Some Folks Just Don’t Get It

Yesterday I was talking with a co-worker, and I slipped up by telling him I keep a daily record of the calories I eat. To me it is VERY obvious this guy does not work out, so I was not offended by his negative commets about my lifestyle. Besides, he’s one of my fraternal brothers, so I took his comments as jest. However, an eavesdropper jumped in and started going on about how weird I am for doing this. She then went on to tell me about her degree in Psychology, and her diagnosis for me. To add to it she started probing me about my hobbies. For some reason this reallygot under my skin. So I snapped back, "what’s it to ya?"

I’m not sure why I allowed this to get to me. Now I see that some folks just don’t get it. Neither of the two people making comments yesterday are in the "fitness culture" so there ignorance should not surprise. Maybe I was offended because I have made diet and exercise a part of who I am.

Well, I’m over it now, but I have learned a lesson here.

What was her diagnosis of you?

I would think that if someone were in shape then whatever they’re doing must be the right thing to do. But, that’s just me. Too bad your coworker doesn’t have any common sense being that she has a psychology degree and all.

There’s nothing wrong with tracking what you eat. It’s a sensible way to stay on top of your overall health. Now, if you hate yourself because you ate 10 calories more than you should have, then that is a different story, but that definitely does not sound like you… This from someone who is studying to be a therapist… :-)

No, maybe they were offended b/c you’ve made diet and exercise a part of your life, and they HAVEN’T. Keep moving forward~~~

Oh man, that sounds all too familiar. I am about to blog about the joys of my mother trying to give me hot chocolate for breakfast and her getting mad when I say no haha..Well, you look really good, so the calorie counting pays off, what do they know lol

I get it from my mom (60 years old) all the time. She lost 50 pounds which is great but at her age she did not care about lean muscle. She just wanted to fit into smaller clothes. I on the other hand am 33 years old and want to get fit, stay that way, eventually teach my kids this fitness culture and love themselves for being healthy. People need to understand it is a culture and a mental state and it is not for everyone and should respect us for that. I am so with you on your feelings on this topic.

Damn, that sounds annoying! This is something bber’s have to deal with, im glad you never accepted the comments from the local phsycology guru at your work.
Kind of like when we see a fat person with crisps and coke who walk with a tough swagger. Its just plain wrong…..

Dude…I wouldn’t worry about it. Just like they may have a lifestyle of being sedentary and watching the world go round through their television tube…you have lifestyle of being committed to taking care of yourself. In a few years, spark up the conversation again and see who is doing better health wise. Ohhh did anyone during this psychoanalyzing hate session notice that we are in a recession and health care is still expensive? I was just wondering…happy lifting dude!

unlicensed psych majors are the worst….i, myself, am one of them, but i only diagnose people if they ask…to their faces, that is

You got hatas everywhere. You probably get positive buzz around the workplace and those two are just jealous of you. All they have to do is get off their lazy asses and do something and they wouldn’t have to resort to that. Just keep pumping away and while she has her psych degree you have a clean degree of good health.
