict eating," tell them they are shortening their lives by eating all that junk food. heart disease is the number one killer and eating those muffins from starbucks clogs arteries and fat is bad. its just plain dangerous.

Very true ChinkenTuna
Achieving a certain level of fitness requires sacrifice. And its the sacrifice that make our acheivents so worthwhile.
