Music for the best workouts

December 3, 2007

For me, the music I listen to is a huge part of a succesful workout. If the song is right, at the right time, it can give me the boost I need to grit my teeth and keep going for just a few minutes more either on the treadmill or during a lifting set. For me, it isn’t the actual music that helps me, but the image it puts in my head. For this reason, I listen to a lot of music that I can attribute to something hardcore. I like a lot of movie scores, because they make me think of a point in that movie that was particularly awesome. For example, any arnold theme is obviously good, ie. Total Recall, True Lies, Commando etc. For some reason or another when I see a good youtube bodybuilding video and it has music, when I hear the song it reminds me of the video. There are a few Twista, Jadakiss and Chamillionaire tracks that remind me of Ronnie Coleman vids. Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin remind me of Jay Cutler vids. If you are looking for some great gym music, try this. Watch a video first, one you really like and that motivates you. Download the soundtrack from it and listen to it in the gym. You will feel like Ronnie Coleman doing an 800Lbs deadlift.

Creatine off Phase

October 30, 2007

I have been taking various forms of creatine for the past 4 months, either pre-workout with arginine (NO Shotgun) or a post workout glutamine and found myself coming into a plateau and loss of effectiveness. Yesterday I started an off phase, where I am only going to have protein powder for the next two weeks, to free my body and cleanse. During my workout yesterday morning, I started off doing bench, and I usually do a warmup on 135 and then move up to 225 for my second set. For this workout I decided to scale it back, just incase I really was less strong and energized. I warmed up on 135 like usual, but then did a set of 205. That set was easy, so I moved to 225, which was also even EASIER than usual. So I moved to 245 which I rarely press, and I was able to push out 4 reps, so I was happy with that. At least now I know that there is no HUGE crash coming off supps for a while. My other concern is losing muscle mass, but I don’t really think its going to happen in a two week period because I am going to hit the gym even harder to make sure and its not like I was on roids. If anyone can give me a little supp advice I would appreciate it. What are opinions on test. boosters as opposed to creatine for mass? Side effects?

The perfect meal

October 20, 2007

I have been trying to eat as much of every food group for the past few weeks as I can, just to keep a balanced nutritional routine. I’ve come up with a meal that satisfies protein, veggies, whole grain carbs, nutritional fats and thermogenics. Its simple. Fajitas. Cook up 2 chicken breasts, season them with spices. Cook up some peppers, onions and cook them in a little bit of olive oil. In 2 whole grain tortillas, put lettuce, avocado, salsa, tomatoes, and some cheese. Add the cooked stuff. Voila. Awesome flavour, good for you, and tons of nutritional value. Great for post workout. Helps to restore carbs, high in protein for muscle synthesis and great vitamins to keep the body healthy and protect aginst sickness. I usually have a cup of coffee with it because I like the pick me up after a hardcore workout, good fat burner too. (Black of course)

Animal Intensity

October 20, 2007

The gym today was like a thunder storm. From the moment I walked in the door, I was ready for battle. After a sip of water I went straight to the weights. A warm up with the bar for biceps, 15 reps, not enough weight. So I slapped on 25 pounds on each side, by my calculations, that was 95 pounds I was curling. 10 reps, hard, but still not enough. So I slapped on two more 10’s, to bring it up to 115. Now for me, thats some heavy weight. I’ve never seen that kind of vascularity in my arms, but it felt good. What a pump, flexing my biceps was almost painful, but awesome. Then I went to triceps, and more heavy weight was like nothing, getting up to pushing down 160 pounds 12 times.

It was at this point that I was in the zone, there was noone else there but me, and it was amazing. It was one of those times when you just want to take off your shirt and workout just to see your muscles work. I’m pretty sure people thought I was on some kind of drug, which of course I wasn’t. Either way, the stars were all lined up right today and it was one of the best workouts I’ve ever had. Tomorrow is leg day, so I can only hope that I can walk into the gym with the same Animal Intensity that I had today.

Come to think of it, I was watching a youtube video of Dennis Wolf training before my workout, so that had to add some adrenaline to my system. That man is huge, and in my opinion should have beat cutler at the olympia. Were it not for the politics, he would have placed higher. Delts like bowling balls, that guy is insane.

Discipline

October 12, 2007

So its been about a year now since I started exercising on a regular basis. As I sip on a creatine drink, I realize that my interest to get into shape has become something more, much more. Bodybuilding and fitness is something that I cherish and I can’t imagine my life without. The effects it has had on my body in one year are astounding. I remember going to the gym a year ago and picking up the weight for the first time. I was dumbell pressing 50’s on my heaviest set. Today I am doing 100’s, double what I began with. I’m the first to admit to, that I don’t go to the gym to try to get stronger, I just want to look killer. 100% all natural body moulding. I love the supportive industries of bodybuilding like supplementation, exercise routines, knowledge and motivation. I even like looking for new music to workout to. I went from drinking a 12 pack of beer a night to drinking a protein shake with a chicken breast, and I would never go back to that lifestyle. I’ve seen too many people eat and drink their way into cardiac arrest and cancer.

The future holds unlimited potential for growth. I don’t even want to compete, I just want to be happy with the way I look. And I’ve found that just being fit and strong makes me a more confident person in everyday life. The clothes I wear, the way I act have changed all because I started working out. More progress reports to come.

Following the trail to the Olympia

August 7, 2007

So we are now only about 2 months out from the 2007 Olympia, so the competitors are well into their final training and diet regimes. From seeing them on the Olympia video series, and other forms of media, I am finding it a great way to stay the course. I always find it a great source of motivation whenever a professional shares his training and nutrition with the public. The one thing I wish was more truthful is the use of steroids. I realize that there may be rules against it’s use, but really, it is impossible to be 300 pounds of muscle using N.O Explode or Cell-Tech. Come on guys. Cutler and Coleman especially, who are role models for the entire bodybuilding community. Why can’t they just admit that they do roids? Everyone knows it is a part of the business. Arnold admitted it. Either way, I have an enourmous amount of respect for each of them. As a prediction, I pick Cutler all the way. Ronnie was a great bodybuilder, but he is getting older and less able to maintain his enormous size. Jay has a more molded physique and I like his smaller waist size better. As long as his back is up to par, I think he may take this one.
