Odd thing at the gym . . . 1/24
Question?? Why would one bring his or her phone into the gym and proceed to talk for at least :45 minutes of the hour they are there? Can’t they do that at another time - - in your home, car, at the mall, etc.? I think it’s awesome to pay for a gym membership and then just show up and sit on the phone? What’s that about? I’ve seen people get on machines and then call or answer a call and talk while sitting on the machine. Don’t they know they are taking up space? I think it’s rude, ill mannered and selfish. . . and I guess talking on the phone while at the gym is physically draining because there is always that ubiquitous water bottle from which they are continuously drinking . . .

There’s allot of people who go to fitness centers just to flaunt material possessions or socialize in general, and, unfortunately, at the rush hour times when more dedicated people would like to workout. Poor gym etiquette is part of the reason I set up a gym in my basement.

Poor gym etiquette??? GRRRRR . . . those observations will be part of my "Odd thing at the gym posts . . . I guess they really don’t have anything else to do and the gym is a hang out place like the mall or the arcade.

There is an older guy at my gym who talks to every guy with a really loud voice about real estate or construction and he’s always on his cell phone too. It’s like the gym is his own personal office. He talks longer than his workout takes.

I can’t understand that sort of thing either. You cannot be concentrating on your workout with a phone glued to your head.

I also see that at the gym I go to. So annoying. I try my best to ignore it but sometimes is hard to. What about the ppl that have a book and sit at a machine and they do 1 set and while they are resting they actually read the book!!! yeah, I couldn’t belive my eyes when I saw that. The man was sitting at the peck machine and he was "reading"

In response to aragonmod’s post about the man reading… at a gym I used to belong to, a young man used to come in once a week, and in between sets he’d pull out a newspaper!! Like cell phones, if you can’t make it through an workout without picking up the phone or a newspaper then maybe some re-evaluation is recommended.

Some people actually camp out on the bikes with a book or magazine and I can swear they read the whole thing. I should have put this in the post but we have a large room where the classes are held and people will go in there, get a mat and lay on it and talk on the phone just like at home. Amazing . . . I just came from the rink and there are people all over the place ON THE DAD-GUM PHONE! They are on the floor skating one inch per minute ON THE PHONE. They are on the sidelines with their legs crossed ON THE PHONE. They are at the snack table eating nachos ON THE PHONE. Maybe I don’t have a life but I have never had that much business on the phone. I leave my phone in the car when I go to the gym or skating. We almost ran over a lady tonight — ON THE PHONE! Sorry, just venting…

Not to sidetrack your post, but in my gym people act like they’re at home. They don’t respect the machines or that other people are there at all. Lately I’ve seen someone on the treadmill in his socks. He had on Timbs and took them off and then was like doing 45 minutes in his socks and jeans! What? Didn’t you know you were coming to the gym? Were you so overwhelmed with the need to do cardio that you couldn’t wait and came directly from work? No time to get sweats and sneaks? But at least he took his boots off. That same day I saw 2 other people on the treadmills with their snow boots on! Duh! That’s why the equipment gets torn up. People just don’t give a s**t. Makes me so mad because I consider the owner a friend (as does everyone else in the gym) and that behavior costs him $$. It’s BS.

I discourage conversation by moving quickly from one exercise to the next unless I see a need to talk but it’s very rare. I have stopped to help people with equipment but it’s helping and then I move on. I usually get in and get out. Some people sit on the steps and chat. Some sit on the equipment and chat. Maybe this is their only time to socialze? Beats me.
