If you’re a fan of the sweet science of Boxing, you’ll be sad to hear England’s lightweight dynamo Frankie Gavin has pulled out for..well, not being so lightweight anymore and over the weight limit.
The lightweight world amateur champion, who hails from Birmingham, has been consistently over the 60kg limit by roughly 1.36kg and to risk further weight loss would have only compromised his health. For fans of the sport and England’s hopes for gold in the ring, its a tough moment. He’s a punishing southpaw who had beaten every rival in his Olympic class and was the heavy odds-on bet to dominate.
Unfortunately he is a victim of his own hard work because his weight "problem" isn’t from neglect, it is via a more focused training regime that has caused him to pack on some muscle and grow out of the weight class. However it was also an impossibility to move him to light-welterweight as team-mate Bradley Saunders had already qualified in that class.
A tough loss for young Mr. Gavin, England and fans of the sweet science.
