Is Will Smith On Steroids?

This was a question posed by a female viewer last night while my wife and I sat watching "I Am Legend" for the first time.

The question was posed during the scene in which Will Smith is performing some pullups on a bar with no shirt on. The reason I thought that this was so funny is that just because a person has a well defined physique, our culture these days must assume that the person is also using steroids. I blame the media misinformation and the government crackdown with this perception.

I was reading an article in MD by John Romano, in which one of the key players in bringing the negative light on steroids was Lyle Alzado. In the article, John Romano is talking about a book that many of you may have heard about, Steroid Nation, written by Shaun Assael. Lyle Alzado’s false accusation that steroids caused his untimely death is likely something that contributed the government to get into a hissy fit about steroids and cause all the misinformation that is so prevalent about them these days.

I suggest you read the article in this month’s Muscular Development, and maybe even buy the book, about which John Romano gave a positive review. You can also see the video on my bodyspace about the "other side" of the steroid debate, which is the one less heard.

I highly doubt it. Consider the proposition of preparing for something…anything…several months out. You will be provided with a trainer, dietician, physician, state-of-the-art facility and equipment. All your meals will be carefully prepared and waiting. This preparation will be your full-time job. At the end of (and probably during) the training period, you’ll receive tons of cash and much acclaim. I think I might be able to pack a few clean pounds on!

Nice blog on steroids. I have been around bodybuilding most of my adult life, and at 47 that has been quite a wile. I don’t know how many times I have been ask do you take steroids. My response is a simple no, but what I would like to say is if I were I would be a hell of a lot bigger than I am.
As usual people lump everybody together. All bodybuilders or any body that lifts weights for that matter must be on something. I have always felt that a naturally developed physique brought about by hard training, smart eating and rest is the best way to go.
I am sure if I were to be competing against those who are using steroids it would be hard to resist taking them as well. But as with anything that isn’t natural there is always I price to pay. For me it just wouldn’t be worth the trade off.
The real reason most folks train over a long period of time is the way it makes them feel. They may start off to change there body’s shape and there is nothing wrong with that at all. But what keeps them at it year in and year out is what is does for there overall health. The old saying its the journey not the destination holds true in weight training just like anything else worthwhile in life.
