boring workouts

Through the years, I’ve had many co-workers from my office ask me about working out and I have noticed that they all tend to say the same thing about exercising.

“I’m bored with my workouts, and I think cardio is very boring….”
–One of the silliest workout excuses ever.

Oh really,… are you bored working out?  Well no shit,… it ‘IS’  boring.  I’ve done many exciting things in my life so far
and working out is certainly not one of them.  It is just something that needs to be done on a regular basis if you would like to keep yourself fit.

You know what is even more boring than working out though?  How about trying on all your clothes and having them not fit, …. with
fat rolls and jiggles everywhere, and a cellulite party all over your ass.  That just may be a little bit more boring than keeping up with working out regularly.

I don’t blame anyone for thinking the workout process is supposed to be a thrill though.  Just about every single commercial for exercise equipment and
fitness  products out there,   claims that is is fun (and easy)….. I know what fun is,… and working out isn’t any ****ing fun and I think everyone knows that or everyone in the world would all be doing it everyday.  It just comes down to this, fun or not…..if you really want to be fit and take good care of yourself,   you are going to have to get your ass up and do your
workouts consistently.

If by chance you ARE doing it  just for fun and you’re getting big thrills from walking on a treadmill but don’t want to see any results at all,…. then make sure you are never consistent about it and keep starting over every week after you screw up..  This way you are guaranteed not
to ever see any results and you'’ll just keep having your fun and thrills with the workout process once in a while.

If you  actually DO workout consistently and eat right all the time,  you’ll keep getting in better shape and that can actually be fun and exciting in it’s own
way.   But if you are waiting for thrills and excitement everytime you go to the gym or exercise,… I think it will be a long wait.

Your a 100% right about working out. Its not fun its a way of life, but I do think it can be enjoyable if it helps to relieve stress or its a way to meet up with friends.

  2. brent99 Says:

You write the greatest blogs on the planet! That was another classic.

  3. chick! Says:

    well said!!!

  4. bmt424 Says:

FUN…FUN…I Friggin’ HATE Working out and I HATE CARDIO with a passion! A matter of fact I made 3 little videos about how much I HATE CARDIO!!!!

  5. nickohrn Says:

I think some people get confused (myself including) by the actual fun part of working out. The fun part is when you look in the mirror, flexing or not, and can say "I look better than I did yesterday, last week, or last month. This is great."

The non-fun part is walking on the treadmill for 30-60 minutes at 4.0 mph with 12.5 incline so you can burn the fat you need to. I do have to admit, though, that lifting weights does give me a kind of thrill sometimes… something I might even consider fun.

  6. Marc Says:

    Great blog CT very true!

  7. Marc Says:

Great blog & very true, I agree its a case of get on with it or dont complain about it! You say it how it is ;) Nice work

  8. MacgyverDel Says:

OK , I’ve been trying to convince myself and have suggested that workouts are fun. In fact it takes me hours sometimes of anxiety thinking about the upcoming workout. For me it’s mainly the squats which I’ve never liked doing at all. But once it’s done I’m happier than a pig in s***. I’ll continue though to tell myself I’m having fun.hee hee

  9. Jim Przybytek Says:

I don’t work out for fun. I work out for results. At times, I must admit, it can be an obsession. The "burn" and "pump" are addictive. For about an hour everyday I get to escape from the wife and kids, work, bills, and whatever else takes up all your time or stresses you out. Just strap on the ipod and forget about the rest of the world for a while. It’s not just about fun, it’s also about mental health as well as physical health. If it wasn’t for the gym, I would be divorced and unemployed with bad credit. Working out improves my quality of life.

  10. brent99 Says:

This blog inspired me last night and I began to think along the lines of how bored I was and there were other things I wanted to be doing. Then I remembered what you wrote, and kept going! I like to focus on the idea of challenge and competition to reach my daily goals, rather than on "fun". If I’m there to try and run 3 miles at x speed, that’s what I focus on: accomplishing that short-term goal to show myself I can.

  11. farangtlsw Says:

We have our bouts of tiredness and bore out of cardio/workouts sometimes. But I damn sure when the energy comes back or the guilt from less workout, we will aim for the cardio again. Cardio is not boring at all, it sures build & strengthen our hearts

  12. brennenlesser Says:

Your description of trying on pants while being fat was more gross than boring, haha.

i work out at the Y, so, it’s always funny seeing crowds of ppl working out incorrectly. What’s really boring is sitting around waiting for the crowd of jock dudes*bros* to stop dicking around and stop trying to incline the heaviest db in the gym (they can’t). It’s funny seeing them with 2 friends at either side lift the weights for him, haha!

  13. Klebs Says:

Wow, you hit this right on the head!

  14. bodyauditor Says:

It is sad, isn\’t it? Why have we as a society lost interest in working hard? People nowadays, are afraid and revulsed by hard work (this goes for the workplace too I\’ve found). I too get aksed about building muscle: However, the queries are generally followed up by, \"what types of supplements or steroids are you taking?\" Sadly, it is difficult for people to simply just believe that by eating a sensible diet (not restrictive by any means) and consistently (this is key for sure) performing (or enduring, in some cases) some sort of fitness routine, such as moving iron, riding the bicycle, or recreational sports, (not to include couch sitting competitions or potato chip eating marathons) one can truly obtain any physical, mental or spiritual goals they can dream up and / or set for themselves.

  15. IBelieveInMe_gy Says:

Well said, what’s fun is what you get out of it. One of my friends accompanied me to the gmy once, sat on the stationary bike, reading a magazine and hardly breaking a sweat and I remember thinking, ‘why are you here?", and ‘why do you keep complaining that you can’t seem to loose the inches?’ when you can’t focus and apply yourself with one visit to the gym?.. its the disillushionment of why certain people go to the gym. its what you make it and for me the results week in week out are worth it! If it was easy, we all would not be here encouraging and pushing each other to greater heights

  16. rvngu Says:

yeah fun is relative. Workout out is fun when I`m giving my 110% and feel a great pump. Otherwise, it`s not fun.

  17. ch25ford Says:

Love your blogs and this is the best one yet. Keep writing them. This one is to the point. It is hard work and not fun at all, but if you desire a great body, you need to work at it. Well said.

  18. steroidsteve Says:

    hey….you look great……..

  19. bootcamp1987 Says:

I love everything you ever write. I hate working out but I agree that the results are worth it in the end. Keep up the good work.

  20. bodymaestro Says:

I have to disagree… at least for me studying the sport, planning the workouts and then actually doing the exercises at gym gives me great feeling (sometimes it is a grind but then everything else can be….sometimes). I would not say it is Fun but it is awesome to really feel and challenge your own body for few hours without any disturbances.

You have a great body so you must be doing things the right way but it never hurts to try to learn and to try new exercises.

  21. Joey Cage Says:

haha brilliant! VERY well said, I could’nt agree with you more…I do 60 minute cardio sessions 2 times a day on hardcore cut time, you could imagine how boring that gets lol…gotta do what cha gotta do.

  22. purpleklipse Says:

you are beautiful, intelligent and funny as hell! My favorite part "and a cellulite party all over your ass".

Love your writing and your personal web site. It’s such a treat when we get a new post from ya!

  23. rock23 Says:

Preach! You look like you practice what you preach too. ROCK

  24. BTSBSS Says:

I am 39 and just starting to work out again after 2-3 year fat gain party. Your attitude in your blogs and your results that I see in your pictures are going to help motivate me to reach my goals. Thanks and keep up the great work!!!

  25. farangtlsw Says:

will you post any new bodyblog ? :)

  26. Kimmy Says:

Wow! You look amazing! I am so impressed with your dedication. I will use it to inspire me to get back out in Grade A shape….I miss the dayz! and my friend!

    Roxy/Kimmy

  27. Melody Says:

    Well said!

  28. beshelman Says:

Everytime I start to fall off the wagon, I read your blog and look at your pics! Gets my ass movin’ every time! Guess I need to put the beer down now huh? LOL ;)

  29. Lemming Says:

The working out is enjoyable for me, it’s the dieting that kills me. No one eats properly in this crappy little town. Everything is rice and gravy, breaded pork chop, biscuits, and full sugar sodas. They ask me why I eat leaves.

  30. Lemming Says:

And about the dieting magic, I wonder how many people realize that to lose just one measly pound, you have to be in a calorie deficit of 3500 calories. And running for an hour burns 600 calories? Who can run for a friggin’ hour?! An hour of running to "pay" for one chocolate muffin??? I wonder how many people would actually do it if they had to pay up front for that damn muffin.

  31. Red_Cobra Says:

I actually enjoy working out and dieting. I don’t know why, but I just do. Love your dog by the way. What breed is it?I’ve got three chiuahuas that are about that size.

  32. hempick Says:

I don’t mind lifting. Most days I like going to the gym. Some days, not so much, but I force myself to.

Cardio can get RIDICULOUSLY boring, though. You are right. I have to focus on other things while I do it, otherwise I’d lose my mind.

Dieting. It can be tough, but for the most part I like healthy foods. I’ve loved nearly all vegetables since I was very small.

My weakness is potato chips, though.

  33. TheNormalMan Says:

Weight Training = The blood of my life. I could weight train all day everyday if it was physically possible for the body to do so. Nothing makes me feel as good as hoisting around weights and the feeling I get knowing that I’m pushing myself to the next level.

The 45 minute cardio session after the weights isn’t so much fun but it has to be done to look good. Following up with the diet is the hardest part, especially in our society where there’s bad food available to us at every corner. Great post!

  34. Corazon Says:

well ..i don t wanna bust all your bubbles..but when i first read it..i was sure people wouldn t of agreed..but wow..so surspised on the comments…
gyms not boring..you must like it some what deep down inside , to get results like use get..i undetand the cardio part..that sucks..but the wicked pumpes..and awesome feeling u get once u concured yyour goal..dosnt is just wanna make you go back for me…well for me it does…

    but whatever..

  35. Aaronz Says:

For me, if I am in shape I tend to get bored while working out, especially cardio. If I am not in shape at the time then my workouts are my motivation to keep going and improve myself. This is the only time I truly enjoy cardio. It is the repetitiveness and "lack of enjoyment" that causes me to lose interest every couple years and drop out of the life of fitness. With my current condition I might as well plan on enjoying cardio for at least a year.

  36. lukeap Says:

    amen.

  37. Michael (Nesta) Says:

lmao, i’ve always said the same, i hate working out but love the feeling afterwards knowing that you’ve done it, finished and slightly better off for it :-) maybe we’re the new breed teaching nieve exercisers that its not fun but necessary so just get stuck in and do it right… well you more than me lol i hate lecturing about as much as doing back and upper chest :-) and my work out form is shocking

  38. alpha-romeo Says:

Itz reallyhard to push ur self for a work out
but itz alwayz a gr8 fellin after wordz
specially when u see ur self reaching ur goal :_)

  39. headpickle Says:

As always you are on target :)

"cellulite party on my ass" You are the best…

  40. OnTheRoad Says:

Bloody fantastic blogs. Please keep telling it like it is!

  41. bigredjerseyboy Says:

Chicken Tuna : You should call yourself HOT TUNA!!!!!! You rock!!!!!! Being from Jersey I JUST L O V E YOUR KICK - ASS, TAKE NO PRISONERS ATTITUDE!!!! You should be a fitness instructor for the MARINES!!!

  42. jmorgan87 Says:

It’s true for most working out ends up being a huge chore. That tends to come from having no imagination. If people possessed the ability to envision their prototypical phyisical self, they would bust there ass hardcore week in week out striving for that vision. Most poor souls stumble through life without any great vision. It’s sad, and in my opinion sinful. On the otherhand if you have the presence of mind to formulate crisp ideas about how things should be, you modify your attitudes toward life to draw closer to those ideas.

  43. Kandicesbabyboy Says:

i tend to actually think workoing out i s fun…but i jus need to mix it up on a regular basis

  44. mom of 2 Says:

How true you are about it being "BORING". I look at working out as same has cleaning house…it has to be done…there is no"fun" in doing it …. but I do "LOVE" the results.

  45. TotallyCommited Says:

Wow!! I must say you tell it like it is, and I like that!! You are one of the first people that has been so real on here…..To be honest I was probably someone like in your "Lucky" blog….But after reading I have a totally different opinion….You work your ass off to look the way you look, you are truly an inspiration!!! I can only hope that someday I will begin to think in that way…I look forward to reading more blogs and looking at your progress!! Keep up the good work, I think that you are helping a lot of people including myself…THANK YOU for the wakeup call!

  46. SpanishLady2069 Says:

Awesome! Thanks for keeping it real!

  47. Melissa Says:

Your comments were raw! Its exactly what I needed to hear, I lost motivation 2 days ago. But I’m keen to keep going now thanks to you.

  48. saracattay Says:

I understand what you are saying about boredom but I really do love it!! I can’t stand to do cardio machines though so I switched to hiking, trail running, running bleachers and playing basketball. That has kept me motivated with my cardio! The diet part…Ok I do hate that!

  49. reller Says:

I understand what you are saying and i agree with it, but i know for me i love going it is a huge stress reliever for me plus it gets my mind off of every day things. For that 1 or more hours im in my own world, plus the feeling when your done if you work out hard and can feel the burn like your muscles are going to explode that is the best feeling i think. I do find times when its tuff to go but you just have to suck it up and go feel better after your done and glad that you went.

  50. Imhungry Says:

Yeah, you basically discribed the need for an achievable goal. Tell those co-workers to look at the small picture, not the big picture. Achieving small goals will make the big goal more realistic and motivational.

  51. Starshine Says:

WOW. THANKYOU. that is the most motivating piece of advice i have read in a long time. whenever i feel like not training or like eating crap i remember your words: ‘what’s boring is having your clothes not fit" etc. It’s helping me get back on track, I appreciate it!

  52. Malorie Gruver Says:

That shit was funny! And soooo true! I LOVE the results that I’m seeing in myself! And the fact that my size 4 jeans fit again is the funnest part of it! :) Keep up the hard work!

  53. FitnesschickDom Says:

This is very true!!!! If you want something different…you’ve got to DO something different! HellllllllooooOOOOo?!

  54. planettamar Says:

I agree with you for the most part, I guess I happen to be one of those crazy people that likes to work out. But, I am also one of those people that hates cardio, but I know that I must do it anyway! To me, weight training is fun and cardio sucks…..but you have to try to make it more interesting. :-) Fun…..no….but interesting…..gotta change it up, do different things and if you can, take it outside! But, I do agree with you, most people do not think it is fun and use it as an excuse not to do it at all.

  55. Thug_Mike Says:

Yep, i love weight lifting - cardio is boring its not exactly fun, i could think of a million things more fun then cardio, but when u get to the stage u want with ur body will be bit more fun to show off ur results and have a ton of stuff to talk about, id change up cardio tho, do running listening to my music on ipod, jump rope, bike riding, basketball, in a way its all like major burning things n that but well said chicky :) you tell em how it goes.

  56. scotland_boy Says:

I actually like lifting weights, for the most part. But I am trying desperately to loose fat, for which most everyone prescribes cardio (and a lot of it). There is nothing I hate more than running on a treadmill for thirty minutes or longer. The only way that I can keep it up is to take my run outdoors. The scenery along the streets is enough to distract me where I can get through the run without hitting the "STOP" button. And even if I decide to stop the run mid way, I still have to walk/run/whatever back to my house.

  57. lolernie Says:

I’ve read a lot of motivational articles and this one is definitely the least conventional and BY FAR the most honest. I imagine you knocked a lot of people out of a self-induced trance.. at least temporarily.

  58. bonniebeautiful Says:

love the blog keep em coming. Looking great as always!

  59. marquisekb8 Says:

LOL.. WORKOUT IS BORING, LOL. BUT I GUES THE RESULT ARE EXCITING ENOUGH!! I JUST GET BORING RUNNING, GOSH, I GET SOOO BORED, NOT EVEN TIRED.. I GET TORED FROM BEING BORED…

  60. ccs77 Says:

LOL…"cellulite party all over your ass", " I know what fun is, working out is no F$%$ing fun!" That stuff is almost signature worthy! LOL

    Good blog Chicken Tuna….

  61. philfstr Says:

I think it would be boring just sitting around and doing nothing all the time because one it too fat to move - or even worst… stuck in bed with a health condition… you’re right - i woudl rather do a boring work out than be in horrible health or DEAD.

  62. MidLifeMan Says:

Well said. You just have to suck it up and do what ya gotta do

  63. warriorelite Says:

Beautifully blunt and straight to the point. Good stuff. I for one, actually likes to workout, but I do agree with pretty much everything you are saying. For the most part, people are very settled in what they do and they are comfortable and lazy. Anything outside of the buttons on the remote or the junkfood and drinks are boring to most people. The world is getting lazier and lazier every year. Pretty soon, most of this whole planet is going to have a heart attack and we will be the last ones left.

  64. knackbobbes Says:

You are so right. The same people saying they do not work out because it is boring are going to their jobs everyday, sitting in a buro at the computer day in day out, cryin about the boring job. But they go there, because they need the result (money) so go to the boring gym because you need the result (health, fitness, stress relief). And to me, it is not boring everytime - even cardio can be funny, running with friends watching movies on your ipod! It is like in sports, when the trainer wants to kick your a*** hardly, just smile in his face and give him something to think about!!!

  65. curt_james Says:

You wrote, "If you actually DO workout consistently and eat right all the time, you’ll keep getting in better shape and that can actually be fun and exciting in it’s own way."

Agreed on that and so consistency is my new Most Important Word. :) CT, you have a great body, obviously. Your obliques (who’s a bodybuilding nerd?) are out of this world, your abs, yes. Your cute, just a beautiful woman. But the best thing about you is your positive attitude. Well, actually that places a close second to your knowledge and the way you present your information.

Yeah, a gushing fanboy letter, but an accurate one, imo. I did 30 minutes of cardio yesterday with your example as the motivation. You said you did 5 days of 30 minutes. And also I avoided the "Disney Land" lat ride (although my back and biceps are protesting that choice now) because of your comments in your workout section.

All that to say this: I’m glad you’re a BodySpacer.

(Uh, I won’t be banned for writing a book, will I?)

  66. Animal76 Says:

While I admire your dedication to staying fit, I completely disagree with you about working out not being fun. It is not easy, but it can and should be fun. For many it’s not fun, because they’re out of shape and feel terribly uncomfortable when exercising. Things are fun when you’re good at them. The fun is in challenging yourself and trying to top your own personal bests. If you just go to the gym and go through the motions without specific goals it’s going to be monotonous and boring. If you aim to improve on some aspect of your workout each time you walk into the gym, then you have something to focus on. Humans thrive on challenge. That is why we push the limits in every endeavor we approach. Those who settle for mediocrity will find every element of life to be boring.

  67. chickentuna Says:

I don’t think it’s fun. It’s hard work. It is fun to enjoy being fit after the hard work is completed.

However, this original post was not about whether or not working out is ‘fun’. The point was that if anyone says ‘working out is boring’,… that is simply not a valid excuse to avoid working out… so if you think it actually is fun, then yippee for you!

  68. PatricU Says:

Amen on what it takes to achieve a fitness goal. For those who reallly want it Sacrifice of some sort will be necessary. Getting lean and muscular is a lonely hobby unless you have a few workout partners for one or two of your workouts to make it bearable but it’s gonna be a lot of time alone pushing yourself to the limit to achieve your goals. You look awesome and keep up the hard work.

  69. soussou Says:

You’re right! it’s not fun. and a healthy diet will take the person to results. eating crap and exercising will just maintain the low-quality weight.
i am soo going to gym right now!
thanks for the pushy word girl!

  70. Jimus Maximus Says:

A great post CT! Completely agree with you.

    Have to say,
"and a cellulite party all over your ass" is the funniest thing I’ve heard in a long time!

    good times!

  71. walcomm Says:

Some days training is worse than work. Other days it’s a great stress releaser. I train to compete a higher level (and look better) than everyone else. A friend of mine would label non-cardio enthusiasts as "Road Kill".

  72. C-Tank Says:

Once again great write up. I like how you put things into perspective for alot of excuse givers out there! Tell it how it is girl…. keep doing your thing! …. "with fat rolls and jiggles everywhere" (LMAO).. you have got to stop this.. I do not suggest trying to drink a cup of water while reading your write ups! Awesome 10+ -Tank

  73. BonBon Says:

How often do you do cardio and for how long. Iam 37 and I want to get in better shape but not go overboard. Also do you take any supplement protein.

  74. Toonafishman Says:

The cellulite party was the best part.

  75. fuelish1 Says:

That’s why you either gotta watch tv while you do it, or play some GOOD songs on yer ipod while doing it, to keep it from being too boring. :D

  76. jbdornick Says:

that was an awesome article and to the point i think you become even more spectacular as i read what you have to say, you make laugh and that is good you are honest yet brutal sometimes and thats awesome keep being you bc when you stop doing that and try to be what everybody else want you lose yourself and you are doing a great job on being focused and true to you.

  77. cfit82 Says:

I agree completely. I hate reading womens magazines and they have some stupid workout that’s "fun", but misses the point, Results!!! Those stupid a** balls and, bands and 3lb dumbells arn’t going to get you anywhere.
Can I steal the cellulite party term? that is just so cool! I promise to give you credit, but I swear I am going to be saying that to all kinds of people.

  80. flbabyk Says:

Good call. I’ve begun to realize that much of my body’s yo yo effect had a lot to do with the fact that I thought my workouts should be fun… and I’d get in great shape, to a point, but then when I got bored or distracted: off the wagon. I’m realizing now for my first competition, there is no wagon. It’s just life. Yeah, sometimes it kinda sucks, sometimes it’s fun. But when eating right and working out just becomes a part of you, it’s not exciting anymore. Thanks for always being honest. We progress the most when we are able to be honest with ourselves.
