So it’s been pretty much forever since I’ve updated this but that happens, you know, life gets in the way sometimes. Anyways, the latest up date is that my girlfriend (known as ~DD~ on this site) placed second at provincials here in Nova Scotia, although we’re really happy for her accomplishment we really wanted that 1st place finish. She has qualified for Nationals again (she place 10th at Nationals last year, and 5th at World Qualifiers) but I don’t think that we’ll be able to get her there, it’s just to expensive for us right now, so it might just have to be put off until next year. Maybe she’ll have a provincial overall win going into Nationals next year…who know what the future will bring.
She’s second from the left in this pic (the dark one), the winner is the platinum blonde furtherest to the left.

So lately most of my posts have been involving supplements in some way, shape or form. Seeing as I am a NESTA Certified Personal Trainer, I thought that maybe it’s time I also posted some on training. Today I would like to start with an exercise that I rarely see done at the gym anymore (at least the one I go to) but it’s an exercise that, if done right, can pack some serious size on you shoulders. What is it you ask???? Plain and simple, it’s Wide Grip Upright Rows, sometimes also called "High Pulls". How do you do it? Grab a barbell (no weight to start - form first!) Place your hands in a regular grap (thumbs wrapped around the bar) just barely outside shoulder width. Now without jerking the weight up or swinging it up with your back, pull the bar up to the midline of you pectorals. Your elbows should not be pointing behind you, or towards the floor, instead they should be pointing to the roof. Hold the bar in this position for a pause (roughly one second) then control the bar on the descent, not letting it just drop as this can be rough on your rear delts and your rotator cuffs. Continue this motion for at least 8-12 reps. This exercise wil work your lateral and posterior delt heads and is a great compliment to a shoulder press. Now, another version (mostly used by powerlifters) is the high pull. This is done exactly the same, but using a slightly wider grip and heavier weight. The high pull could be considered the first half of a power clean. The idea, is to make the movement more explosive. After thoroughly warming up you shoulders, assume the same position, wider grip, now using as little swing as possible, explode the bar up, lifting it to your upper chest and then descend the bar back down, once again you must be under control at all times or you’re risking an injury. Repeat this for 4-8 reps. The idea for the high pull is that at the top of the lift you would be able to roll your wrists, get under the bar properly, and get a successful power clean (althought I would not advise doing this unless you have been directly trained by a qualified professional, I’ve seen way too many major injuries as a result of incorrect form). Although this exercise will pop up in a magazine every once and awhile, it just never seems to stick with people, although people will shoulder press and lateral raise until they can’t lift their arms, that is only 2/3 of the shoulder equation. The upright raise/high pull will fill in that last 1/3 by working those rear and side delts. Give it a try during your next workout….
Suggested workout: 10 min warmup/stretch (bike, then rotator cuffs, neck, arms, and back)
Standing DB shoulder press: 4 sets @ 8-12 reps
Upright Row/High Pull: 4 sets @ 4-12 reps
Lateral DB raise: 3 sets @ 10-15 reps
Bent over DB single arm raise(for rear delts): 3 sets 12-15 reps - if you’re wondering about this one, Milos Sarcev has a good example in one of his bodybuidling.com videos.

Damn it’s been almost a month, anyways today’s thought is on the constant debate about Naturals vs Unnaturals(drug assisted). I’ve argued this issue many times (although I try not to choose sides), I just think that nothing will ever be resolved concerning it. It’s impossible to say who’s right, who’s better, etc, etc. It is true that all pros in the IFBB take something that would be considered "unnatural" whether that’s steriods, GH, clen or even ephedra. Don’t kid yourself, now that we’ve got that out of the way, it’s also true that many natural competitors also take substances considered "unnatural" including GH, IGF-1, ephedrine, etc, etc. This is well known amongst those in our industry. So who’s right? NO ONE!! If you are truely a fan of the sport then you should understand what it takes to get to the top (the real "what it takes") not what supplement companies want you to think. I have competed against steroid users before (even though I am completly drug-free) and placed decent. It can be done. Should it be done, yes, it is great to see a natural guy going up against a drug-assisted athlete in an open show!! Where it becomes less great is when a all-natural athlete competes in an all-natural show but poses against an unnatural competitor. These are events specifically for a type of competitor, to me the latter situation is the same as a male bodybuilder competiting in the women’s division while wearing a wig, totally out of place. I understand why people do this, they want to win something, anything, but what recognition does it bring, none because it is usually very obvious who is using at a natural show. They may pass the tests but everyone knows. Now don’t get me wrong I’m the first one to call a spade a spade (when a competitor blames his own weaknesses on the other’s using drugs), I just think it is wrong to enter events when you are clearly outside of the rules, I don’t care if you use (more power to you) but stay competing against other users (or are you too scared?). I will never claim that drug users don’t have to work hard or diet hard, sometimes they have to do more than the naturals, I’m just too honest and believe in staying within the rules. So my opinion on this issue, natural vs unnatural, I DON’T CARE, just stay within the rules of your organization and your event, if you don’t and you beat me you better be ready next time because you just gave me more fire and I’ll be focusing on you!!!!

I’ve been slacking lately on the bodyblog, mostly because I’ve been pretty much posting daily in my ZEUS log. So instead of letting this go completely I think I’m jugt going to post my thoughts (if I have any) about various topics concerning health, fitness and bodybuilding. I might even cut and paste some of my current workouts on here as well. This week should be my first week actually logging Zeus since the package was dropped off Friday, or at least the delivery people attempted to drop it off but seeing as I was at work I was not here to receive it, and they took it with them, hopefully I will be able to get it Monday.
With that said my ‘thought’ right now is about all the people on the forums try to disprove and discredit everyone else. Naturally you don’t to use a supplement that is complete bunk, but how do you know until you try it? (considering that it is not going to hurt your health at all) The power of placebos is huge, does that mean you can do the same without said product? I don’t believe so. The mind is very powerful and if I take a tribulus capsule, and my body responds by providing me with extra strength, is that product not working? Maybe not at the cellular chemistry level but if I believe it’s working and my mind makes it work, is it not a success? The way I see it is that if you believe a product will work, truely believe it, then it is probably going to do something for you and vice versa. So even though many on bb.com believe tribulus, certain forms of creatine, ecdysterone, etc do not work in any fashion I am going to continue using what I see fit and getting results off it (either from the product itself or my mind believing in it).

Besides preparing for contests I’m also looking into doing a bachelor’s degree in computer science at Dalhousie University, hopefully my employer will pay for it, at the same time I will probably try to Project Management Certification. Yep things are busy right now.

Man that bodyblog admin is all over you if you haven’t updated in awhile. Anyways it’s my own fault for keep up with this. Prep has been going awesome I did my weigh in this morning and I am way down again. You can’t really tell the difference by looking at me but it is obvious to me just in the way I feel. Basically nothing much has changed everything is staying pretty constent right now, I’m looking at adding a tribulus product to help maintain strength as I cut, I know many people don’t believe in that product but for me it’s mental, if I think it works my body will make it work (or at least adapt so that it seems like the product is doing something.) Anyways, new weight and BF% are up, measurements will be done tomorrow.
